How come none of the Indian newspapers or magazines have yet run features marking the 100th anniversary of R.K. Narayan? Don’t they remember? Or don’t they care?
And why has New York-based India Abroad newspaper done what our publications should have been first at?
The issue is not just Newspapers. The whole system is broken.
To answer the “India Abroad” story, honestly, I guess it’s just our genes. We truly don’t get it. Don’t read it as “we are stupid”, but read it as “we are naive”.
We had to wait for a Nobel Prize for Mother Teresa before conferring the Bharat Ratna. We had to wait for an Oscar for Satyajith Ray before conferring the Bharat Ratna…..and the list goes on.
And, I truly believe that as a society, we are unable to recognize and appreciate real talent. Someone else needs to point that out for us. The only exceptions are movie actors and cricketers. We are very good at identifying their “talents”. See, I knew Aishwarya Rai was going to be big when I saw her in a Pepsi ad with Aamir Khan long long ago. Yep, I was right !!!
