The next time somebody says there’s no harm in praying, think again. A three-year study of 1,800 patients undergoing heart bypass surgery has shown that praying does not have any effect on the survival or complication rates. In fact, those prayed for had a statistically higher chance of doing worse than not those prayed for. Of course, these numbers are largely applicable in the Christian context where specialised prayer groups are brought in. Who is to say that praying doesn’t work for Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs or Parsis?
