The Bharat Ratna debate continues to simmer in the television studios. On CNBC, Karan Thapar pointed out how 30 of our 40 State-registered jewels have been politicians, and how some got it long after they had left their imprint on this wondrous land: Vallabhbhai Patel got it 41 years after his demise; Gopinath Bordoloi 49 years later.
At which point, the sociologist Ashis Nandy chipped in and delivered a bon mot:
“Why not just give it to Gautama Buddha this year and end all this debate.”
Nepal would object. now lunbini is in nepal. they would give him Nepal Ratna
even our gowda deserves it
Why do you want to go back in the time? Let us go forward and think of a really deserving young man. Why don’t we think of Rahul GandhI? Considering the sacrifice made by the family, literally, the President should seriusly consider this and all the people and parties should unanimously agree to it!
I propose the following names for the Bharat Ratna along with Buddha – Mahavira, Chandragupta Maurya, Chanakya, Bimbisara, Ashoka, Harshavardhana, Pulukeshi (kannadigas note we need to lobby for pulki), Muhamad Bin Tuglaq (He is an intersting guy), Shankaracharya, Madvacharya, Ramanujacharya, Basavanna (yes our kannada guy), Akbar, Birbal, Tansen, Sahajahan, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Mirza Ghalib, Krishnadevaraya (kannadigas one more chance for us ), Krishna Raja Wodeyar the fourth (note he collaborated with Bharth Ratna Sir MV in many of his projects), Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekanada.. Choose your pick
all 9 avataras of vishnu including lord ram and krishna… and mohini also deserves one!!!
Well, I have lobbied for AKBAR for years. I guess Ashish nandy beats me ;)
…. also And Mannina Maga Deve Gowda deserves for bringing Karnataka on Indian map. Not many knew there was a state of karunaadu. Thank you DG. Thanks for your services to our Great Nation. Definitely, a Bharat Ratna before he kicks the bucket and before he fades away from the news…….
I thank Aashadabhoothi for nominating me. Kannadigas do have to lobby in my favor.
