HRD Minister Arjun Singh's proposal for 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in higher educational institutions has sent tempers and temperatures soaring. But Singh is remorseless, not sparing anybody who opposes his move, not even Knowledge Commission chief Sam Pitroda, seen to be close to Sonia Gandhi.
At the same time, Arjun Singh is believed to be behind his crony Ajit Jogi's signature petition(of MPs belonging to the SC/ST and OBCs) pleading upon urging Sonia Gandhi to take over as prime minister after she was reelected from Rae Bareli last week.
Questions: Is ambitious Arjun Singh trying to make things difficult for Manmohan Singh by hurling a political hot potato like reservations into the PM's hands? Is he trying to fire from Sonia's shoulders, as he did during P.V. Narasimha Rao's regime? Is Manmohan in danger if he allows Arjun to go on at this rate? Should the PM sack his minister to send the right signal to striking students and Sonia loyalists? Does the PM have it in him to show 10, Janpath just who is the boss?
