In a news item that even the curators of the Bidadi branch of Ripley’s Believe It or Not would squirm from believing, Deccan Herald reports that the “Siginaw” Valley State University in Michigan, has conferred an honorary doctorate on Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa, for his contribution in “public life”.
Yediyurappa will leave for the United States on December 11, and receive the degree on December 14, says the news report.
Does Yediyurappa deserve a doctorate so early in his chief ministerial tenure? Are his achievements in “public life” in the run up to it worthy of international recognition? Why would Saginaw Valley State University in cold Michigan confer an honorary doctorate on an “Indian” from Shikaripura? How much longer before a University in Karnataka reciprocates this gesture by honouring a true son of the soil?

If he had done something like “turning the face of Bangalore around”, or “provide 100% uninterrupted electricity”, this would have been justified. So far his reign has been very ordinary, absolutely no reason for him to get this.

The Siginaw Valley State university and the state of Karnataka seem to have a relationship. The Chancellor or a senior professor of that university delivered the convocational address in 1993 in the university of Mysore and was even conferred a honorary doctorate. I guess his name was Eric .Correct me if I’m wrong.

The tradition is already well established in India. Now, it is finding roots in the US of A. Nearly unlettered actors have sanctified the doctorates. An actor whose education did not go beyond primary fourth standard and who also became a CM also got doctorate. It is least surprising that BSY got it. What is indeed surprising is that none of of the Indian universities got into the act, before this unheard of and unlamented American University!

It is better than copying from library books and websites, writing a thesis and getting a doctorate. To become the CM after being determined to become a CM after crossing many obstacles and against many odds is no less a feat. Never in the history of Karnataka (since I don’t know much about other states) a man was so sure of becoming the CM one day and did become now. It must be some formula or unique skill which deserves much appreciation and certainly a doctorate. I hope our word brained class can atleast now see what the American university has seen in the achiever’s practical knowledge.

Yeddi could have gone with University of Phoenix … they have discount sale on offer Double doctorate for $50 … Dirty Deve gowda has already ordered 2, so that he can be on up on yeddi and have a quadruple doctorate.
Yeddi is getting worse. I was hoping that BJP would be a lil different to the others and focus on development, not least this is the first time they are in power. But it looks like they are just the same. If BJP doesn’t do something about this, I dont think they will get another chance. I see Yeddi jumping ship to kaangi or soil party, if he senses his chair is in trouble.

In Tamil Nadu, the chief ministers were given hon doctorates. Thiru Karuna was one of the earliest. Then MGR and who was also made a Bharata Ratna. Not happens that easily in the West unless the political leader is also a man of some academic substance. But if the Tamil Nadu jokers can be awarded the hon doctorates ( there was rumour that the DMK thambis threatened the VC to ward one to Thiru Karuna as they were aware that he was a street-roaming thug in his younger days with education very far from his mind in his thoose days. As for MGR, it was to show that MGR too can baost a doctorate!!! Some imbeciles!)
I can understand why a small university like this ( which has half-a-dozen professors each in computer science and EE depts, less than the size of a research group in a medium sized university) awards an Hon doctorate to a political leader in a state in a third world country. Usually some old links. A good move. Why not?

I think many peole receive honorary doctorates even though I FIND IT STUPID tradition.The list includes if I am correct in recalling,Amitabh Bacchan,jayallitha,sonia, etc etc.It is just a ceremony and I dont know why it was even started.
That said english media is targeting only the bjp and yeddi,as is their passtime.

I am surprised that the so called “progressive” NRI NGOs have not objected to the President of Saginaw University complaining about the connection between the CM and Narendra Modi. May be they will ask the US consulate to cancel his visa now. May be they are busy with compliaing on Sonal Shah.
If IIM Ahemedabad can invite Lalu Prasad to teach them on management, Saginaw honoring the CM with a doctorate makes sense. After all not every one can becomes a CM of Karnataka State. It definietly needs some talents and ability.

As per news reports, Sania Mirza is to be honoured with a doctorate by the MGR Medical varsity, this inspite of her game going down and she being in the news for looks and dressess than her tennis. Also, the guys at the university deemed her fit than the world chess champ Anand, who ironically is based in Chennai!!
If people like Dr. Karuna, Dr.Jayalalitha, Dr. MGR can get then what is wrong in BSY getting??

You can try buying PHd from Osmania and Kakatiya university from Andhra. You might have to spend about 1.5 lakhs for the doctorate. It is very easy to get it from there. Be careful while displaying the name of the university in your resume as it has a dubious distinction.
Another alternative is you can easily buy Phds from many non descript American universties. It will cost a lot more than Andhra. Something around 5 – 10 lakhs. I know some folks who have brought their american PHds and flaunt it in their CVs. Its a good business proposition and sole means of survival for some american universities to sell degrees and doctorates.

With Google and Wiki around you can write any thesis on subjects like social science, management, politics etc.

See this movie in 2007 “21” by Kevin Spacey which seems to be a true story of getting scholarship at MIT. They are not just looking at your academics to give you full scholarship, you have to do something extraordinary. At the end of the movie, Professor who is listening to the story drops his jaw.
Winning a election and staying put among these jumping frogs to be a Karnataka CM is “extraordinary” especially when these ugly, nasty, unethical gowda’s dogshit politics is involved.
Congratulations to yediyurappa, go kick their ass and finish them off, which will be good for the town, city, state and the COUNTRY.

Yediyurappa is a government servant who is collecting a salary from the taxes we pay. If he is spending my hard earned money to go on foreign jaunts to buy useless doctorates from unheard of universities, then yes, I have a reason to be pissed.
Shilpa Shetty and Sania on the other hand are free to do what they want. They can both open their own universities and give each other doctorates for all I care.

Dr. K S Hegde of Mysore University was a great friend of Dr. M S Kanthi. Hegde’s daughter was staying at Kanthi’s house in the USA, when she was a student there. Because of this ‘ Runa ‘ Eric Gilbertson got an honorary doctorate. Hegde is no longer Kanthi’s friend.

Yedyurappa deserves it. He was bron in farmers family in a village and grown to CM. He led various public movements in his four decades public life. He has been a Minister of various portfolios, the Finance Minister and now the Chief Minister. He brought up several innovatives programs when he was Finance Minister. Those who crticize this move are really blind of his contribution to the people of Karnataka.

May be the prsident of the University is indebted to him for getting an honour from Mysore University earlier. Such is the influence of Dr. Kanti he now collaborates his school (OR Governments?) at Kittur with the University. He also gets a PhD to our CM.

Kodgi, Chairman along with T. Thimme Gowda a former IAS officer (2007) when Yeddyurappa was the Deputy CM and Finance Minister.
Prof. Kanthi said during an interview with the Press reporters in Aug 2003 that he would contest the next Assembly elections from Hungund in Bijapur District. But he did not say which party he would join.

It is quite appropriate and keeping in line with the ever so modest credentials of Yeddy that he gets his doctorate from an obscure U helped along by a professor who could probably grace the present Mysore U going by his academic skills.
OTOH our own Somnalli Kitta turned out to be a duffer in spite of being a Fulbright scholar and shit. Jayalalitha, that lady of gargantuan undergarments beat him black and blue over the Kaveri water issue:)
Also Somnalli Kitta was clueless on dealing with conservationist Veerappa and his body of men. Then Kitta made sure Sonia owed him big time by quietly helping Telgi to have a go at the Indian Economy in his own maverick way by printing personalized stamp papers and other monetary documents. In fact, I think Kitta will go down as the most corrupt Fulbright scholar ever in history.
