President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam‘s assertion over the weekend that in three months’ time he will return to teaching is the firmest indication yet that he won’t get a second term and maybe that he doesn’t want a second term. So, who should replace the People’ President?
The Samajwadi Party has floated the name of Amitabh Bachchan, but the superstar says he is humbled but not upto it. The names of Infosys’ founder N.R. Narayana Murthy and West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi have been heard in some quarters. An email campaign has been launched by friends of former RBI governor C. Rangarajan. And there are the usual suspects like former Uttarakhand chief minister N.D. Tiwari.
So, who should it be? A career politician or a retired bureaucrat? A high achiever or an industrialist? An old fogey or a relative youngster? And why not a woman? Tell us.
Also see: Who should be President next?
if names of AMITABH BACHCHAN, NARAYAN MURTHY are being proposed by some parties, it means indian democracy is going from bad to worse.
in that case, DEVE GOWDA is a better choice—- he has come up from gram panchayat level, became oppn leader, then CM , PM. — HAS BEEN IN PUBLIC SERVICE FOR 5 DECADES. KNOWS EVERY NUANCE OF INDIAN POLITICS.
ANOTHER EFFICIENT PERSON IS ( RUMOURS ARE DOING ROUNDS) VEERAPPA MOILY– heads 2 imp. commities, literary mind, close to madam sonia.
I agree with dr ramesh …devegowda would be a masterstroke or even sm krishna..hopefully outta site ( or state) is outta mind would apply :))
my bet for VP – Veerappa Moily
president – gopalakrishna gandhi
Veerappa Moily would be better choice when compared to all other names. He is from lowest strata of the society. Knows the problems and limitations of government. He can try to keep the conscience of the Nation.
I think it reflects poorly on the true state of Indian society—politics, business, sport, literature—that there is not a single woman of stature who can even be hypothetically chalked in to a contest like this. It’s all very to talk of us having had Indira Gandhi long before Hillary Clinton. But that was 27 years ago. What has happened since then that we have not been able to throw up women leaders? No point blaming the women’s bill. There seems to be a systemic problem if all we can come up with are movie stars and media talking heads. I would vote for Arundhati Roy for no other reason but that she is young, cute, has a mind of her own, has global stature, has great nuisance value, and can call a spade a bloody shovel. The last person you want in the Rashtrapati Bhavan is a smooth-talking conformist.
NO NO to Infy Murthy..a NO to Gowda..if rumours of what SMK in Raj Bhavan are to be belived…Rash Bhavan will become..u know what..
my choice: Bhairaon Singh Shekawat
As anyone can be seated in the PM’s chair today with UPA Chairperson being the defacto PM, why not Manmohan Singh as the Prez? That suits his personality and will the apt replacement to Sri.Kalam.
I agree with dr ramesh. Next President Deve Gowda or Veerappa Moily.
dear doctor,
A agree with Gowda. But, not Moily. The reality is different from the image painted by MEDIA ! He is close to Mr.Singh, PM (not madam) because Mr.Singh dont like former union finance minister for state. The former Babu of RBI dislikes Poojary.
And, Why KP miss the name of present Loksabha speaker ?
GK Gandhi is a veritable bore.
The best bet is Sonia Gandhi and the Congress will have a smashing record of any bill sent for signature returned the very next day with approval. Boy, it will be Article 356 imposed by turn in every state so that there is President’s rule all over India. Quite a delcious prospect.
Remember L. M. Singhvi was touted to be prez after KRN but Kalam was brought in by George Fernandes and BJP… will he be suggested again?
I guess holier cow — Gopalakrishna Gandhi has a better chance, one because of his pedigre and two, because the left approves him.
I guess Karan Singh will be made the veep.
Swamy Dr.Ramesh naanu nimma yella maathanna Opputheeni
Devegowdru for PM …beda saar . Yaake andre we need someone Impartial not a mere rubber STAMP .
Veerappa Moiley is again a Staunch congress man . we need a neutral person who is as selfless as Mr.Kalam .
Devegowdru kelavondhu VicharagaLannu Opputheeni .
His Politics at the level of siddaramaiah ,Dharam and kharge is good and entertaining . But beda sir avarige yeega ‘AraLo MaraLo’
DG Awarey!
I know Devegowda’s politics in both Hassan and Mandya districts. What issues proposed by Gowda do you agree upon? Please enlighten us!
Even then, I would rather go with Gowda than ‘Playboy’ Krishna!
Definitely not that crook Deve Gowda or either of his rascal sons.
Narayana Murthy, hmm.., definitely but I doubt if he has political ambitions.
Bhairon Singh Shekhavat, definitely if he were not so old. Ditto N.D. Tiwari.
Veerappa Moily is okay, but completely lacks charisma.
Gopalakrishna Gandhi is too close to the (fake) Commies.
S.M. Krishna, maybe, but he may be more useful in electoral politics, both to the party and to the state.
I feel ABDUL KALAM IS THE BEST AND SHOULD BE RENOMINATED.
But if not, KARAN SINGH would be my man. He represents much of what’s nice about educated India.
i say make media the president for a change.
i guess that will be crossing some constitutional/philosophical separation boundaries but that is the most pragmatic solution that gives some access to people. It cannot be too wrong to give people control of governance before and after elections.
there ought to be 70 people( 2 each from the 28 states + 7 UTs) from media in this presidency. 2 from each state and union territory.
from each state ensure that for every gurumurthy, one n. ram is selected.
nationwide media polls on every important legislation to be arbitered by these folks. should the MP’s get a pay hike? 89% NO 3% yes %8 undecided. ok strike down this legislation.
DB , yenilla bidu siva …mathe BrahmaNrella nanna mele yegri beeLthare
DG, please call me 678-797-2073.
Like DG said, he will only be a rubber stamp and nothing more than that. More than anything, he will be more interested to be the president of Karnataka rather than India! Secondly, imagine him dozing off during presidential / dignitary visits… he will be a laughing stock of the whole world !! Definitely we don’t want our son of soil to be called as son of night soil…. no way!!!
My vote goes for someone who can be of independent thinking with good motives and an inclination to take on anyone in the political class for the sake of the nation…. Unfortunately, no name strikes to me at this point of time.
Chances are bright for the Vice president himself or Speaker Somanath
Chattarjee.
Everyone of you have underestimated Gowda. He is not keen for President
post but Vice President, if VP come then the President so 10 yrs long vision.
His move was to scuttle Krishna.finish Siddu and sideline Ambiresh. Ditch
BJP and regain his secular credentials by moving towards congress. why not
Sonia will fell for it with the resurgence of BJP to get maximum MP seats
from Karnataka…
Independent thinking head of state? Forget it! History in this respect is not good. By the way who cares for President of India, outside India, as long as 25% of Indian population is below the poverty line and Indian politics and public services are mired in corruption.
Uttama
Come on don’t be so dismissive…
The same can be said of many or almost all nations!
OK how about this? “Indians are very popular among themselves?” :)
Makes sense?
In the persisting Economic Problems of our country. I think Dr.C.Rangarajan will be the best choice for President. He is excelled in Economics and Administration. His knowledge will be of great help to the Goverment. If elected he will truly function as a remarkable President.
Dr.C.Rangarajan, the Economic Advisor to our Prime Minister should follow Dr.Kalam as President. He has formerly been the governor of Reserve Bank of India and had also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He has been the Chairman of the Twelfth Finance Commission. He has been awarded Padma Vibhushan for his contribution towards the nation. If he is elected it will be a great boon to India to fulfill its mission of becoming a developed economy by 2020. I am damn sure that he will the best choice for Presidency in case if Dr.Kalam denies re-election.
I think we should also consider names of T.N.Sheshan, our former C.E.C. and Dr.M.S.Swaminathan. I agree with Madhu that Dr.C.Rangarajan will be the best choice for presidency in the current situation. He is truly a worthy sucessor of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.
Dr.C.Rangarajan following Dr.Kalam would be great. I think he has pretty good chance of being the consensus candidate of all political parties. I think the choice of Rangarajan as President will be far more better than T.N.Sheshan or Swaminathan.
Dr.C.Rangarajan may be accepted by B.J.P and I doubt whether Congress will accept his nomination.
my bet for VP – Veerappa Moily
Veerappa Moily would be better choice when compared to all other names for President
T.N.Sheshan or J.M.Lyngdoh will be the best choice for Presidency….any how i am damn sure that no political parties will accept them both. Dr.C.Rangarajan is truly a fair choice for Presidency. But what role do we have in electing a president? A president of India is elected indirectly and not directly.
Dr.C.Rangarajan would be best choice when compared to all other names for President.
Campaign: Kalam for the Second Term
Dr. Kalam had piloted the Republic through many political storms and provided the nation sense of security and stability. Notwithstanding his many innovative ideas and Science Policies for the futuristic development of the country, Dr. Kalam had guided the nation with aplomb. He has prompted us to play the Politics of Development, and given the Moon Mission “Chandrayana” still to be completed.
During the Kalam’s presidency, the Rashtrapati Bhavan had received tens of thousands
School children particularly physically challenged and disadvantaged. And by installing energy saving devices and non-conventional sources of energy, Dr. Kalam had saved millions in state expenses.
Dr. Kalam visited every state of the Republic. A proactive President he had inter-acted with more than one million youth and have become the role model for India’ upcoming generation.
He has addressed our soldiers in the deep snowy heights in Siachen, and has sat on the dusty sand of villages destroyed in the Tsunami on the shores of Indian Ocean. And had flown over thirty countries abroad. He is the first Indian President to address the European Parliament on the 25 April 2007.
A poet, thinker and writer Kalam has authored many the bestseller books now available in most Indian languages – including Hindi, Kannda, Tamil, Marathi and Malayalam.
We have conducted a public survey of citizens of all walks of life – men, women and children -academics, students, teachers, engineers, scientists, villagers, school children, house wives, doctors and nurses. Almost ninety four percent Indians wish to see Dr. Kalam in Rashtrapati Bhavan for the Second Term. Professor Kalam has won hearts and minds of the nation and is the most popular First Citizen of India who says that “the Nation is above Party and Religion”.
The Scientist Sage Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s presidency ends in July this year. In order to strengthened stability of the Indian Republic, we support the citizens’Campaign: Kalam for the Second Term President.

It will be great if kalam gets another term. But i am damn sure that our political parties will not offer him the job again, particularly Congress. Congress will like to have a dormant president and not an active president like Kalam.
Dr.C.Rangarajan or T.N.Sheshan will be better choices for Presidency incase if Kalam declines the offer.
A P J kalam is best for india again.
Near 3 lakhs citizens have signed the petition for the Kalam for the Second Term. Dr. Kalam has confirmed that he would not contest the election but he would honour the citizens call only if all parties unanmously requested him.
Dhirendra Sharma
yaar siva neenu nanna hesarge ‘Sharma’ hakkondidheeya
kalam should be our president again….
Their cannot be a better choice today, than to continue with Prof. Dr.A.P.J.Adul Kalam , a true dreamer for India of 2020. First you dream ,then you act & last WE achieve. In his leadership which should not be limited to his terms as PRESIDENT.
The Next BEST choice is the great “DR NAJMA HEPATULLAH” ,If at all agreed that “A LADY SHOULD LEAD” India of tomorrow. She was Vice President of india only FIVE years ago.
In the persisting Economic Problems of our country.
and If india Has to improve or to grow fast I strongly Belive that. Many are saying Gawda or Moily it is foolish . These people kept behind there own state several years. first is Kalam should Continue for the second time.or I feel Narayan moorthy or S.M Krishna should take charge. There Contribution to India is more. there works upgraded the Indian standards.gawda and moilys standard is very less and thay are very much selfish people.
It would be better if Shekawat occupies the place since he has ample years of political experience and has not earned bad name amongst the political class. But all depends on UP elections and lefts thinking.
Certainly left are not going to support C.Rangarajan or Narayanamurthy. May be GK Gandhi could be a possible candidate
INDIAN POLITICS IS PASSING THROUGH CRITICAL CROSSINGS,WITH CONGRESS,BJP,AND THIRD FRONT FORCES EQUALLY POWERFUL.I WILL ENUMERATE,POSSIBLE NAMES AND RATING: KALAM : SUITABLE -NOT ACCEPTABLE TO CONGRESS/COMMUNISTS 2.BHAROSINGH ACCEPTALE TO BJP AND THIRD FRONT 3. KARANSINGH SUITABLE,WILL MAITAIN DECORUM 4. L.M.SINGVI SUITABLE.CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS MANAGEMENT 5 DEVGOWDA UNSUITABLE 6 SHINDE SUITABLE
ABJ is very good for next term
His is not a fanatic even as belong to Buslim community
He has clear concious
He thinks of Nation and people and not to make Pol. parties happy
He is non controversial
he is very educsted and decent
He believes in India first and not Religion First
Above all he is patriotic adn has a vision fo India
Rajeev
I believe that India in its current state of economic boom needs a leader who will drive it as a profit-making organisation to maximise the benefits from the current good times. Deve Gowda, Moily etc. will be completely useless in this regard.
Visionaries and strategic minds like TN Seshan would be ideal at this time.
Businessmen like Mr. Narayan Murthy, Mr. Tata are desparately needed to spearhead India towards economic success.
I cant comprehend how a character like Amithab Bacchan could even be considered for this position. He is just an entertainer afterall.
Two massages by Mr.Dhirendra Sharma are massages to ponder & follow. Dear LOVERS of progress of INDIAN nation, you must add your VOTE to his call of wisdom.
All other names suggested in this poll do not match the statesmanship & greatness of Sh.A.P.J.Kalam, in thought or action.
At the turn of 21st century ,THE LORD almigthty has favourd us with Sh.KALAM’s sence of purpose , dedication and leadership.
HAZARON SAL NARGIS APNI BENOORI PE ROTI HAI,
BADI MUSHKIL SE HOTA HAI KOI DEEDA VAR PAIDA!
We need his leadership in ANY form , as a president or as a professor for next many years. He shall build this nation in every capacity.
Sorry the next choice is with polititions and not with STATESMEN.
Add Your thoughts gentlemen!
kalam zindabad. if we elect a politician as pres then our country is going to dogs. all political party should re elect kalam and kalam shuold himself agree for second term
It has become clear that the politicians are not interested in electing Kalam again. Dr.C.Rangarajan will be tha best choice for presidency.
