Some big guns have been silenced at the hands of people power, bringing under question accepted notions of vintage, big money, star power, and the suspected powers of the excise lobby.
Former chief minister, Dharam Singh, looking to enter the record books from Jevargi; former heavy industries minister, R.V. Deshpande from Haliyal; actor-politician Ambarish from Srirangapatna; former deputy chief minister M.P. Prakash in Harapanahalli; and former chief minister S. Bangarappa, who took on B.S. Yediyurappa in Shikaripura.
churumuri‘s amateur, grassroots surveys had predicted the victories of the first two, but was on the ball with the other three.

There are few positives Kannadigas should rejoice with the outcome of the poll:

I’m shocked to see Dharam Singh and Deshpande lose.
You failed to show three more promenent leaders here. One obvious is Sonia Gandhi. When her party has lost, she has lost it too and her slide now will be faster. Hopefully now some new leader will emerge to lead the grand old party of India to save democracy.
The other two leaders are former CM S. M. Krishna who is supposed to have brought majic to the election and Siddaramaiah. The latter might have won his seat, but failed to give the needed boost through his AHINDA strategy of winning election based paurely on caste politics.
Bye bye Krishna Prasad, Yogendra Yadav. Indians, particularly middle class, seen thro’ your agenda of fabicrated journalism.
No need to shed tears. What is the contribution of Ambarish to the state? Just acting even when he was an MP,. At least the people of Srirangapatna constituency have understood his personality well. MP Prakash is another opportunist. The person who has tasted power had no ideology to stick to one party and work for it. Deshpande might have been the minister , but look at his assets and think for yourselves the attention he might have paid to the constituency. Dharmasingh had one aim always condemn the opposition parties. People have shown them their places. Let them relax and live on what they have earned
We should only pity for S M Krishna . He was brought into Karnataka with very high hopes of saving a collapsing building. He could have reapired it if there were only a few cracks, it is not to be so….
Thank God , at least Kharge and V Sreenivas Prasad have won.
Pics of Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy are missing..
Add to the list of illustrious losers the pre-poll survey and the exit poll of CNN-IBN which gave Congress 114, BJP 60, and JDS, 37
To recall Churumuri posting which reproduced the findings….”if the election were held tomorrow”, the survey indicates that the Congress will end up with 114 seats (up 49 over its 2004 tally) and the BJP with 60 (down 19). The JDS will win 37 seats (down 21).
turncoat bangarappa and sons have been shown their place. One high profile loser not highlighted in the media is Seetharam son of M S Ramiah who lost the Malleswaram seat.
Vatal Nagaraj losing is also a good sign.
Add H K Patil, Vatal Nagaraj, G T Devegowda, mari Bangarappas, Chandrashekahar [Basavanagudi] also.
A few more old names needed to be erased out of politics. Unfortunately, they are back in the House.
Is Ambareesh really aware of who he is and what is happening around him?
Regardless of how many jaathibandhus Bangaarappa controls in Shivamogge, he now knows he no longer has the kind of influence with the electorate he once had. To have voted for an unredeemable BSY against him says something about people’s revulsion against Bangaarapa’s claims as this and that.
Time for Deshpande to look for another party. After all, he has enough money to buy almost any party in the state.
M. P. Prakash–scholar, courteous, dignified, said the media. Either the media are wrong or the voters in Harapanahalli don’t recognize virtue when they see one.
Dharam Singh–Wish he could have had the company of Kharge at the card games now he will play in Bangalore. Jevargi is too dirty to live in.
Atleast one positive outcome of this verdict is the decimation of Devegowda and Sons. May the family rust in peace for eternity !
BJP winning more seats in elections to Karnataka assembly than in 2004 elections was on the cards but the extent was in the realm of speculation. but the message the voters have delivered is much more significant. They have certainly dumped JD(S) and now onwards it can only go downwards for it is a verdict that upholds the morality of keeping the promise in which Devegowda and his sons grossly miscalculated thinking that money power and caste considerations hold good. Obviously, people have risen above caste considerations and it is a good sign. It is also a happy augury that BSP and Kannada chauvenists bit the dust which means that people have risen above parochial sentiments and not fallen for Mayawati brand of narrow politics using Dalit card. BJP winning in such large numbers means that people have voted across caste and religious barriers. The defeat of many Congress stalwarts and those who jumped the party with selfish motives must realise that basically voters play by moral code and cannot be bought by sops of any kind however alluring they may be. Finally, it is possible that people are now tired of coalition govts and shown preference to one party stable govt. All this implies that BJP has inherited an onerous mandate and has to change its approach and style. Basically people have opted for development and clean governance beyond any caste and religious considerations and the message isto care for aam admi who have been hitherto been a convenient slogan to win votes to be dumped after elections. This means the first charge on BJP would be to relegate Hindutva ideology to the background and show to the people that when they branded others as pseudo-secularists that it was not to shine in contrast as secularists but really mean it by their policy initiatives. In many ways win by BJP in south which has been a pocket borrough for Congress may signify a turning point in country’s politics with elections slated in four more states and the Centre. BJP have lot of homework to do.
Can someone post how many votes did Lakshmana get in Chamaraja constituency. A US based techie profiled on this website performed poorly with 244 votes out of 1 lakh+ votes casted in Jayanagar (having spent 4.5L).
I guess, it is worthwhile to discuss “what it takes for an independent candidate to win a general election” ???? Voters have shown they prefer national or regional parties against independents (only 6 got elected this time as opposed to 22 got elected in 2004).
Bapu–
If our people had risen above caste considerations, the numbers would not be what they are. It is as if only two groups of people matter in our sad state–Vokkaligas and Lingayats. It won’t be long before Siddarama will be sidelined because he did not deliver the Kuruba vote.
Our elections are like a census. They tell us where the vote banks are.
Srirangapattana mattu jevargi janatege hrutpoorvaka abhinandanegalu. What happened to GT DeveGowda?
..and I’m glad that joker Vattal Nagaraj and boozemaster Ambarish lost!!
1500..
Can someone post how many votes did Lakshmana get in Chamaraja constituency
Will Bangarappa and Ambarish resign from their Loksabha seats, now that they know what the voters think of them?
Dharam Singh is so obese that he can hardly walk. The Assembly is better off without his presence.
Ambarish openly and bluntly admitted on Tv that his time ( life span ) was up.
Bangarappa is senile and it is time he is sent to Uttar Pradesh to campaign for the SP.
M P Prakash is a Hypocrite who had publically stated that 2004 was his LAST election and yet contested .So he was shown his PLACE.
RV Deshpande has the stock market for multilying his wealth and with family ties with the AVIATION minister will always be in the limelight.
Vatal Nagaraj outlived whatever he was worth.
HD R and HD K have WON and the Milk Federation and Radhika’s will keep them occupied.
What about BSP the biggest losers in this election. Mayavathi’s party contested in 180 seats and have lost their deposits in most of them. They haven’t won even a single seat. There was big hullaballo by the so called Dalit and sub altern intellectuals about the BSP and its social engineering and how it is going to change the very shape of Indian politics. What happened to them in Karnataka elections.
I think it’s good one party has won, but a dose of realistic assessment is necessary as far as Karnataka is concerned.Unless we have a Government at Centre that supports the State, things won’t change drastically. With petrol / Diesel prices gallopping, the double Railway line between Bangalore and Mysore ought to have been a priority.Sadly, it isn’t so.Even now we are talking more and more volvos, but a project which should have been over ong back, is no where on the radar, mired in courts. If there is a change in centre with NDA sorts coming to power, Karnataka will get its right share. Also, only if you send enough MPs from the State to a ruling party, your voice will be heard a la Telugu Desam, DMK / AIADMK.
Don’t all of these pictures look like mug shots? The only thing missing is the cardboard sign announcing the name of the malefactor.
No tears for those who lost. No cheers for those who won. Where are we going. Nowhere. For FIVE YEARS.

I am glad to see the rule of H K Patil coming to an end in Gadag…All Gadagites are very happy for this……
