Following the spate of scandals involving Members of Parliament in recent times—human trafficking, cash for questions, engineered defections, misuse of privileges, etc—the Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee has said he backed the idea of introducing a “right to recall” elected representatives.
Questions: Will elected representatives who make laws pave the way for such a law to be introduced or passed in the first place? Will the fear of being recalled put the fear of god in our MPs and MLAs? Will it ensure accountability and put an end to the misdeed of elected representatives? Or has Indian electoral democracy reached the point of no return?
