National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme extended to the entire country…. Hike in the minimum support price for wheat, rice and other crops…. Rice at two rupees a kilo in Andhra Pradesh…. Housing for displaced mill workers in Bombay….
P. Sainath in The Hindu:
“India is never more incredible than when polls are on or around the corner. And politics is never more focussed on real issues either. At that point, the blah of software superstardom or nuclear nirvana is simply buried. Unlike newspaper editors and channel anchors, most politicians know who votes. To messily paraphrase Samuel Johnson, nothing concentrates the human mind more than the knowledge that its owner is to be hanged in a fortnight. Elections appear to produce that result in Incredible India.”

This was news to me. Manmohan Singh and P.Chidambaram were against the Rural Employment Scheme? How could they have an independent mind against the wishes of “madam”?
But then, it doesn’t matter if they have brains and know that this scheme is just throwing money into our bureaucratic blackhole. They’d much rather follow the whims of “madam”.
Nothing to say of Sainath. The publication he writes in, and more importantly his support for such populist schemes points to his leanings. Which in itself is not a problem, but then the left-liberals were not known to be great economists were they? USSR, Eastern Europe….they collapsed not because someone invaded them. The governments threw money to ensure that all people were equally poor.

P. Sainath is a poodle from the N. Ram kennel. He is an overblown pompous ass. Ask this fraud why he is keeping quiet about the food riots in West Bengal, which is ruled by his beloved Commies.
