Ramachandra Guha in The Telegraph, Calcutta:
“In my opinion, Test cricket may be compared to the finest Scotch, 50-overs a side to Indian Made Foreign Liquor, and 20-20 to the local hooch.
“The addict who cannot have the first or the second will make do with the last.
“The pleasures of the shortest game are intense but also wholly ephemeral. There is no time to savour delights offered in such a rushed and heady fashion. The medium form allows one to take in the booze more leisurely…. After spending a whole day at the cricket one can, as it were, remember individual sips of the drink that one has consumed. On the other hand, after a Twenty20 game, all one remembers is that one got drunk, and one’s side won, or lost….
“So long as only hooch is on offer, I will not be seen anywhere near a television set broadcasting a cricket match. I will resume my drinking habits once the IMFL and the Scotch reappear on the menu.”

So, is that the reason why Vijay Mallaya is in the IPL thamasha of 20-20?

Unfortunately Mr.Guha, to use your own analogy, people neither have the time nor inclination to get to scotch.
Hooch, cheap, available locally, and meeting the 90 second requirement of getting one smash drunk, will be generally consumed far more than high quality scotch. The sellers of hooch (aka the IPL franchise holders.. no one in particular ;)), will make a profit catering to this very demand.
Their only problem maybe that the “raw material” (players, i.e.,) may not lead to the right product, i.e., hooch that does not blind you (or cricket that does not do the same).
There’s also the prospect of high input costs(high player salaries), competition from other liquors/intoxicants (EPL), or just the absence of the right combo that leaves a bad taste in the mouth (watching a somnolescent Bangalore team crash out due to the lack of any youth or energy in the team).
One secretly hopes for the all the above.
