Adoor Gopalakrishnan in Deccan Herald:
“Our media is so illiterate; they think only the Bombay stars bring in the glamour. It is not so in any festival. It is the artistes of films featured in the festival that provide the glamour… You have to start taking pride and have a mature attitude about what the festival is.”
Read the full interview: ‘Festivals better, but clogged by government policies’
Adoor is right about that. The media( at least in Mumbai) doesn’t give a damn about anything beyond bollywood. But it is also true that Bollywood markets itself better. The fact that Hindi is the national language and there are some four to five states with native speakers of the language also helps as it makes Bollywood a bigger industry than say a Tamil, Telugu or Kannada movie industry. Also because Bollywood pays better, once people make a mark there they tend to stay on. Take Aishwarya Rai’s case. She started off acting in Tamil movies but eventually moved on to Hindi and how many regional movies does she act in? South Indian movie industry can get bigger if every movie gets made in four languages and if the stars are recognized by viewers in all these states. That way the industry will also get bigger and stars will end up getting paid better.

I have an issue with DECCAN HERALD. For a newspaper that is read by half-a -dozen people outside of Basavanagudi & Jayanagar, this paper has great delusions of being a “national” newspaper.
Just read their Sunday supplement, page 2 & 3 which are devoted to films. It is ALWAYS about Hindi movies. Where are the articles/interviews about Kannada movies, man?? Yeah, Prajavani may have these interviews, but to promote Kannada movies only using Kannada is a great mistake.
Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Mamootty have correct grievances but the problem lies with South based media like DECCAN HERALD.

Sanjay Guha says: The fact that Hindi is the national language
Since when? I am tired of coming across ignorant Indians who still think so. Is this a failure of our country or the people?

Dear Sanjay,
May your words come true !! Let Puneet Rajkumar rule Tamil, Telugu & Malayalam film industries !!!
Conversely, you should be ready for Mahesh Babu or Vikram to rule Kannada film industry too.

@Goldstar, I completely agree with you. Deccan Herald doesn’t know where it’s going. DH had a chance to improve its base among Kannadigas
when Vijay Times was replaced by the abominable Bangalore Mirror.
Two pages in the Tuesday supplement Spectrum cover some interesting things from around the state. That’s it. There is no coverage or reviews of literary works and cultural events. Lame attempts at producing tongue-in-cheek headlines using Hindi words or gossip items related to C grade Hollywood celebs is really pathetic.

I agree SumneNeeve. But it’s been officially made a national language and forced down our throats.

At the risk of sounding repetitive I thought it might be useful to add this (from Wikipedia):
Article 346 of the Indian Constitution recognises Hindi in Devanāgarī script as the official language of central government India. The Constitution also allows for the continuation of use of the English language for official purposes. Article 345 provides constitutional recognition to “Official languages” of the union to include any language adopted by a state legislature as the official language of that state. In effect, there are “Official Languages at the state and center level but no one “national language”.

Audiences has become glued to certain contents w/in films and they are made to believe by the populist directors that their films covers all issues accross india. The fact is clearly made by the abroad viewers, the first thing they think of indian cinema is bollywood and according to what they witnessed as bollywood is indian cinema and vice versa. In addition to that, if you watched interviews on cnn-ibn w/catherine zeta jones, george clooney, richard gere, brad pitt, and new generations of hollywood stars. They only consider indian cinema as a songs-dance medium, colorful costumes, elegant sets, beautiful celebrities,etcc.. Ben kingsley also thinks according the same but has more exposure.

Glamour is provided by sexy looking actresses. They are found everywhere. A good many sex bombs are from the south. So what is the problem ?
