Can anybody who knows these things tells us why, just why, the quarterly results of only the IT companies are shown with such fanfare by the business TV channels?
We don’t see the TISCO boardroom live, we don’t see the Bajaj boardroom live, we don’t see the Reliance boardroom live. Why only Infosys and Wipro and Satyam…?
Pardon us for this silly thought, but do they pay the channels for the telecast? And therefore is it actually advertising?

Most of what we get to see on Television shows us just the first few colors of the Spectrum. The other colors sometimes are hidden deliberately and at times the media just doesn’t bother to show them.
Aren’t we always — perennially, rather — shortsighted? When the Ambanis were riding high in the late 1970’s and 1980’s making and breaking governments across India, the newspapers of those days went ga-ga over them. Much earlier, it was the Tatas who got the full attention in the Fourth Estate. Now, it’s the neo-forces of IT, who are adept at manipulating and coopting the media in a complete sweep. It’s just that we fail to see a reason and get carried by the full-blast coverage of a CNBC or an NDTV. Let’s remember the on-the-bus journalism practised by the Nixon-era politicians — when they were literally bought over and driven to barnstorming poll campaign sites just to get their side of coverage a no-holds-barred publicity. This again reappeared in the form of “embedded” journalism during the US invasion of Iraq, circa 2003. During such times — and as always, when the subject is too gargantuan and overwhelming to be contained — journalists jettison the faculty of questioning and allow themselves to be ferried along in the currents. What KP’s query intrinsically highlights is the vulnerability — or is it willingness? — of the media to play footsie with any new dramatis persona. Another boom of an IT sort, and the media will junk Infys and Wipros, and move on with the new crowd. It’s also as much about saleability of their product — eyeball count or the subscription mayhem.
