Question: Is there not a better way to work for the uplift of the backward castes, the minorities, the poor and every other underprivileged section of society, than by taking recourse to reservations?
Answer: There is, if only Arjun Singh would focus on the quality of teaching in government schools.

Pune Pact was the most fateful event in the annals of Indian history. It has destroyed SC/ST and its impact on general category was no better. The reservation was given to underprivileged sections of the society to bring them in the mainstream. To wipe out the bad memories of untouchability, exploitation and humiliation. But what the policy has achieved, further deepening of caste divide, heart burning, and exploitation of the whole nation by a handful of unscrupulous politicians in the name of reservation. It was meant for 10 years after Indian independence.
Still it’s growing like Frankenstein’s monster. Fifty good years proves the uselessness of this damned thing. So-called weaker section is not handicapped; don’t kill their confidence by promoting reservation. Instead of increasing India’s literacy level by fudging sheets in remote villages do some work for heaven’s sake! Give the mid-day meals for whom they are meant. Yes, they need a sound academic background. They can get it not by charting 25 new education and nutrition policies but by implementing the on going 15 effectively.
I have faced an unfair competition in Civil Services due to this hellish reservation. At times I feel like banging my head against a wall to get an answer to the question: “Why I need to have105 numbers to get through Prelims when my dearest ST colleague can get away with 75 or 80, especially when he owns two cars and a bungalow in New Delhi. If our politicians and bureaucrats are so useless that they cannot ensure effective implementation of their development schemes. If Indians can’t do without reservation, then let’s have an economic reservation policy. Let’s stand on an equal footing and fight a cut throat war! (Sorry for a lengthy comment, I am frustrated student!)

First bring some kind of reservation in all schools from primary school itself. It means the best schools that always take the cream and boast 100% results and ranks should be stopped. They should be made to take 50 % of the students from villages and backward classes and see if they can sustain their performance.
Government should revive the old LMP class of doctors so that people who cannot get in to MBBS on merit can join LMP freely and after say 5 years compulsory service in villages can be given admission in to special MBBS course meant for LMP doctors to become full fledged doctors.
Though similar option is already available in engineering disciplines it could be developed on more scientific lines.
Reservation for PG should be a definite NO.
