From Washington D.C., Alfred Satish Jones writes of the happiest day of his life: being selected for the CFTRI school cricket team.
“After I’d put on the abdomen guard, the only way I could walk was with my legs spread wide, like a Dasara Kesari pailvaan approaching his next victim at the beginning of his kusthi match,” writes Jones.

Hey Alfred,
The next time you’re in our part of the world, allow me the honour of presenting you with an ‘abdomen guard’ made of gold! Madikko!
Man, you make for one swell reading!! Love it!
Life is one long anecdote, eh!!!
Hi Satish Jones,
Your cricket adventure makes one hell of a reading. Anybody could go back to their school days in Mysore and think of cricket and writing about it. But your narration is real swell. Now that you say that wearing an abdomen guard and walking with it was like feeling like a Dasara Kesari pailwan, the picture has not changed much if you look at top cricketers adjusting their guards on television today coming out to bat.
As far as my own experience goes, I always had the honour of playing for the middle school team and I was pretty good. But the only reason I got to play was there were no seniors as there was no admission for boys in high school. The PT master was called Koli, (I forget his real name), a thin, wiry, tall man. He would have whistle in his hand all the time and he would whip most of the boys with it. But he was always soft on girls.
Incidentally the school I studied in was Christ The King Convent or CKC for short.
Superbly narrated!
I was from CFTRI school too and I could just imagine the whole scene.. especially UR saying all those things!! Great writing.. Pls do post more writings about your school life.. It’ll be great to read!!
