Young Muslim girls and boys break their roza at an iftaar party attended by chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa at Samad Bhavan in Shivajinagar in Bangalore on Monday.

It is shocking to see young girls wearing Hijabs. It goes to show the worldview that the Islamic community fosters and their attitude towards the women’s body and their perception of all males as sexual predators. As a progressive atheist and rationalist I am outraged by this picture.
I wonder how many progressive filmmakers, artists and writers in India have come forward to analyze the social evils of Islam so pervalent in the modern world. No efforts have been spared by these people to analyze and portray long defunct practices of Brahmin Widows and other Hindu women in their social movies directed towards awakening of Hindu soceity. Are the liberals only compassionate towards Brahmin women, who in any case in the modern world are highly upwardly mobile and progressive compared to many communties. Why cant the bleeding heart liberals and feminists show compassion to the innocent muslim children and women who are abused by a highly misogynst religious practices of Muslims. Where are Mira Nairs and Shabana Azmis. They have done commendable work in rectyfying Hindu evils but now they need to focus on other groups who are in need of your inspired guidance.

Actually the practice of little girls wearing hijabs or burkhas must have started from the time an old man married a six year old (or is it nine years) and abused her. In fear of other men following this old man’s practice ( there are a lot of sick fellows who follow this man even today) the parents must have done this…
Right KKR?

In fact you are expected to model your life based on the old man’s life and actions and only then you are called a true momeen. Therein lies the contradiction…
the old man says cover all women from head to toe in hijab and then goes on to marry a 6 year old girl and abuses her…how can a true momeen interpret this action of the old man and model his life around it. :)

or is it the other way round??? That the old man did what he did and the others started covering their women fearing what he would do their women??

Chintaka,
The practice of hijab is nothing new to Arabia. People used to cover their body from head to toe, against sand storms/heat which is common in the desert. The old man hijacked this idea (with other ideas that he had already hijacked from jews/christians) and gave it a religious twist. But following this geography dictated practice in shivajinagar does not make sense. But strange are the ways of the people beholden to a old bedouin man from arabia. :)
You are right, the president did mention it during her election campaign, and those were only sensible words that came from her for a long time.

Are the “Pro-“Hijab”” commenters arguing that Muslims are agreed that all of them must adhere to specific “dress codes”?
I mean, is it “their” choice or one imposed by religion? Maybe we will never know. However, we have all seen Muslim women without the Hijab also. So, safe to say Muslims have some leeway that they choose against most times? You hear this often these days. “Muslim women are taking to Hijab as a mark of identity”. They feel threatened, is the argument. Threatened that their religion is being questioned.
Someone spoke about Caste marks. These would be questioned too…and indeed they are, if they produced violent impulses. How many do you see taking to Caste marks as a revolt against a supposed assault on their “collective identity”? Moreover, what role do Caste marks play in Hinduism?

If we need a role model for this we can always look elsewhere apart from America you know(@ kingkhan who pointed out that americans are breeding vulgaarity/increasing instances of rape).
Firstly if u r looking at rape cases as prrof of problems then u should also know that in the country that u mentioned, rape cases are actually reported by women and in our country rape cases are not because the women/girls who have been sexually harassed/abused are afraid of the police. Our very own cops who are supposed to protect the innocent slur the victimised women and accuse them of being of bad character or of being provocatively dressed. And this ensure that a million rape cases in our country go without being heard of by anyone, neither family nor friends nor the lawkeepers. So this cannot possibly be your justification of a hijab.
If you want a foreign country as a role model look to France, everyone has a right to follow their religion, no hijabs allowed and yet there is a law to ensure that ppl are decently dressed/covered in soceity. And everyone, be it a christian or a hindu or a muslim or a jew or anyone at all is banned from wearin objects of religious symbolism in such a way that it is visible to others. That means a christian cannot wear a cross and flaunt it or that a hindu cannot wear a vibhuti or a naama or for that matter flaunt his sacred thread in public or that the muslims cannot flaunt their burkhs/Hijab or their taaviz in public. This way unless and until u actually know the person personally there is no way that u can tell wat his/her religious inclination is.
This is FRANCE we are talkin about, a country much much much closer to the homes of the “aggressive religions” of the world than is the US or India. If they can deal with secular issues in such an effective way, can’t we? I know a lot of muslim girls here in Europe, i have never seen them wearing a burkhs/hijab, and yet they are not nude/provocatively dresssed. They are dressed like normal good civilized ppl.
Any comments on this being a role model for a solution to the whole caste/religion prob?
