The Economist has a piece on why people become what they become. People from secure, stable families tend to become conservative, while those from broken homes grow up as liberals.
“The scientists reckon that back in prehistoric times, people who had plenty of food and a bijou cave with a view had no need to rock the boat; if, on the other hand, the glaciers were creeping down the valleys and the neighbouring tribe were getting a bit uppity, then some radical thinking might be needed.”
A study last year came to precisely the opposite conclusion, as the Economist itself points out, that insecure and fearful children were more likely to grow up into stuck-in-the-mud reactionaries, and that confident kids were more likely to become embittered socialists.
