Narendra Modi‘s Gujarat sent Qutubuddin Ansari to West Bengal. How ironic that Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee should return the favour with the Tata Nano.
How ironic that BJP ruled Gujarat should quietly trump BJP-ruled Karnataka in the race for the plant while B.S. Yediyurappa and team (and Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy and Vilas Rao Deshmukh) were running all over the place.
And how ironic that the plant which ran into trouble over 400 acres of agricultural land in Singur should now be located on 1,000 acres of land donated by the Anand agricultural university in Sanand.
And how might it further add to the halo around Modi’s “leadership”?

Another vote bank politics turned into disaster..! Mamata wanted to gain in Bengal’s rural vote bank… It has back fired & now she will LOOSE all the urban votes which was her vote banks major chunk. She might have lost even the rural votes in this mess…!!
Finally WB has to pay the price for mamata aunty’s drama. Govt lost a economic boost, mamata lost the vote bank, Tata’s lost crores of rupees & farmers lost their land…! It was a wise decision from Tata’s to move out of WB.

The Tata Nano is a national icon, an ‘image’, a symbol. Something that we should be proud of, and give it a collective thumbs-up as a nation. The Nano needs to be recognized as an Indian, Desi achievement, similar to the PSLV launch, the moon mission, etc..
It is a big relief that the work will finally get underway. Whether in Gujarat, or Karnataka, or AP, or Maharashtra is less important than the fact that it is at least going to get started.
Mamata Bannerjee can rot in hell for all I care. The farmers of Singur are now staging demonstrations to have the nano plant in Singur!! Mamata’s antics have left them between the devil and deep sea – neither here nor there.

The mood on the street in Gujarat is of victorious cheer. The smug industrious ‘capitalist’ Gujjus are thumbing a nose at the ‘communist’ West Bengal farmer brethren. It doesn’t matter that agriculture university land is being given away for a song (“nothing much was happening there anyway”; “we had never heard of such a university in Sanand anyway”), as long as the high profile, in-the-news project comes to town, and adds credence to Gujarat being the ‘most industry-friendly state’ (a feather in Modi’s cap is only incidental? It only took 6 hours for the government to put all the land together say some news reports).
Please follow the link to the story which appeared on TOI Ahmedabad edition’s front page today:

Karnataka was never in the picture for this investment.
The last few years of misrule by the CONgress and the Gowda family have created an unfavourable investment scenario in this state. It cannot change overnight. True, investments are still coming in for the IT sector, but that is more so because of the cluster built around in Bangalore than anything else.
Kharge, Gowda, Mari Gowda, buddhi jeevigalu… all had ridiculed BSY when he said that he wants to bring in Modi style of government. For these jokers of the pack Modi = communal violence. They cant be blamed though.. as they say… kaamale kannorige jagavella haladi… so these baffoons are used to seeing everything in communal colour. But Modi has proved that he is an astute administrator and investor friendly CM.
BSY has his task cut out for him. He can change the investment scenario of this state if he honestly tries.

Ratan Tata has done the right thing and made a cool and calculated decision in hte interests of his shareholders, which in the case of the TATA group consists of a host of charitable institutions. Vinutha, the farmers at Singur have their land but can’t make much more money out of it, for may reasons – lack of market access, poor supply chain, uneconomic land holdings etc., The Nano project would have helped them find a regular income and put their backbreaking days of toil behind them forever. Thanks to a bunch of luddites and stupid reactionaries, Waste Bengal has become a cauldron of raving lunatic charlatanry. Tata had a few choices, let’s check them out…
Uttarakhand – headed by a tough no nonsense Maj.Gen. Khanduri, who got our highways started and is a feared administrator. But access to Uttarakhand is thru Mayavati’s UP which has been laid waste to by Mulayam and besides mayavati is flirting with populism these days and increasingly out of touch.
TN – Madras is the Detroit of India of sorts, but the first family of the state the corrupt Karunanidhi dynasty wants too much of money. Koreans and Germans will pay, but Ratan Tata won’t
Karnataka – has a business-like and progressive administration – finally – but still not out of the woods with the hypercorrupt Gowda clan and Congress goons still not put into their place
AP – It’s run by YSR a Sonia chamcha, and there is never knowing which way YSR will turn – unsteady and populist – and with the guy up for re-election, he may suddenly turn populist
Rajasthan – Not considered
Maharashtra – It is mired in inefficiency
Gujarat – It has always been the 1st choice, headed by an able administrator, very business-like and efficient. So there we have it!
FYI, everyone. Qutubuddin Ansari lives in Ahmedabad and leads a peaceful life. He became disgusted with the pseudo-progressives of Calcutta who wanted to build their careers on his back, so a few years back he packed up his bags and returned to Gujarat.

Anti-industry is at the very root of bengali psyche because of CPI(M)’s politics since 1940 while Mamata’s political existance is barely a decade old. There is no proof that CPIM has discarded the anti-industry outlook- it calls bandh every now and then. The only person who kept his cool, behaved normally was Governor Gopal Gandhi. But Gandhi-giri failed as Buddha backtracked even after signing deal with Mamata because CPIM wants to play politics than resolve the issue.
The problem of Singur is not solved- because the land cannot be used for agriculture. Neither its returned. Tata still has the lease.
I think in normal circumstances, Modi would not like to give in to competitive sops as demanded by Industries.
Long term solution to industrialization in India is to buy land directly by industrialists. They must stop pitting one state against another for extracting sops.

True. Even today, Govt of WB spends some 110% of its budget to pay salary to its employees, school teachers, local Govt officials, retirees.
The financial situation of the state is EXTREMELY EXTREMELY BAD. Probably worst in India.
Much of Central Govt funds goes back as they often come with strings attached- State Govt will have to foot centain percentage to get the central fund. As state cannot allocate any money, thus central funds go back unused.
WB is surviving because some key Govt sector that feeds its economy n keep economy running.
People talk abt bad industrial situation in WB. What they rarely speak is, even worse situation for agriculture. Agriculture has become unprofitable for major produce like rice, potato. Suicide is rising though as usual media filled with soft leftists speak rarely abt those.

Dear Friends,
shifting of Nano to Gujarath is discussed from different vantage points. Protestors like Medha Patkar, Arundathi Roy, etc, political opponents like Mamatha Banerjee, ruling communist party, and NGOs should do some serious introspection. But will they?
No doubt those farmers who were not ready to give their land might have been benefited for sure in the short term. But only the future development will give the verdict on this. What was missing in all this drama was the hidden or obvious societal force to generate maximum welfare for all. What will happen to all those majority framers who are also poor? Will they be taken care of now? What will happen to their promised job? Even if they get back their land, what will they be able to do there?
Every actor in this sad drams was driven by what was close to their heart while claiming their stand to support the downtrodden. With future investment in West Bengal drying up, West Bengal will soon join the ranks of BIMARU states unless the people will join together and bring about dramatic changes soon. Will any investor dare to plan to build a new factory in West Bengal?
As I mentioned in the beginning, we have analyzed the situation only from the point of view of activists and politicians. But let us also see from the point of view of shareholders of Tatas. This was a monumental blunder on the part of Ratan Tata to have taken the decision to invest in Singur. The shareholders lost crores. As a good manager, he should have considered the risks of not getting all the land versus the economic benefits promised by the ruling party. A good manager with an insight would not have chosen a state like West Bengal where political situation is very fluid. This will go down in management books as a great blunder committed by Tatas and will be good case study for future managers to learn about strategic planning.

Mysore seems to have chequered history about automobiles. In 1940, Walchand wanted to start his Automobile factory in Mysore but British support was lacking leading to Maharaja’s refusal. Yet the Maharaja after independence lent his own money to help F.K.Irani to start JAWA ( As a coincidence the word JAWA is an abbreviation of JA-yachamaraja WA-diyar). But state did nothing to save it. Though Tayota has already got a car plant in the state, it has not become a State approved car for the Minister’s to use ! Maharaja’s sister was married to Thakur of Sanand and now Tata’s have moved to Sanand. We have a real Nano in REVA but state is doing precious little to popularize it . I forgot to mention about Sipani Automoblies (SAIL). It started with a three wheeler called Badal in 1978. But soon graduated to manufacture a four wheeler – a real small car with fiber glass body an two doors, called Dolphin. It was as good any we had at that time. Next came Montana and Montana D and real sedan in Montego. Only there was no support by the State or center and with the onslaught of Maruti it just folded up. Again our local boy Anil son of Bangalore Mayor A.K. Ananatha Krishna produced an Electric Two wheeler way bcak in 1982 called Electro Anil . But again due to lack of support and commercial success soon folded up. He is back again trying his luck.
In the last elections, one Syed Sajjad Ahmed became a candidate in Chamarajpet constituency just to get some publicity to his electro-solar cart with which he went around canvassing.
Mysore’s Somender Singh has made some ingenious designs about improving Engine performance and has US patents and awards . See http://somender-singh.com/. But despite proven records and accolades hardly any support is forthcoming. This is despite the astounding claim that by using Mr. Singh’s invention, the yearly national fuel savings would equal the amount of oil America imports from the Persian Gulf.
It is difficult to fathom the ways of the Government why they want to go and fall head over heels at the Big Dada’s s of the Industry when with little help and Tax breaks our local talent would have done wonders long back.

Sipani’s vehicles were mostly UK built designs (reliant, rover), and were technically upto the mark (at least for the times – esp. the dolphin – which was the reliant kitten).
Sipani was also notorious for their callous attitude towards the consumer. But maybe that is how things were in the heydays days of the license permit raj – no one cared about the customers. Ironically Maruti and their collaboration with Suzuki was one of the first to introduce quality as an important aspect of the manufacturing processes in India.

There was another “People’s car” that’s making waves to this day…Volkswagen. Hitler’s brain child. Turned out to be a huge scam since booking funds were diverted toward financing his war machine. However, Hitler had something to do with it’s initial design.

If Bangalore is known as the IT city of India, it is because of the exemplary vision showed by Congress’ SM Krishna.
Bangalore is also known as the Engineering city of India….thanks to the smart policiies of congress….other states were left behind in the rat race.
Bangalore is famous throughout the world ..as the Silicon City..thanks to congress..now your staid defense will be that IT honchos made Bangalore what it is…
In that way, Modi should get zero credit for getting Nano in Gujarat. SM Krishna created a favorable climate for IT industry…you cannot forget it.
today, if you are watching movies sitting in multiplexes, today if you are watching 100s of TV channels, today if you are enjoying a fat salary, today if you and your maidservant has a mobile, today if you are enjoying private FM channels, today if you have a slew of private banks to bank with, today if you have a slew of insurance companies, tday if you know that an Indian called Rakesh Sharma had gone to the space, today if you know that India stunned the world with its nuclear tests in 1970s, today if india is proud of its navratnas, today if india is enjoying a fantastic growth rate, today if we have an astonishing choice in electronics, in home furnishing, in restarurants, in schools, in colleges, almost every aspect of life, it is all because of the Congress’ liberalisation in 1991. there are 1000s of examples for which we owe the congress too. all you need to have is gratitude, instead fo whining like an abandaoned puppy on the street all the time.
Congress revolutionised indian economy.
Congress has now revolutionsed indian nuclear scene, by ending 35 years of nuclear aparthied.
