From an era of co-operation and camaraderie, the Tamil and Kannada film industries have quickly sunk into a vortex of distrust and dislike for each other; both sides being held hostage by fire-spitting linguistic and parochial hatemongers whose lives and livelihoods depend on whipping up passions.
At the Dasara exhibition in Mysore, a simple churumuri peddler pays a sepia-tone tribute to the good times that have gone with M.G. Ramachandran and Dr Raj Kumar, giving the screen gods an even higher pedestal than the hallowed ones adorning the shop floor.

oops! no comments from Kannadiga and Tamil readers of Churumuri ??
It was the entry of Kalaignar Karunanidhi into politics which actually soured the relations between the 2 states….hope the previous harmony and goodwill between the 2 states is restored
God! Im sad to know thaat Ramanna is no more(see the haara hanging over his photo). I had the good fortune of savourig really tasty churumuri whn i was at Marimalappa’s high school..
Hatred mongers use people of one state against the other. To create a career for themselves they play with the career of millions.
Hate breeds more hatred and later that becomes a culture.
Maharastra is one such case. Let us keep away from HATE
I will be very happy to see a similar pic in TN…esp in Chennai (been living here since 5.5 years and never came across one…let’s see.. just as you gave “crash course” to Kannada “hate-mongrels”…. will you give one to your TN brothers,
I think equally responsible like Karunanidhi is the “Vattal” Nagraj and the looney group in Karnataka.
Hats off to him who put up this photo and to you for sharing with us. A pucca Mysooriga, I have worked in Chennai for nearly a decade including the period when Kaveri riots were going on and all sorts of nasty and instigating news were being published in yellow papers of Tamil Nadu. What I have found that the Tamilians do not have any hatred towards Kannadigas except that they need water. The acrimony of Kannadigas towards Tamilians, particularly those in Bangalore and Mysore perhaps emanates because of those people who have been in Bangalore and Mysore for several decades and still feel that their home is Tamil Nadu and refuse to assimilate or mingle with the local population and accept local language.
Churumuri should publish more photos of this kind.
By the way, Karunanidhi’s mothertongue is Telugu.
The Tamil and Kannada labourers at the Karnataka Power Corporation (KPCL) power generating stations in Jog Falls (Shimoga dist) had formed a Sangha called ‘ Rajkumar – Ramachandran Abhimanigala Sangha ‘ in the late 70s. Their board also had a similar photo of two legends hugging.
It is now defunct. Because all old timers retired and left.
Now there is no MGR, no Rajkumar. Only Ganesh and Upendra.
Tamilian,
Vatal Nagaraj is not instigating voilence against Tamils, he is fighting for implementaion of Kannada in Karnataka and the rights of its people, which is legitimate, where as Kalaignar exhibits unalloyed hatred towards kannadigas through his speeches, statements and actions.
Tamilian,
To give you one example, the Sapphire theatre in Madras in 70s always exhibited Kannada movies regularly, which was the time MGR was the CM, not any more, after Doctor Artist Treasure of Compassion became the CM it changed, while you can still see a number of theatres in Karanatka still exhibit tamil movies.
KA’s vatal is TN’s Karunanidhi!! But TN’s vatal is still KA’s vatal. and KA’s karunanidhi is still TN’s karunidhi.
i.e.,
KA’s vatal + karunanidhi = TN’s karunanidhi + more all roled in to one.
that about sums it up i guess.
wow TRUE ‘ Dostana’ !!?? or is it just to impress a landlady?
Dr. Sree Reddy: I dunno where you did that gene research on Karunanidhi. Karu is a Tamil belonging to a “Vellar” family in Tamilnadu.
kannadiga : Jus like u feel for Vatal, there are people who feel the same for Karu. I don’t buy either of those stories.
Also, I would prefer “Indian” to be my psuedonym but was jus prompted to use the Tamil part because of folks like you. And the movie part, its purely a commercial endeavour. I think you would agree that Tamil, Hindi and Telugu movies are made on a much grand scale and hence more marketable. Telugu and Hindi movies run on prime theaters in TN.
@ Tamilian
Dont you have Telugu speaking Vellar’s in TN?
Frankly speaking many leaders in TN are either from Telugu back ground or Malayalam background.
Karunanidhi, Kamraj all used to speak Telugu at home.
In addition bcoz TN has a sizebale Telugu population which you can not ignore and impose Tamil on them. That’s why you have many theatres showing Telugu movies. There are many Telugu enclaves within TN geographical boundary as far as thirunelveli.
Dear Dr.Sree Reddy – Vellar are the straight Tamil speaking community for generations together. Kamaraj belonged to a caste called Nadars who too were strictly Tamil speaking community. Please correct your info before you utter this. It is like saying Shivram Karanth spoke Tamil at home :). And true,Tamilnadu has always welcomed other communities to live together :)
Dear Tamil Kuvaran :)
What do you mean by TN welcoming other communities? Other communities always existed there before the birth of TN as a land of Tamils.
Even Karnataka always been tolerant to chauvanisitc Tamils like you(Ofcourse there are enough tamils who speak Kannada also well). I know many areas in Bengaluuru where Tamil kids tell me they are Kannadigas and love Kannada and start speaking in Tamil. I ask them ‘Putta what language you speak?”. You know what they say “Kannada pesare(rum?)” Learn from those kids.
I still disagree with you on Karunanidhi and Kamraj. they spoke Telugu at home.(his anscetors. This fact I know well. :)
Tamilian:
From where did u find out that Kota Shivram karanth spoke tamil at home?
reference pls….
Anyways wht r u tryin to prov with this?
mr tamilian…. sorry for the confusion…
Tamilian
>>kannadiga : Jus like u feel for Vatal, there are people who feel the same for Karu. I don’t buy either of those stories.>>
There is no comparison between Vatal and Kalaignar. The former is fighting for his language in his own state and the latter is instigating mischeif in the neighbouring state and also was indicted in the conspiracy of killing the ex-primeminister of the country and called for secession of Tamilanadu from the Indian Union in 1960s.
>>Also, I would prefer “Indian” to be my psuedonym but was jus prompted to use the Tamil part because of folks like you.>>
This is ironical coming from a Tamilian, who are known to threaten the Indian union with secession mantra at the drop of a hat.
>> And the movie part, its purely a commercial endeavour. I think you would agree that Tamil, Hindi and Telugu movies are made on a much grand scale and hence more marketable. Telugu and Hindi movies run on prime theaters in TN.>>
What has making move on a grand scale to do with allowing a neighbouring states movie to be run in TN. Malayalam movies are not made on a grand scale but they are the most meaningful movies you can watch. By that same argument, as a kannadiga I think Tamil movies sucks big time wrt to content and meaningfulness. So should it be not allowed to be screened in Karnataka.
I had been to the Mysore Exhibition today. Told Ramanna’s son (dont know his name, I guess he will be referred to as Ramanna’s son forever) that his stall has appeared in an article on Internet. He was delighted. “Naanu Marimallappas avnu”, I told him. “Gottu sir” was his reply. When we were visiting Ramanna’s gaadi for “Maavinakaayi churumuri”, he was a small boy. So was I. I wondered that after all these years, how much of a bond can exist between two people because of “churumuri” (Not this site, but the foos item!)
All I can say is that Dr. Rajkumar looks gorgeously handsome in the picture. Thanks for the photo.
