The Manmohan Singh government has reportedly decided to name Lucknow’s airport after former prime minister Chaudhury Charan Singh (in return for his son Ajit Singh‘s Rashtriya Lok Dal’s support during the trust vote next Tuesday).
Now, Our Lactose-Deficient Correspondent in East Delhi reports that there are whispers in the eastern parts of East Delhi that the Janata Dal Secular may pledge its support if the Bangalore International Airport is named after the former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda.
“Congress will say yes to anything now. They can withdraw it at leisure after July 22,” he writes.

4. Nationalize all communicable diseases
5. nationalize all castes except his clan
6. Nationalize Nationalists
7. Secularize Secularists
8. Institute Negotiations Rathna prize for himself

I don’t know why Ramakrishna Hegde International Airport, Bengaluru appeals to me suddenly. Normally, I am the kind who would think up artistes’ names or Kannada culture kind of names.

Hosa-Belaku,
You are not too far. Ramakrishna Hegde was also an artise and very good at charming & luring artistes no examples needed here but then you could be accused of hurting non-brahmin sentiments here.

With all respects to Hegde, I think he had a style and culture of his own –something that cannot be squeezed into Kannada culture alone. And that’s what I meant. I know he acted in some plays and a movie or two, but obviously @VPotli is thinking of other things…
Excuse my ignorance, is anything ( I mean physical structures, @ VPotli–better to clarify) at all named after Hegde in Karnataka? If not, that’s strange, he was so popular.
It should be done to taunt Devegowda at least –he who took the value out of politics, the prime ministership away from Hegde, and made style out-of-fashion at all times.

Hosa-Belaku,
Wholly agree with you. I am not sure any building or physical structure presently named after him. Looking at the zest of a section of people here to name everything in karnataka after kempe gowda. I guess it is unlikely any current worthy would come forward to suggest his name.

Where did I say she was malayali? Just used her popular southern screen name.
Her being kannadiga (or tuluva) doesnt matter one bit. She is a keep of Kumaraswamy like Shobha K is of Yediyurappa.
Like Minu Talwar was to Ramakrishna Hegde, Manju Bhargavi to Gundu Rao, nooraru gopiyaru to mudhuka JH Patel etc.
BTW about RK Hegde – was the first to start selling off Karnataka wholesale to North Indians. He laid the path taken over later by Bangarappa, JH Patel, Veerappa Moily, Deve Gowda etc.

Moreover, if the kodavas and the others ask for a separate statehood – good for them. They will certainly make a better place for themselves than with people like you who go defending corrupt and self-serving politicians like Deve Gowda. I dont understand why you try to prove he and his family is any better than Yediyurappa and the others. Yella ondhe jaathi – rajakarnigalu.
BTW someone who speaks Tulu is not a kannadiga. Understand that.

Even by your standards of posting that was a pathetic defence about Dirty Devegowda being the leader of Vokkaligas and shit! If this argument is right how come SMK and DeeKayShee are against him? I am only going after Dirty Devegowda as a person who also pretends to speak for the country as a maaji PM, for the state as a maaji CM and all the development works as a civil contractor. If he is a leader of any sort that would be his home in Padmanabha Nagar. Elsewhere the man is simply a retard and a pain-in-the-ass and I give two hoots to his origin. If any one else had behaved similarly I would have lashed out him as well. Dirty Devegowda’s greed and opportunism is disgusting! He even makes ThiruKa looks respectable! And talking of outsiders it was Dirty Devegowda who sold JD (S) seats to Kongas like MAM Ramaswamy and Malayalee Chandrashekar. Unless you are now going to claim these two are simply Tamil and Malayalee speaking Gowdas in disguise:) Heh heh….
OK given all the coruption cases you have listed against the Yeddi and REddys, how can you explain Dirty DEvegowda and sons and their sons and his daughter-in-laws properties running into 100s of crores?!! WHat sort of business are they in can you explain?:)

my own family we have a mind numbing number of combinations of people who speak tulu and those who speak kannada. all of them stay mostly stones throw away from each other all related. some liturgy is in tulu others in kannada.
have many friends with similar stories.

There are kannadigas who speak tulu and vice versa. Just like telugu/kannada, konkani/kannada etc.
But ask the person what your mother tongue is and you will get the answer.
Even in your family and friends – it wont be difficult to know – just ask someone personally. For example you may know tulu and kannada, but what is your mother tongue?
Proficiency in a language does not make that your mother tongue. If it did, most posters here would be British no?
And this was said to someone who claimed actress Radhika was a kannadiga when her mother tongue is tulu.

dont take this personally i am having grumpy day so let say this
duh! it never occurred to me to double up as a gorment application and ask my first kajin what ij your mother tongue.
what i am saying is in cultural, social and personal terms there is no distinction, atleast amongst the people i have seen. people break in and out language seamlessly. in koTTu-tandu maaDodralli language is not a problem. in pooje punaskaara there is no problem. in joDu jaathre there is no problem. this distinction is more important for ghaTTad melin people. down there many people are genuinely bi/tri-lingual without being reductionist. that is i have never heard anybody piss their pants of becoz i called them kannaDiga when their mt is tuLu. this is quite incomprehensible for mono-lingual kannadigas and that is a problem. i mean how ignorant can people be to constantly piss reddys and naiDus and iyers and iyengars for example. what should one do to prove that they are diga’s?
the best test for all these is playgrounds. i have had kannada speaking kuDla daayes piss on me for not being coastal enough. (namallig bandu yoon enthada maathaaDodu ee byaversi). but never for not being articulate in tuLu or talking about KA as a whole. (ranDe mage i have been called but that was for dropping catches or missing volleys, and not for responding in kind in kannada)
that I have heard from a marathi dooDe from belgaum though. he ofcourse is a card carrying member of MES – what with a shivaji putla decorating his house and all. ‘I am from KA but not a kannaDiga’, he said in one our early meets and would always break into mock kannada, when he thought he was making a funny point.
This was until a bunch of us with roots in North KA ganged up on him, some heavy and nice polish and bucket holding for his missus from kolhapur, vayni yeshT chalo maaDeeri aDigi, vayni ond ashT avalakki chaha hacchralla and so on…and things moved towards watching bootleg hits from gandhinagar and he showed us shwaas.
word kannaDiga can be used to unite or divide. it is increasingly popular to use it in a narrow sense. you decide which to use.
since too many people associate kannadigas with kannada, i think it is time to coin a new word for what atleast 30% of the people of KA are. something that takes focus out from the language and instead focuses on the common bonds. naaDiga perhaps. naaDathi perhaps. i dunno.

A great post, TS!
My friend who is a famous commentator on one of the Kannada Portals wittily observed, “KRV has become GRV!”. When pressed what is this GRV he said GRV has become Gowda Rakshana Vedhike:) and they were the ‘B’ team during Kumaranna’s regime. That aside, I do support KRV as they have supplied some steel that was missing in our Kannada
So coming back to TS’ point, we are all Kannadigas and no single community claims it for Karnataka! Well done Dr. S.R you have been making this point over and over again. Thank you for your patience.

Nothing personal :)
Wanting not to piss people off etc. is all good – but a different matter altogether.
Your long reply – relevant, but not to the topic which led to the comment** – does not change the fact that a person can have only 1 mother tongue.
A kannadiga is one whose mother tongue is kannada. If you classify say a kodava as a kannadiga – who is a kodava? Of course a kannadiga might not really know her/his mother tongue, and a reddy whose mother tongue is telugu might be an expert speaker of kannada, but that does not change the fact.
Finding another word for people of Karnataka for the sake of unity etc. – good thoughts – hope it happens some day.

My mother tongue is Telugu. I can speak read but not write.
My first language is Kannada. I can speak, read, and write very well.
May be emotionally more attached to this language and to Karnataka.
Though I have written like that, may be it is difficult to say.
Let me put it this way: We speak Telugu at home:
We speak Telugu that is different from Telugu language spoken in official AP or other parts of the country.
I think both languages form my heritage, tradition and culture.
I remember a discussion between my cousins and my brothers long ago.
Cousins were discussing among themselves and said
” We are Kannadigas, why do we speak Telugu at home?” My aunt replied “That’s our tradition. We speak Telugu at home, but we are Kannadigas”
AG
Frankly there is no clear cut answer for your question.
