In other seasons, a tree looks all prim and proper; stately, well-dressed, not a leaf out of place. It takes autumn to reveal the complex tapestry in its innards—the branches and sub-branches, young and old, narrow and broad, straight and bent—all of which combine to present one composite whole to the outside world.
