Oh! Com on! Who can sleep in that position. My friend he is prostrating before the deity locked in the mini temple.

Anyhow I understand now why the white men used to put up sign boards saying “Dogs and natives are not allowed”

In a way the man is lucky. He wont be chased and caught and thrown into a dog pound. Small mercies!

“What is he praying for? ” This appears to be a better caption for the photo.
    Please make a guess.

Man..I think in a way churumuri wants to highlight the surge in population of the dogs..I guess according to my conservative estimate , they have tripled in numbers causing lot of fear and inconvenience among the elders and children..BBMP is not bothered..

Coming back to the snap, the guy seems to have started the day and the canines are sleeping to glory after a ‘hardworking’ noisy night..

    Did someone read this one
    http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Cities/Bombay_HC_okays_culling_of_stray_dogs/articleshow/3864584.cms

Hope someone wakes up before these rabid dogs kill another kid as it happened..no doubt the canines have a right to live as the so-called animal sympathists will shout..but at the cost of human beings..surely NOT..I should say even we human beings have a right to live without fear of movement on our own streets..atleast a high court bench has understoo, will the relevant authorities bother?

    @ Raghav,

    ‘our own streets’ ????

that is the fallacy… we humans consider everything ‘our own’. We displace other species from ‘their own’ territories and then call them ‘our own’…

am one of those ‘so-called animal sympathists’ and yeah, i do shout at people committing atrocities on animals in the name of ‘pervention’, ‘safety’ and for pure sadistic pleasure, driving them to turn aggressive in turn.

the relevant authorities are concerned and are doing much. if you delve a little on this topic, you will learn more and be wiser.

    >>> Let the sleeping dogs sleep!

BUT BUT Will these stray dogs allow humans to sleep in peace ? Even in posh areas like Indiranagar there are dozens of strays roaming and creating ruckus disturbing the feeble sleeping patterns of infants and senior citizens..

Are the authorities just waiting for someone to be fatally attacked again by these dogs ?? How many lives have to be taken away to drive the point that culling or rehabilitating these stray dogs is the only imminent solution ????????

Hello madam..You should be one of those ladies moving around in posh cars and do not have to bother abt stray dog menace(Have seen many such people from CUPA/Such publicity seeking and money minded organisations)..but ask a BPO/IT worker who is dropped near his house at 2 AM and everytime it is a challenge for him/her to reach his/her house safely..

and hey lady, we are not talking abt sadism/perversiveness..you do not have even the primal sense to distinguish between sadism and risk-taking one has to take in real life when the dogs dominate on the streets at late nights..Mind you, what we are talkin is abt equality of rights..if humans do not have the liberty to move around without fear, why should another creature have the right..plain common sense, you know..

I would advise you to take a long bike ride or a 3 km. walk at midnight today..you will will surely be enlightened..trust me, you will come here n support me if at all you escape the gangs and do not end up in hospital with dog bites :) cos u will never understand until the fear of a dog bite visits you personally..all the best !

Ms.Smita Have you read what raghav had to say properly.? I do not think so. Do not get fixed into terming every person who support culling stray dogs as sadist. You must mind your words. As raghav said elders and infants are suffering in the night cos the cacophony has to be heard to be believed. It is most disturbing and will feel them helpless.

As for your statement that authorities are doing everything you must be dreaming. I surely see that dog count on the streets have increased exponentially in the last few months. Have been in Bangalore for a decade now. Never have I seen these many at one shot. If we listen to people like smita , these ‘great’ folks will advise humans to be rehabilitated than the dogs !!

Posh Areas like Indira nagar…wonderful. You say they can stay in other areas.OK. Dogs like men do not discriminate between rich and the poor. They are not class-conscious. What about the vehicle movement all the 24 hours of the day. Autos ply evenin Indira nagar I suppose. What about heavy vehicles? Don’t disturb the sleep? In that case better to ban the traffic during wee hours say between 1 am to 4 am. Culling yes at what cost, in many years and streets these street dogs take care of protecting the houses and streets.

I think someone in the media(maybe churumuri) has to do something on this stray dog menace before it becomes too late. I see their pack growing in numbers as every week passes.

Ofcourse, govt will wake up only when something fatal happens as mr.Raghav pointed ! I think the animal birth control program(ABC) is a big bogus and the involved organisations seem to have done nothing but visit their bank accounts !

Coming back to the topic: I do not belong to any NGO, i do not live in a ‘posh area like indiranagar;, and stray dogs are common in my area…

    * i know that BBMP/designated animal welfare organizations attend to your call to conduct the ABC activities – it may take them some time/ 2-3 follow up calls from you- but they do attend. I have done so on a couple of occasions.

they do have bandwidth issues and face logistical challenges attending to all complaints. but i really must appreciate how much they do

    * i have seen a case of mass culling of dogs in rupanagar in mysore – some 30-40 killed in a single day – torturously, mercilessly. A month after that incident – and if you visit the layout now – you will see new dogs back on the streets. the only cause the culling served was to make space for dogs from outside to make territories and breed inside.

    * our residents association in bangalore has now taken it upon ourselves to do the following to reduce the number of and the aggressive behaviors of stray dogs: 1) discourage shopkeepers/ construction workers/ residents from feeding/ dumping edibles on roadsides 2) catch the dogs and have the local vet spay them 3) disperse dogs when they collect as a group (which they do for security reasons) in places where crowds gather (potential for panic/ confrontation) – this takes physical effort but is not so difficult and then they learn to avoid such places. 4) and finally when we have seen pups on our roads, we have waited till the mother weans them and then taken them to CUPA (please do not expect them to come collecting pups) which has gladly taken them in.

I hope this helps others take such/ similar methods to address this issue – than just blaming everyone and pitying oneself

I have been following the interesting discussion..you know some guys seem to be worked up with the word posh area..I guess smita/satya need to grow up to understand that raghav( i am sure) has used it to amplify if Indiranagar is affected how about a seemingly not so upmarket places like say sivajinagar/babusapalaya !

Also I also find nothing wrong in raghav’s statement that even humans have equal right to walk on their streets without fear. Yes as SMITA said he is worked up. I think anyone would be frustrated if they have infants/elders at home and has to venture out in the midnight for his livelihood. Such is the menace that most bangaloreans will corelate with raghav in understanding the plight of the xyz bangalore citizen. Also dont see a wayward statement anywhere from raghav. It is Smita who made things a wee-bit soiled cos of her pervert/sadist remark which could have been avoided.

also, I find Smita finally speaking in some positive sense in her last post. seems to me that “plain common sense” query did ring some bells in her brain rather than the seemingly crude message she shot at raghav first.Yes,indeed the previous post did have some viable solutions than the usual holier-than-thou attitiude enacted by her in general. A citizen assisted initiative will surely take care of some logistic realities in fighting this menace.

Also, let me tell you authorities wont care. CUPA seems to have done some work but has failed miserably in controlling the tramp population. Afterall, they are monetarily fed by the govt. for doing this something. Anyone can vouch for the rising dog population here. The authorities do not have any resources at their disposal(manpower/willpower/infrastructure/money)..Just last week a 4 year old kid got bitten badly by a rabid dog in vidyarayanapura but was saved because of some intervening.
@Vkingz, yes you are right they are waiting for something really bad to happen again.

@ Suraj “If we listen to people like smita , these ‘great’ folks will advise humans to be rehabilitated than the dogs !!”

In between all this serious talks, your final statement did bring some humour here :)

How pathetic can one get. From the looks of it, Smita did not like the taste of it when raghav said a bpo-worker returning home at midnight, elders and infants are affected because of the said cacophony. She is one among the ilk who are just bothered about providing dogs a paradise to live in..and for that this madam has so kindly chosen our bangalore !

also, the last post from her seem to have some very ‘innovative’ solutions but dont find it at all practical(except for first out of the four). for example, she talks about dispersing a gang of dogs if one sees such..Someone should be out of their minds, if they try doing that when they are walking alone on the streets :)

In this issue, What bangalore requires is a complete revamp of the processes involved. The drama played out by BBMP-cum-CUPA cant go on..not at the cost of tax payers money running in crores..this fear psychosis got to be urgently addressed before another human life is threatened. Culling or not, someone in the govt. has to find a feasible longlasting solution. This is the time as you have a high court ruling too to support this cause.

Ps: Was very much prompted to respond especially after I read in the Indian express last week about how helpless the incompetent fellas at BBMP are finding themselves citing scarce means. (This is after angry public reacted after a small kid and nine people got hurt by a rabid dog in vidyrayanpura.)

Fully support Raghavs intentions. The population of dogs should not be allowed to reach such an extent. ABC is a bogus project which has not fetched the objectives. In the name of animal sympathy, we cannot risk our liberty. Also I soundly back Gulani’s call for complete revamp minus the present NGOs involved.

I would ask the lady if She allows pesky creatures like cockroaches/rats to grow in her home. Why should one allow dogs rule the streets at evenings/nights. if they love them so much let them donate their home so that it can be convertd into kennels/rehab houses. They wont as they think homes are private spaces and streets are for public( public=huma lives for which they dont care) ?

    @Vkingz
yes. Someone in the media has to take this up. tough call as this animal sympathisers have an agenda of making bangalore and other indian cities ‘a dog’s paradise’ as gulani mentioned. they will go to any extent in making the govt. do nothing! but there is a chance to turn the tables on them now that there is a good HC Ruling !!

@ Ashwini: atleast you see the common sensical side of what i am saying. (now dont accuse me of being holier-than-thou again).

@ Gulani: the solutions i have proposed are tried and tested – by me. not something i imagined. Request you to give them a try or even suggest more practical solutions than culling (the rupanagar example i gave is to suggest the impracticality of culling)

@ Anmol: why should it always be someone else who always takes this up? I am suggesting here that we can do something constructive, if we choose to…

For the animal lovers: I am going to start an organisation for mosquitos and if anybody kills them or causes any disturbance to their peaceful existance, they will prosecuted and put in jail. They are drinking only 3-4 drops of blood per day which is for their existance and scientists says donating blood is good for health. As dogs are having right to live on streets, mosquitos also have the very same right to live in this universe. The Govt. and people have till date not done anything for the welfare of mosquitos and neglected and abused them which should stop immediately failing which serious action will be taken..Also, here in India, Streets are meant for not only vehicles to ply but all animals to enjoy..We should accept that we are second only to animals!!!. The other interesting thing is how we conveniently decry media and their excesses when it suits us, and quote it as irrefutable facts when it suits us at other times.

Media always speaks of these cases of aggression by dogs – but fails to report how it was caused (of course, any logical analysis of such incidents will see such a publication facing reduced readership and being shunned for insensitivity to human tragedy i guess).

Speaking in general and not in particular about any of the cases reported so far – i very often see kids stoning dogs by the road – imitating adults who are either too panicky about crossing a stray dog or just do it out of boredom. Again, before i get mauled here :), i am not stating that this is the only reason dogs get aggressive – but i am asking the pro-culling audience here to consider what they can do about this – rather than taking or calling for drastic measures

Stray dogs are indeed a menace, but residents and resident-associations of the city should stop throwing garbage heaps on the roads overnight. This is one of the prime reasons that dogs are found on the roads.

    *Raghav, Suraj, Gulani, Vkingz, etc*

You folks supporting the “culling” of stray dogs are probably not aware of how it’s done.

Both the catching and destroying processes are quite barbaric. After the dog is snared with a wire noose and dragged/thrown into a dog van, it is taken to a pound to be kept unfed for many days in the company of other similarly unfortunate (and unfamiliar) dogs.

On D-day, it is electrocuted to death — cold water is poured on the animal and it is thrown onto a live wire or a charged platform. The voltage is insufficient to ensure a quick/painless death. The animal can take upto ten minutes to die. If you ever listen to the yelps and howls you would realize the barbarism you are supporting.

In some cities the dog is poisoned to death using zinc sulfate, barium carbonate or some such rodent poison — again, the death is excruciatingly painful with frothing at the mouth, and the animal can take several hours to die.

I have seen culling in Bangalore, both by electrocuting and by poisoning. I tell you, it is NOT an acceptable solution to the issue of overpopulation. Our humanity makes us better than to support that. Dogs are sentient beings, and full of affection, intelligence and loyalty — after all it is not the dogs’ fault to be born unwanted. Nobody who knows the facts can support the barbaric practices against the animals.

Besides, culling doesn’t even work in the long term. Stray dogs from other areas promptly occupy the territory “cleared” by the dog-catching teams.

For both those reasons — cruelty and ineffectiveness — the Bombay High Court banned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation from culling strays a few years back. Instead, the court ordered the BMC to support voluntary animal-welfare groups to conduct birth control operations on strays.

I support the animal birth control (ABC) program. If funded adequately and conducted sincerely in a timely fashion, it is 100 per cent effective. Many Western cities have already shown that. So have Indian cities such as Surat, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. In Indian cities ABC may be the only long-term solution that is consistent with our humanity.

    @ Mysore peshva,
Programmes like ABC and Citizen initiatives are good but it is not a permanent solution. In a place like India, things which require continous supervision from the authorities and resident associations have brought too many failures( As has been proved in Bangalore which has been experimenting with such initiatives like ABC since 2000). The demanding combo required in terms of manpower/willpower/infrastructure/money for such seemingly ‘not-so-critical’ projects make such ventures futile finally.

Why not a Permanent solution like say to create a ‘dog sanctuary’ in the periphery of the city. If culling is such a painful process, it has to be avoided. I or other bloggers am sure have nothing serious against dogs..all, acknowledge they are one of most intelligent and sweet creatures God has created..But given the events I dont think aggressive dogs and humans can co-exist peacefully. Another gal got bitten yesterday, if you have read todays newspaper.

Citizens/Authorities I am sure wont mind contributing monetarily/otherwise if a DOG SANCTUARY concept is brought forward. A possibly lifethreatening and consistently menacing problem can be solved like this. Shifting and accommodating not less than 50,000 street dogs is not a joke and may seem next to impossible BUT if there is a will there is a way. Once they have been vacated, also ensure no new entrants come again..Why not stuffs like phone/sms-AT-sight. Initial effort would be huge, but later it would be easily manageable and sustainable than say other Used-but-failed solutions like ABC..

The word SANCTUARY would surely gladden animal rights crowd too. The crowd can spend their time happily there with the canines, if they wish. Let everyone be happy..The usual banter of streets are for dogs too, just does nt do good even for the dogs. A systematic longterm plan can do wonders anywhere.

A growing,multi-cultural and technology-driven city like Bangalore has the capability to set new examples for the betterment of citizens. We just cannot afford to be stuck up with seemingly petty matters like this. Matters like Child Education, Infrastructure, Poverty alleviation, Corruption, Slow judiciary..etc etc
there are umpteen things which could be given their due importance

@ Smita, Going by her defensive last post after a high octane entry , seems to have almost understood a xyz citizen’s viewpoint..thx !

    @ Suraj, Gulani, Vkingz, Ashwini
Suraj’s mosquito taunt was very funny but did hit the right note :)
Also,Good to see some very relevant and hardhitting posts . Just goes to show how much the menace has grown and how much some people are concerned.

While on the subject…what about abattoirs? How painfully do they slaughter animals in it!

Human beings are intelligent and conscientious. Their decision to cull or slaughter animals can surely rest on painless methods…and yet they don’t think much of it? Is it the cost? In time taken and/or cash?

Nothing will change unless there is legislation and video graphed inspection by animal rights groups.

@ Raghav: at least you are now proposing solutions! If you think what you have suggested is the most practical solution, and if you also have/ can get answers to questions like:

    1) how much such a sanctuary will cost – to be set up, to maintain?
    2) how this money can be collected from citizens?
    3) how dogs can then be prevented from entering bangalore (who will attend to the SMS-at-sight msgs)?

There are then forums you can join now, which take up citizens’ ideas and proposals and lobby around to get them implemented with approval from the right authorities. Look forward to hearing more about this…
