One and hundred eighty—yes, 180—honourable MLAs and MLCs from Karnataka are to embark on a 12-day “study trip” to Beijing and Shanghai, via Singapore. The ostensible aim of the journey is to study the two Chinese cities so as to learn how to improve their own. The cost to the exchequer: Rs 5 crore.
Questions: How right is it for the honourable members of the legislature to be undertaking such a trip en masse when the State is reeling under floods? Will any good come of it? Has any good come of any “study trip” in the past that is evident in our villages and towns and cities? Is the trip a nice red herring before the transfer of power in October? Or will it end up as a sight-seeing tour as so many others in the past have?
