Girish Karnad, on being elected as a UNESCO world theatre ambassador, in The Hindu:
“I may write in Kannada, but the world only knows me through my English translations. I am an exceptional case in that I translate my own works into English. But Indian literature needs good translations—and translations are especially important for plays and poetry.”

Nick–
I too have wondered about the quality of the translation, and the translator was no other than A. K. Ramanujan.
Samskara in Kannada is no doubt a master piece. The translation in English is pathetic. A.K. Ramanujam’s translation is pathetic.
Same kind of things have happened even for Telugu literary works. “Kanya Shulkam” of Gurjada Appaji?? Rao in Telugu is translated into English as ” Girls for Sale” by Narayana Rao, Professor in an american university. Actually it means “bride price”. He thought it will catch the eyes of Western scholars. Some western scholars who are well versed in Telugu and Sanskrit have questioned him. But he does not have proper answer.
