Yes, said Prasanna Kumar Pincha. Not giving a cheque book to the visiaully impaired amounts to discrimination. "Lack of sight has nothing to do with possible misuse."
No, said IDBI bank. Unscrupulous people may misuse your cheque book. We will give you a cheque book only if you sign an agreement to bear any risk of signature fraud.
Pincha went to the high court. The HC has agreed with the visually challenged man. He now plans to take on insurance companies which charge a higher people on the blind.
hmm. I don’t get the bank’s “logic”.
But higher life insurance premiums are definitely justified. Or is the argument going to be that visually impaired people are not more at risk?
well..someone who knows a little bit of banking laws would agree to it…they shud not be given a normal cheque book…instead there are other ways to fecilitate money transfer to them..like voice based password recognition…or braile..something of that sort. Coz it becomes the responsibility of bank to ensure that the money is discharged to the rightful owners on the bases of proper and accurate identification marks like signatures…!! so if the coustomer agree to bind himself to the bank that he would honour the mark…there would sure be no hassle…but otherwise..safeguard is required!!
