The Supreme Court’s stay today on the implementation of the 27 per cent quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in institutes of higher education is a resounding slap on the cheeks of HRD Minister Arjun Singh and indeed the UPA government of Manmohan Singh.
Rushed through with great speed, without relevant up-to-date data, the OBC quota move now lies in tatters, with the credibility of government and Parliament in question. It’s a victory for the students who opposed the move to further divide society on caste lines.
Is the SC right to call reservations “vote-bank politics” despite the ground reality? Will the politicians now bulldoze their way with something more drastic? Should there be a referendum on the issue as V.P. Singh suggetss? Should the PM sack Arjun Singh?

All this reservation stuff is an election ploy.. they rake it up during a campaign and then go silent on it.
I doubt if Arjun Singh has the guts (I wanted to say the “b” word here) to do it on his own. All these are puppets and we know who holds them by their “short and curlys”

Its just an interim order; could change as the hearings proceed.
Good to see that the Court is still applying its mind and upholding basic norms of Constitutionality and Administrative Law.
Arjun Singh, has unfortunately for the rest of us, already climbed too far up to be dislodged just because a Court order called his ‘progressive’ bluff.

Here in Karnataka , a kshatriya (ursu) who used the BC bogey to hold on to his kursi . He was microscopic minority and needed the support of a Vote Bank who had traditional hatred to the two major communities of Karnataka who had a sway over the state politics and who thought they have a birthright to be the CM of the State. No doubt he immensely succeeded and people like Bnagarappa, Moily etc savored the CM’s post.
But in the cow belt heartland, Kshatriya/ Rajput and Brahmin’s are not in such minority and they continue to hold sway even today. But Raja of Munda ( called as mad by his own wife) took the BC bogey just to beat the BJP’s upswing and dusted the cobwebs out of the Mnadal report and made history. So ever since then The Yadav’s , Kanshiram, Paswan’s of the world are ruling the roost.
But a wily Thakur, son of a corrupt father, father of churhat lottery, who was left sulking after the death of Rajiv ( when PVN rao upstaged him) and now when Manmohan singh upstaged him again is trying to hoping against hope to become PM some day and using the BC bogey to help him.
It is premature to say what will happen as it is only an interim verdict by SC.
As for as the Raja of manda’s clarion call for a referendum, he should realize he is not in Switzerland but in India. Indian constitution does not have any proviso to have a referendum. If t was the case then our constitution could not have been amended so many times.
it looks we are condemned to suffer because of Raja keeya forever.

No one in the UPA has the guts to sack this fellow Arjun Singh; at least he should be moved out to another portfolio; No SC/ST/OBC should be allowed to be the Education Minister any more. And our PM should also stop lecturing to Supreme Court judges how to go about their jobs in the courts; in the process he and the UPA are trying to influence – and threaten – the judiciary also. A very unfortunate situation indeed to say the least.
