Dileep Premachandran on Sachin Tendulkar‘s 41st century at the Chepauk, on cricinfo.com:
“Those that aren’t Indian struggle to fathom exactly what Tendulkar means to so many millions, and it’s doubtful whether even those that live here really comprehend just how much a part of the national consciousness he has become. He is such a unifying force, a personality capable of stirring the emotions in every nook and corner of a vast land. And in these times of distress and anger, it was so very appropriate that it would be Tendulkar who put the smiles back on at least a few faces.”
True, very true…In my country everyone who provides “just entertainment”, be it in form of movies or sports stir emotions and trigger unexpected reactions, for example, there will be an entire flurry of angry comments against me if i say,” there is nothing SOooo special about tendulkar/shah rukh”, let alone slander them;
But what i find amazing/disturbing is that there is absolutely no emotion/ sense of responsibilty when the question put forward is individual responsibility to society! Or for that matter, there is also no comprehension of the famous indian motto,”unity in diversity”. Everyone seems to be one with the others as long as their needs/requirements are catered for, else the rest are automatically enemies of community/religion/group/minority/majority/…….list goes on ad infinitum ad nauseum!
It’s a great knock by Sachin and a fantastic victory chasing close to 400 on the IV innings. It’s a bigger effort from The English team who had stayed in Taj Hotel few days before the tragedy to come and play in India. The match and the way it was played helped forghet the trauma to some extent.
But I am afraid our Government has already lost the plot on teaching pakis a lesson after the gruesome terror perpetrated on India from their soil.As an answer to Pakistan’s intranasigence, Prime Minister already wants ‘normal’ relations with Pakistan, West is harping on fighting ‘their terror’ on Afghanistan border along with Pakistan! The so called ‘house arrest’ is off now. Everything back to square one. Where does that leave us?
All this talk abt cricket unifying the nation is all BIG BS, its just used as a diversionary tactic by the media
Just about everyone agrees that Tendulkar is the closest thing to God when he is, but a great cricketer doing his job.
Dear Kannadigas:
I don’t understand this revulsion towards outsiders. Honestly, if all the outsiders doing jobs in Bangalore-from cleaning toilets and breaking stones to running IT companies and malls were to suddenly leave Bangalore would wither away. All the industries would translocate to neighbouring TN/AP/Guj.
What will be left of Bangalore if all the outsiders leave? What will remain? Just some government officers, police officers, maids and politicians. There will be liternally nothing left.
What is the difference between Bangalore and Tumkur, Hubli, Dharwad, Belgaum? It’s outsiders. It’s these outsiders who came to Bangalore when it was a small, sleepy town and then demanded facilities which they were used to back home. These facilities came up because they spent money and thus these facilities came up. Do you see those malls, multiplexes, shopping complexes, night clubs and so on? Why did they come up? Because of outsiders spending money and generating jobs for locals as a result.
Get rid of outsiders at your own peril. If all the outsiders leave there will precious little left in Bangalore.
Try to understand. Outsiders get the well-paying jobs and then spend money on buying houses, clothes, food etc. As a result, they generate jobs for piss-poor locals from Hassan, Ramanagara, Hosur to come and earn money as maids, drivers, sweepers, cooks, cleaners, security guards and so on. In turn, when outsiders buy houses it generates jobs for poor north Kannadigas. Shetty resteraunt owners are able to earn income from the money spent by non-Kannadiga software engineers.
If tomorrow Bangalore is hit by a terrorist attack who do you think will come to defend it? It’s Bhaiyya and Bihari commandos. Yet you have the audacity to talk about influx?
As for mass migration, well brother, global talent flows everywhere. Kannadigas migrate to the US/UK/Russia and Biharis migrate to KA. You can’t complain about mass migration-it’s part of the global labour flow. Just as capital and enterprise can be mobile, so too can labour be. Biharis and other outsiders have every right to migrate to Karnataka in as large numbers as they want-whether 100,1000,10000, 100000 or whatever. It’s their country as much as it’s yours.
Bangalore belongs to all Indians, not just Karnataka or Kannadigas. Every Indian has a right to migrate to Bangalore and live and make a living there. Those who oppose this should be lined up and shot. They are as bad as Jinnah.
Those who oppose mass migration oppose the very idea of India. It is shocking and unacceptable that Kannadigas argue that Karnataka belongs to them. There is no place for such bigoted and facist Nazi-like thinking. Those who oppose the idea of Kannadigas becoming a minority in Karnataka imply that KA is their posession.
Keep in mind: without India, Karnataka will be no better than Bhutan or Nepal. If all the non-Kannadiga software engineers leave, IT will collapse. If all the non-Kannadiga enterpreneurs leave Bangalore will be deserted.
Proud Indian – Grow the balls to do what you threaten.
I detest North Indians who come to Karnataka…grow families here and yet remain apart from the people of this land.
I will detest Kannadigas abroad if they revel in their Kannada Associations at the cost of their local relationships.
And no, Biharis and the rest are not welcome in droves. They will be called if they are needed, which is happening now.
Why should they come?
Well, where else will they go? They cannot remain in Bihar or like states. They will rot there. You know that…don’t you?
Again, let Kannadigas worry about Karnataka without India. I suggest you worry about Bihar within India. That state still doesn’t work.
You have some nerve writing this post and expect to be taken seriously. Start asking yourself the reason why your brethren leave their own States. Stay back there and improve your own lot I say!
Fool!
“What will be left of Bangalore if all the outsiders leave? What will remain? ‘
Nimmantha muTTaLaru lecture hodyodu tapputte!
@Proud Indian
Could you? Could You?…. please please leave… as Palahalli says..we’ll figure out how to live…and if something comes up we’ll call you
Non-kannadigas have a right to be in karnataka as per the freedom granted to them by democratic rule.
Most of them however, abuse this right by not being making an effort to be romans in rome. They insist on speaking their own regional languages and eventually impose it upon everyone else. The generous-to-a-fault tolerant kannadigas are to be blamed to an extent for allowing this to happen.
How to rectify this? To start with, next time, you hear someone talk in Hindi, tamil, telugu, malyalam, etc., respond in Kannada like I do. If the other person does not make an attempt in Kannada, then too bad for him /her.
This alone will make a big difference to visitors’ attitudes.
But you guys won’t do this, will you? :-)
That’s why I admire the French. You can live in France for as long as you like, but if you don’t speak French, they won’t speak any other language with you. Even if they know any other language.
Their utter disregard for english is legendary. Travelers who happen to be in Terminal 3 of the CDG airport, Paris the next time, please observe their big bold misspellings in english. Eg: “Witch Terminal?” and “Witch Flight?”
Flight attendants and airport staff care a fcuk for English and your protests if you can’t understand what they say. I love it!
Proud Indian:
Karnataka is the land of kannadigas, kannada culture. Bengal is the land of bengalis and bengali culture and list goes on. But that doesn’t mean outsiders are not allowed.
Remember when india became independent all the princely states and other regions agreed to get united and become a part of this great country on a condition that states will be formed on a linguistic basis and sufficient power will be given to each state to protect and develop it’s culture.
And there is no doubt that southern karnataka is geographically blessed both in terms of natural resources and climate. So naturally it attracts a lot of people. But you have to understand that if people from other states start moving in at such huge numbers there is going to be some clash. And let me tell you apart for some grumbling here and there, no clash has happened.
As a response to your childish and silly comment of bhaiyyas in NSG, you need to understand the difference between a regional issue and a national issue. And i assume you know about Kodagu, a district in karnataka, where atleast 1 in a family is serving in indian army. It stands next to punjab in that regard. But that doesn’t mean people from kanataka have the right to move in large numbers to any state in india.
So my dear friend, if you stay in karnataka for a long time, try to learn kannada and if your child studies here make sure she learns kannada and please don’t forget your language, people and culture.
Because the beauty of MOTHER INDIA lies in her DIVERSITY.
JAI HIND, JAI KARNATAKA MAATHE
We have had this debate a few times. Palahalli, you are spot on as usual! Howver Im waiting for Sisya to comment!
I never understand people who revel in isolation!
Navyake eSHtu kopa madkoltivi? Namagyake kannada mathadadavara mele sittu?
Bhashe ondu madhyama. It is not an end in itself. What is important is to communicate and understand each other.
We gained independence as a nation, and we will raise or fall as a nation.
Namma sankuchita bhavanegalannu adhumi ittukondu Bharatada Yeligegagi dudiyona.
“Namma sankuchita bhavanegalannu adhumi ittukondu Bharatada Yeligegagi dudiyona”
Nijavaglu ?? Ee aaropa kannadigara mele herokke munche swalpa taleyetti bere kade nodi swamy. sankuchita is the last word I’d use for Kannadigas.
“Namagyake kannada mathadadavara mele sittu?”
Sittu alla swamy… just bejaru ashte. Neeve heLi. nimma manege bandu, nimma aathithya sweekarisi nimma culture/tradition/bhaashe matadolla annovra mele sittu barolve ? bari ashte adre aytu. Eno tammindane kannadigaru ondishtu oota madtidare anta pose kotre uryolva?
No one revels in isolation….It’s always give and take. Nimma culture swalpa kodi.. namdu tagolli..at least respect madi!
harkol – “Namma sankuchita bhavanegalannu adhumi ittukondu Bharatada Yeligegagi dudiyona.” – Yaakri?
Last night, for my daughter, I composed a short essay on the liberation of Gomantak from Portuguese rule. Dec 17, is the anniversary of that end. The essay was in Hindi.
Is it not strange that a supposed Kannada fanatic will write about Gomantak in Hindi? In my opinion, it’s not.
What are my specific grievances?
1. Lack of Respect – Not only are the majority of Non-Kannadigas and mostly folks from the North, are disrespectful of the language, they carry this virus to the people themselves. (I speak from personal experience, no exceptions here)
Indeed, the new fashion is, “why?” “why should we speak in Kannada?” “Bangalore is a cosmopolitan city!”
A classic I generally comes across is this, “I’m surprised you don’t speak Tamil after being in Bangalore for such a long time!.” And this from Tamilians, so there is no sarcasm there.
2. “Natives” – Non-Kannadigas born and brought up in Karnataka refuse to imbibe local culture. Refuse to speak it’s tongue.
I do not remember anything drastic that Kannadigas have done to warrant this kind of treatment.
No, we do not revel in isolation. Whatever makes you think that?
And the irony is with attitudes like these, the same folks blame Raj Thackrey! Have a mirror in the house?
“the same folks ”
yarappa ee “same folks” ?? elaborate please
@Proud Indian
The Manufacturing/IT companies didnot open at Bengaluru to attract the likes of u “Who have raised from Heaven” to come to Bengaluru and and Prosper Bengaluru and life of the Localites who, accd to u, just do the Jobs of Maids, Petty Shops, Hotels/Darshinis, Security Guards…But u r here JUST BECAUSE U NEEDED A GOOD JOB WHICH U COULDNOT GET IN THE PLACE WHERE U WERE BORN AND BROUGHT UP. We are not against u or like of u staying in Bengaluru or whatever, Just that in the Name of yelling yrself as “Proud Indian”, you are making an attempt to thrash the Language/culture/sentiments of localites.
And, just because it is Bengaluru/Karanataka and Kannadigas. If u do the same in our Sweet(!) Neighbourhood TN and Chennai “ನರ ಕಿತ್ತು ಟೋಪಿ ಸುತ್ತು ಕ್ಯೆಗೆ ಕೊಡ್ತಾರೆ”
Your Myth that “Outsiders get the well-paying jobs and then spend money on buying houses, clothes, food etc” may be true. What u fail to understand that Everyone who in the IT/ITES Industry gets well paid, Not just the “heavenly raised OUTSIDERS”.
We are pissed off with all the biased attitides of the likes of u. Every measure is taken to ensure that most of the Elite Jobs are given to “Outsiders” by the current mass of “Outsiders”. Our Lallo Bhai goes to the extent of not publishing the Railway Exams and Dates in Karnataka in any of the Local/National Daily But gets his Bhais from Bihar to Write Exams in Tons.
Call yourself as an Indian when u r truly an Indian by heart, When u respect every other’s Language/Culture as u do yours(I guess u do), be impartial, when u dont impose your Language on the Locals(Be it a Telugu, Tamil, Hindi or what ever) NOT JUST BECAUSE U WANT TO MIGRATE IN THE NAME OF JOB…
Anyways, neither u or likes of u ot change yr attitude nor me will keep bothering u as long as u be just yourself.
Get a Life!
Outsiders need some good treatment. These beggars who can produce laloos, balus, velus, karunanidhis in their states cannot create a single decent job. Shamelessly they declare Blore is a cosmo city. Is it a compliment to u Mr. Mallu/tamil/telugu/bihari/all northis? You ppl say there r many creatures from abv said tribes. That means yours states r impotent.
Your politicians are impos. and so is ur culture.
Karnataka is a prosperous state. We created world class jobs witout help from central govt( as u know, centre is always biased against Karnataka- as u can see in rail budget for example- whichever party is in power).
What stops u from recreating the magic of Karnataka, in terms of JObs, education and more importantly the conducive atmosphere?
Do some introspection, if u have any self respect.
