The admission by the Kannada actress Jayamala that she had entered the sanctum sanctorum of the Sabarimala Temple and touched the feet of Lord Ayappa idol in 1987 has set off a tsunami in the chai cup. The news of the “sacrilege” has led to the liberal use of words like “sordid” and “shameful” to describe an incident that happened with the alleged “connivance” of the thantri who presided over the monthly pooja.
Admittedly, women between 10 and 50 are not permitted by a rule of the Temple. Admittedly, non-Brahmins are not permitted into the sanctum sanctorum by a rule of the Temple. Still, are such rules a good thing in this day and age? Is it fair to keep women out? The Travancore Temple Board wants to initiate a series of rituals to cleanse the abode of all “such” impurities. Can we really be talking of “impurities” and “desecration” merely because a woman of menstruating age gained entry?
The gods must be crazy
Apparently, the yesteryear “Mohaka Taare” was pushed into what we now know to be a male bastion some ten years ago. But nobody seems to have stopped her till she reached the sanctum sanctorum . It is only after this point that she says she was pushed and that she fell at the feet of the deity.
She need not be sorry for it. We have her on record saying she saw other women too around at that time. Does it mean that the Lord Ayyappa’s doors were not so tightly closed for women earlier? Did some religious zealot change it all?
In any case, the doors should remain open for men and women. Never mind, whether the presiding deity is a brahmachari or not. If other gods and goddesses, irrespective of their marital status can withstand women in their menstruating age, why not Ayyappa Swamy? It is inhuman to stop a person at any entry point pointing at her biological changes.
It is time women also witnessed the spectacle of Jyothi on Makara Sankranthi. If allowed, should women wear black to go up the Sabarimalai? That is debatable, Swamy.
this is all total bs. My view on this has always been simple: if you’re going to do something irrational like going to a temple and praying, you should shut up about the illogical nature of their “entry barriers”.
ee aastikara tale sariyilla.
aastikara tale alla swami kelavu janagala thale sari illa ashte devaru ella kade iddane anda mele ivradenu alli barabedi illi barabedi antha helodu ?
First of all ee Jayamala thale sari illa if at all she felt guilt and wanted to confess she would have done it in her own house. and have kept quiet.
‘Idhu hege andare Devaru vara kottaru poojari vara koda’ antha illi swlpa change madabahudu devaru summane idddaru poojari summaniralla antha .
I felt very bad about this they are making it a big issue unnecessarily.
In our child hood days i have seen these aiyappa swamis folloqwing the vratha very strictly ie., not to smoke, drink alchohol or have non-veg etc., but now nobody follows these rules. They used to say that if u won’t follow the rule u will be punished. When aiyaappa doesn’t mind male followers breaking the rules why should he be partial to women devotees ?
I think not aiyappa but the male devotees are making it big. Devaru avarige olle buddhi kodali.
Ambar, iddiddare avaru aastikaru aagta iddara? :-) But forget the believers, what is even worse is the way media is hyping up this story. Yesterday while browsing channels, this bullet point on CNN-IBN caught my attention: “Lord Aiyappa is a bachelor” it proclaimed, as if they are stating some statement of fact about current affairs. No “believed to be” or “regarded as” etc. Ridiculous.
An extreme version of male chauvinism. Nobody has the rights to stop anyone! Women should be even “eligible”, to play the role of Poojaaris in temples!
yella ok, ee pedda vishayakke ishtella hype yaake, topic not worth discussing
Ayyappa, a bachelor? Here is what http://www.ayyappanthiyyattu.com, a website on a Kerala temple art on the lord, says.
Q-1: Ayyappa being a brahmachari (bachelor), how can he be depicted with a wife and son in the Ayyappan kalam ?
A. It is true that the famous Sabarimala Ayyappa being a brahmachari, it is a deep-rooted belief that Ayyappa is a bachelor. At the same time, in the three famous temples connected with Sabarimala viz. Kulathooppuzha, Aryankavu and Achankovil, Ayyappa is worshiped in different bhavas of child, youth and married respectively.
Though the god is one and same, we worship him in different names and as different deities as per moorthy bhava. We can see in so many temples even the same deity is worshipped in different forms at different times. In the same way, though the moorthy is one and same, sangalpa/bhava may defer from deity to deity.
In hundreds of temples like famous Thiruvullakkavu (Thrissur Dt.), Chammravattam (Malappuram Dt.), Thrikkunnappuzha and Thakazhi (Alleppey Dt.), Ayyappa/Sastha is worshipped as grihastha (married), with Prabha as wife Sathyaka as son. In so many temples, two small Siva-linga type stones can be seen both sides of Ayyappa. They are nobody else but the wife Prabha and the son Satyaka. In Thanthra Samuchhayam, considered to be the basic text (Agama sasthra) followed in Kerala temples, Sastha/Ayyappa is portrayed as grihastha with the dyanaslokam “snigdharala visari kuntalabharam….Prabha Sathyakasppayad parswayugam suraktha sakalaakalpam smared Aryakam”.
Apart from the above, Ayyappa is believed to have two consorts viz. Poorna and Pushkala, the belief which is more prevalent in Tamil Nadu. “Poorna-Pushkala sametha Shri Harihara Puthra Swami ki Jai” is a famous slogan sung for bhajans.

Hi, Sabarimala Ayyapan was proposed to by Malikapurathamma ( the devi sitting in the temple on the way to Sabarimala ) What Ayyappan told her was he will marry her in the year when no ‘Kanni Ayyappan’ ( Ayyappans who come in Sabarimala for the first time ) has visited the year. Till then the Sabarimala Ayyappan will be a brahmachari.
The Saramkuthi is a place where all new ayyappans will mark that they are Kanni Ayyappans to Malikapurathamma. So that she can know if any new ones are there or not.
This is the common belief about Sabarimala Ayyappan. Ayyappan might be in the form of married in other places. But in Sabarimala this is the belief. So if anyone who visits there with belief should oblige to the rules put by the Temple Committee. Its only after Ayyappan said this in Deveprasnam, the comittee put this rule up.
So consider this as a part of belief and rituals – not something against women as such.

The Temple Board requires rituals to cleanse itself. This charade has gone beyond limits. The basic malaise that we suffer is still considering women as untouchables. Even in the army they are hounded and discriminated and the series of young women in the army committing suicide is a testimony for harassing them directly or indirectly. When the women Maoists oudo men in bravery and cruelty our women in the armed forces are equally capable. It is sheer hipocracy and jealousy. At least our politicians have backed Jaymala and it is a good sign of liberal attitude.
A Lady dancer falls on our Sabarimalai Aiyappa Lo,it is desecrated. What a power lady has to desecrate by sheer touch leave alone that weight! Surely, any chance for us to experiment the same on us.
@Mr.CHAR …Surely you have all chance to experiment if you find a suitable Lady dancer to either touch or Fall on you .
and the sheer weight you still have to keep in mind.

The well known Shobha Warrior says in her comments in DNA that it is physically impossible to touch the feet of Lord Ayyappa as he is situated much inside the sanctim sanctorum ie., if she has to do sashtanga Namaskaram she should be 7feet tall! Thinkover fellow bloggrs. So,she could not have touched in that fashion
the god and the temple has got nothing to do with the ladies going around the temple . First and foremost thing what the people of our contry must think that we are a democratic and a secular country.we must not fight for such a silly matter.instead the women are considered as god ,we should not create such a big mess for this matter
People obviously do not understand that Acchankovil, Aryankavu, etc. are Dharma Shasta temples. Dharma Shasta is the third son of Shiva and Ayyappa is an avatar of Dharma Shasta whose mission in life was the death of the Asura Queen Mahishi. While Dharma Shasta is a married diety his avatar Ayyappan is a bachelor. They should understand the difference between a diety and his avatar first before commenting on age old beliefs. Ayyappa has promised Malikapurtamma that he will marry her the year when there are no Kanniswamis visiting Sabarimala. Women, if they want can visit numerous other Ayyappa temples. Why should they insist on Sabarimala only. Try doing this in some other relegion. Just becuase Hindus are tolerant, no one has the right to change things which have come down the generations right from the days of Lord Ayyappa.
