Road to confusion

In Bombay, it is common to find even the upmarket “Western Ghats” pronouncing Hughes Road as “hyoo-jus” road.

Our own Irwin Road is posing similar problems.

For those conversant with the Queen’s tongue, the pronunciation may seem obvious. It should be Irwin as in “Ahr-win”.

But, clearly, the Mysore City Corporation doesn’t agree.

A bus bay, the ADB-approved name for a bus stop, has come up near the suburban bus station. And plastered on it is the big broad logo in Kannada.

Irwin Road, it reads, as in “Ihr-win”, as it is currently pronounced by the residents of Malgudi.
