In the seemingly unbelievable world of Indian politics, impossible is nothing. Just when it seemed like the election of the next President was petering out into a tame battle between the usual suspects, Mamata Banerjee has set off a a ripple by proposing the name of Atal Behari Vajpayee. The former prime minister has kept mum, but will his stature enable the NDA leader to take on a combined UPA candidate like, say, Somnath Chatterjee or Pranab Mukherjee, far better than say Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekawat? Will his election end the bipartisanship that has become India’s bane? Or is he too old, too predictable, and too suspect to evoke support across the board?
