I’m surprised that pakistan is lower since I thought they had embraced the free-market price, but I guess I’m wrong. Plus their basket of crude is probably cheaper since they have Iran next to them and excellent relations with the Arab world.

Chaitanya,
Pakistan’s prices reflect free-market prices. Without cross subsidies that we have in India.

Incorrect. I wish I could pay $1.047 in the US. It is roughly $4.37 in the South Bay (a.k.a Silicon Valley)

Norway, further has a centre-right government that has been running budget surpluses for a few years now, and invests heavily in green technology, readying for the day when it will run out of oil. It’s funny to see the US crying over their rather modest fuel prices, while the Europeans with almost double the prices have nary a care in the world. Better public xport, less dependence on fossil fuels per head is wonderful. France has a comparable standard of living with the US and yet consumes only a 1/3rd as much as fossil fuels, and emits less than 1/2 as much per capita greenhouse gases as the US.
@Kaangeya,
It aint’s so modest when you see the trajectory. It was $0.90/gallon in 1999 and now it is $4.00/gallon. Irrespective of the cost of living vs. consumption, it is a STEEP hike for the common man. Add to this the recession, huge job losses, housing market crash (worst decline in 2 decades) while commodity prices are inching higher by the day, thanks to gas and recession. The typical paltry annual hike is 2-6% and does not keep up with the ground realities ; people cannot complain as they are happy to have a job..
Comparing US vs. France’s consumption is fraught with risks. USA is about 18 times bigger than France and has 5 times more population. Guessing your 1/3 is Per Capita as well ? If not the above stats account for why..
If France were to be as big, I’m sure they would not be able to maintain the stats they boast. I do agree European nations are way way ahead on green measures, emissions and mileage standards, but still. Reminds me of a friend from Latvia who was boasting about their phenominal growth in a decade since independence while relatively, India has had modest success. This was PPP factored pre-post independence. But the fact is, Mumbai has 4 times Latvia’s population. It’s got to be socio-economics and not plain economics..
Then there are ground realities : US does not have good public transports in most cities(sans major ones) ; Railways was killed by car manufacturers and cars ARE the main means of travel ; Supersizing is a national epidemic ; Elephantine ego..

Congress High Command regulates the sales taxes invoked by state governments through its spokes person.
Wola.. This is a lot more funny.
The prices of Petrol in the Country is far more higher than any other part of the World. Taxes are paid through the nose but how the money is being spend from these much invoked Taxes. No one knows..
Its time Govt remove the draconian Tax measures and reduce corruption in the Country. Corruption contributes close to 10% of the GDP, since Independence.
Weak Govt’s dont want to give powers to Lok Ayukta.

Madhu Rao:
You are right when you say consumption of fossil fuels increases with area. Sunita Narain explains why this is so.
“For instance, through the market dictum of organised retail we are making sure we have to transport our commodities from longer and longer distances, so that any increase in the price of fuel hurts bad. Then we are making sure we promote the most inefficient of transport – road as against rail – so that this cost hurts even more.”
This is why environmentalists advocate consuming local foods. Organised retail, especially for food items, is not good news even from environmental angle.

these kind of stats serve very little purpose. are we also going to have tables like coffee in starbucks costs some 80 rupees while it costs just 10 in India?
Indians who use petrol for their daily commute can easily afford to pay about Rs. 100 a litre. It’ll be the diesel and to some extent the LPG prices that’ll hurt. Its only in India that the poor subzidise the rich.
Secretareee, when is the next flight to Venezuellla? (did I spell it write?)
Whoever wrote this, should brush up his/her basic economics.
USA $1.047 ?!! where in USA? National average is $3.99
Nitin, this is per litre dude.
BTW, Norway is a major oil exporter and yet has very high taxes on fuel. China has seen a 30% increase in fuel prices in recent times.

Rediff copied these figures from wikipedia without bothering to ascribe the source . Shame on you rediff.

But the point I wanted to make is that these prices are not from the same time period. China price was from early 2007 and not the latest one.
Neverthless we can ask our commies to force some gas from china to india at cheap rate :-)
Ask commies .. we want cheap gas from China!!! ;-).
It would be interesting to see these figures adjusted with the PPP
Slightly old prices.. but this link gives the “true” petrol price comparison..
