The tight draw in the first Test against West Indies at Antigua reopens an evergreen question: does India lack killer instinct? Is the inability to grab three wickets in the last 15 overs an indication of an inability to go for the kill, an indication of the lack of penetration in the bowling? Or is a draw honourable considering the 130-run first innings the Windies took? Is it just "great" that the Indians came this far after the 1-4 defeat in the one-day series and with three rank greenhorn bowlers in S. Sreesanth, Munaf Patel and V.R.V. Singh after "resting" Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh? Or are we just unrealistically expecting too much each time Team India sets on the field?
The Indian team does not have the attitude to go for the jugular. So, they have not and can never win a series outside the sub-continent. Period.
I find the collective response to cricket in India baffling and worrying. We seem to think that only India should win all the time. When we win, we are uncontrollably, illogically effusive in our praise. When we lose (or when we can’t win yesterday) we go into deep mourning, probing and parsing every littl strand. We call the captain and coach to question. We ask for reasons. We break our heads. We cannot even acknowledge the other side. Lighten up, guys, this is sport and a very unpredictable sport. Why aren’t we so particular about our political or economical or scientific performance? Why do we let our politicians and officials and businessmen get away? Why don’t we subject them to the same kind of scrutiny?
Agree with atmasakshi. Funny thing is, the politicians and bureaucrats are supposed to be accountable to us, so we have every right to scrutinise their performance. Whereas, bcci is just a private club that is fielding the team for its own business purposes, so why we should break our heads over the performance or lack of it of this private team, I have no idea.
Indians done quite well, considering Irfan and Bajji not played in the test match. Batting has inproved a lot considering 4-1 debacle in One dayers. We not won the test any way..but this performance given lot of boost to India.
If our cricketers were employed in the corporate sector, they would have been sacked long ago for inconsistent performance, for not putting enough hard work everytime a deal has to be clinched.
But our cricketers are worth crores even though they have made a habit of winning a series once in a while and losing several others. Didn’t that Windies pyschiatrist comment that our cricketers consider themselves superstars and hence cannot really get down to work.
Our best batsman in the team, Rahul Dravid, keeps getting run out but never learns from his mistake. Watch him play a shot and even without finding out where the ball has gone, he tries taking a run. He is the same batsman who used to repeatedly fail to keep his bat on the ground while making it back to the crease. Sehwag should have been banished from cricket long ago. His technique is faulty but it is still fine with our selectors. If you are a bad driver, you always run the risk of commiting an accident. Would you still travel with that driver.
Look at Srisanth’s bowling action. It is so complicated that when he delivers the ball, his pace goes down by a few miles. He may take a few wickets now, but he won’t do so for long. Munaf Patel is good but can’t bowl consistently a good line. Harbhajan has an attitude problem. It is time he is asked to leave. Pathan and Kumble are the only ones who are good but they are overworked. Laxman came out with an innings of a lifetime and assumes that is good enough for him to get a place in the team every time. Why does he lose his focus when he is about to settle down. Don’t you think he needs to be asked to go home and never return.
Yuvraj is a great fielder and so is Kaif. But don’t ask them to bat. We need a fresh team sir and please inform everyone that we lost the latest test because Dhoni missed an easy stumping chance. If he had given us that wicket, the last pair would have been exposed that much longer and our chances of winning the test would have increased.
I totally agree with Mohan and Atamasaki comments, on top of that non of indian fast bowlers have killer instinct or not letal, club cricket bowlers will blow better then Sreesnath, Patel and VRV. Last 15 overs with new ball it was utter waste, non of them bowled on the stumps. This indian fast bowling attack is Lathe.

isnt it a bit unfair to give so much importance to Cricket, when only a handful of nations, specially those which were once British Colonies, play cricket. Cricket is a boring and most illogical sport, it take a whole day or at times 5 days at a stretch…can any of us afford being stuck to this game for 5 days at a stretch. Isnt that monotonous? Soccer by power..cricket by luck..thats what my old man always said…and i believe it to be true…stop the hype…cricket does not define whether indian’s have guts or not..lets not generalise!!
Bhanu..your opinion is yours..its not a general feeling though. The Game itself has got all elements of patience ,perseverance, game plan and skill like any other game .if you dont like better not watch .

Mr Gopal or whoever you are. You better learn manners before saying such things. We are talking about cricket here and not about Tumkur. I don’t think you have any right to make fun of Tumkur. You should confine your comments to cricket and not make fun of others. KP must ask Mr Gopal to apologise for his comments, which are totally uncalled for.
Thanks for removing Mr Gopal’s comments on Tumkur from the blog.
