The contrast couldn't be any starker. The world's most followed sporting event will begin in a few hours' time, and the world's second most populous nation is not even on the radar as a playing country. (As a viewing country, of course, it is another matter, as Unny shows in today's Indian Express.)
Questions: Will India ever—ever!—make it to a World Cup finals? When? In the next 10 years, 20 years, 50 years? Why aren't we good enough for the great game? Are we physically, athletically not built for football? Or are we congenitally bad at team games and touch games, games that require body contact? Has cricket killed every other game in the country? And yes, was cricket a great colonial conspiracy to make the world laugh at us?
Guys, stop being so insular. The world doesn’t revolve around India! Don’t reduce everything to India. Enjoy the World Cup for what it is: a global stage for the best and the brightest in the simplest game known to humankind. We aren’t good enough, yes, but that shouldn’t prevent us from enjoying what the rest can do with a round ball.
