K.B. Ganapathy has a nice anecdote in today's Star of Mysore on Dr Raj Kumar. Apparently in the very year Dr Raj won a national award for best actor, Ambarish too won the award for best villain.
"Ambarish had gone to receive the award with his mother. Soon, Dr Raj entered the hall. Ambarish's mother asked him to go and meet Dr Raj, congratulate him and take his blessings.
"Ambarish, however, did not listen to his mother. In a few minutes, though, Dr Raj, on spotting Ambarish, walked upto him and profusely congratulated him, thus embarrassing mother and son."
KP,
I am curious where Mr. Ganapathy heard this story. As far as I know, Rajkumar NEVER won a national award for acting. The only national award he won was for the “Best Playback Singer” for “Jeevana Chaitra”. And, of course he won the Dadasaheb Phalke…..
Do you have the link to KBG’s writing ? I hate to dig through the “Hocus Pocus” and “Abracadabra”‘s :)

December stud,
You are absolutely right. Both Dr. Raj and Ambarish never won National award for acting. The subject award was the state award for which Ambarish came from Mysore to Bangalore to receive accompanied by his mother. Those were the days when Ambarish was a relatively newcomer. Continuing the story, it seems Ambarish’s mother was so upset that he did not greet Dr. Raj before he did, she was scolding Ambarish all the way in the car while travelling back to Mysore.

SRM,
Thanks for the clarification. On a lighter note, Ambarish won an “award for acting”…really ? ;)

Dear DS
Yes Ambarish has won a state award!!. He was a good actor when he was villain, supporting actor, till he became hero!! He was excellent in Puttanna’s movies “Nagara haavu”, “Shubhamangala”, “Ranganayaki” & “Masanada Hoovu”.

SRM,
As they say…”….avaravara bhAvakke”.
Sure, he was good a Jaleela in “Nagarahaavu”, but I do rather not watch any of his other movies. But then, that’s just me.

Dear DS.
Puttanna at least tried to tap his acting talent
(what ever talent he has!!) by giving good supporting characters, but most of Ambarish’s movies as “Hero” were horrible to watch!

I would any day prefer to watch Vishnuvardhan’s, Anantnag’s, Shankarnag’s, Ramesh’s etc….
I have watched quite a few Rebel Star movies and found it excruciatingly painful !!!
And, as for Banashankar’s comment, i don’t think Rajkumar not winning a national award has anything to do with language. Shanar Nag won it on his very first movie “oMdAnoMdu kAladalli”. It’s just that Rajkumar didn’t win. No point in coming up with conspiracy theories. As a matter of fact, Sivaji Ganesan has never won a national award either. He was finally awarded the “Best supporting Actor” award for “Thevar Magan” and he promptly declined it. It was then given to Sunny Deol for “Damini”. Just like Rajkumar, Sivaji won the Dadasaheb too….

As far as I can recall Shankar Nag did win the best actor award for “oMdAnoMdu kAladalli”. I am almost certain. It’s just that I was too young or not born when the movie came out, so I couldn’t read any news paper stories then ;)
But, I just googled and yes he has won that award.

With reference to December Stud on Dr. Raj not winning a national award for acting:

just because some Sevazi Ganezan didn’t win an award doesn’t mean Dr. Raj doesn’t deserve it :-)
oh and btw, it is infact sad that this Sevazi dude was a dadasaheb phalke awardee – while our Ambareesh isn’t.. its high time Ambi got honored by a phalke..

as most of the actors themselves say… awards mean little for them…
its the box office which decides who stays in business of acting ….
