ASHWINI A. writes from Bangalore: The role of television channels during the live coverage of the Bombay terror attack has been the subject of vociferous debate in the media with experts and news consumers accusing the channels of being voyeuristic, insensitive, irresponsible, etc.
However, what the 24-hour Kannada news channel TV9 did by the act of “breaking news” two days ago was not just irresponsible journalism but a criminal act to say the least. It has lent a new dimension to the growing public anger against electronic media.
Here’s what happened.
The nationwide polio drops administration program began in Karnataka on Sunday. Even as the program was underway, TV9 telecast a breaking news story in the evening about the death of a kid due to polio drops.
TV9 relentlessly and repeatedly played this ‘death’ in the form of breaking news, which ignited anxiety among lakhs of parents who had got their children immunized. Several thousands of them—mostly the poor—across Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Chikmagalur, etc, turned up at the government hospitals seeking relief and cure for their children.
They stayed put through the night demanding doctors attend their kids. Private hospitals saw hundreds of parents waiting in the queue, upto as late as 2.30 am seeking medical assistance.
The government medical staff on duty—outwitted and hopelessly outnumbered—sought the help of the police as irate public assaulted doctors and damaged hospital property.
As it turned out later, no child had died because of polio drops anywhere in the State, but a kid had died due to hydrocephalus and that death was completely unconnected with the polio drops program. In fact, of the 60 lakh children who took the drops, there was not even a single case of any kid taking ill leave alone a death.
***
Through its conduct , choice of stories, and style of breaking news for the past two years, TV9 has taken television journalism to disgraceful new lows and on Sunday it hit a new depth by its own standard. This latest disgrace of TV9—without ascertaining the veracity—deserves to condemned as nothing short of criminal.
It resulted not just in general mayhem but caused untold misery to lakhs of parents across the State who were worried about the safety of their children.
Another tragic victim of this irresponsible story is the polio drops program. This initiative has suffered a huge setback and it will take some time for it to regain the trust of the public. There were reports that on Monday, the second day of the polio drops campaign, that dozens of volunteers were turned away by the wary parents across the State and as a result 54,000 kids could not be administered the polio drops in Bangalore alone.
How should we react to the TV9 story?
Is it enough to condemn it and call for self-regulation?
What do you do when a false and mischievous story administers a deadly blow to a well-intentioned medical initiative that reaches out to large, mostly poor and illiterate, sections of society?
Should the government revoke the license of the channel for a few days?
The Bangalore Police have booked nine cases against TV9 for “causing panic through mischievous statements”. But, is this enough? Will anything come out Police case against TV9 ? Will TV 9 learn its lessons or will it be back to business soon and unleash further horrors on an unsuspecting public?
Is it a good idea for the people to come together and march to the offices of TV9 office to register their outrage?
Lastly, should the reporter, who was responsible for filing the story without checking for facts, and the editor, who cleared it without bothering to verify the claim, be hauled up and criminal charges framed against them?

I completely agree. TV9 has been setting new lows every so often! They deliberately spread misinformation to cause panic and to “break” news. And what they have done now is nothing short of a criminal offense. They need to booked and punitive action needs to be taken against the journalist and the editorial team.

These news channels make you take anti-depressants. They magnify the problems (minimum 5x).

This trend of “breaking” news should be curbed. These media people are always in search of “breaking news”. If they don’t find them they inadvertently cultivate one. Take the case of certain remarks made by Antulay. The media was hysterical and tried to outwit each other in nailing “some body”. They behaved like headless chicken. And the old, wily and clever politician had the last laugh. In their bid to outsmart each other the media people completely forgot the crux of the matter.

Two should be implemented immediately:
Revoke the license of TV9 till they agree to apologize for their mistake publicly during prime time, at their own cost, in their own channel and other channels too, for at least a week. In addition, they should be forced to advertise polio drops free of cost for a month at least.
The reporter and editor need to be sacked immediately, without delay.

Actually it our fault to encourage such channels. They knew that such news gets high TRPs and they can do anything for TRPs.
Shutdown TV9 and switch to other news channels.

There must be a law which is against creating this kind of insane activity. people also seem to become violent when they see TV cameras. Everybody shouts and screams,TV reporters not jjust ask what the goernment has done, but they also attribute carelessness and other acts to the officials. Will TV 9 apologise to the pubic? As vinay says, revoke their license

This is pretty much the same thing as what’s happening with Fox News in the US. At least this problem is not unique to India.
I suspect there isn’t any easy solution to the problem of news channels buying TRPs via sensationalism. Perhaps one thing that could’ve worked was some other news channel picking up the story, investigating it and showing the “breaking news” that the the breaking news on TV9 was actually false.

Isn’t this a freedom of press issue? Why revoke license of TV9 when they just published what was a street rumour?
Shouldn’t we all be going against that rumour spreading people instead of the messenger (=TV9)?

There is very little point in berating the TV channels. TV news channels are an anachronism in the internet era. One can learn a ridiculously large amount of info from the internet compared to the fraction one gets from TV. Use TV for live sports, entertainment etc. Don’t waste your time on the news channels.

TV-9 channel thinks that they are no less than NDTV in showing the breaking news, without ascertaining the facts. Just by telecasting such sensational news, they think they become great. Please think before you air any sansational news and be a responsible TV channel of karnataka.

Is this channel run by morons? Who owns it? To be so irresponsible means they must have some serious backers.
Immunization schemes already have much trouble because of religious and ignorant beliefs. To have a tv channel spread this makes the job even harder.
Vijay Pillai, this is not a free press issue. If the channel reports a rumor then the damage is more widespread. Imagine one person saying Vijay Pillai is a murderer and a thief. Now think of a broadcast of this rumor on TV.

probably we should encourage people not to heed to breaking news. Even the rhetoric of Times Now and CNN IBN – the “Get em” posture needs to be sceptically viewed. Funnily 0 i just checked the headlines of all major english news channels at 7 AM today. All had different stories – except the killing of PWD engineer in UP. This shows how skewed up the priorities of News Worthiness of headlines are.

A right person will wonder and also feel bad if he goes through the comments regdng tv9 churimuri. But as a close on looker of this channel and information gatherd from the reliable souces i wud like to share my views.
First of all the news of reported ‘death’ of a child was aired by Suvarna News channel not by tv9 as evryone is blaming. Even i learnt from highly placed souces of tv9 that those peolplel(tv9) waited till 9 pm on sunday. Bfore that people had gone panic and gatherd in front of the Govt. Hospital in Gundlupet of Chamarajnagar dist. D’nt u agree that tv9 channel delebaratly defferd the telecast of heresay, exibeted its social responbility and respetd the ethics of Journalism?
This channel did not encash the panic among the public and dilemma with the state government.
Sometimes, good working people will be punished. this could be applied to tv9 channel also, Because, tv9 has carved a niche in the electronic media in K’taka. This , I ,think has proved costly for the channel itself. Even though the heresay and false news has been aired in Suvarna News, people, who had become panic, came to the conclusion that, this news was disseminated by tv9.
While lodging the cases one should have clear idea about the defaulter. Bu, in this case, one can not understand the State Governments move to lodge 17 cases against tv9 only. Don’t you feel that it shows the selective amnetia on the part of Govt.
Some friends termed tv9 as sinking ship, as its partner Satyam Infotech has been summonned by the World Bank. But, I would like to clariffy that Satyam Infotech has already withdrew its stake in the Associated Broadcasting Company Pvt Ltd., which owns the tv9 Kannada Channel.

TV9 marks the nadir of journalism, especially TV journalism. Sensationalism is its staple food, always thriving on other’s misery. It is no better than some evening rags whose main business if blackmailing, rather than reporting news. It is this kind of sensationalism which marred the reporting of Mumbai carnage. But, sensatinalising a nobel health care mission like pulse polio drops is inhuman. It will take a long time for the public to run the risk of bringing their babies for polio drops at public healthcare centres. The damage done to this impressively successful program is almost permanent. For this crime, there are enough provisions in the IPC to bring TV9 to books and convict.

It is unfortunate that we have such illiterate people such as Sriramulu in-charge of Health Ministry, polio vaccination programs! I even wonder if he knows what polio program is and what kind of problems health workers encounter when they go house to house to identify babies for vaccination.
One nasty rumour is that polio vaccination program is a plan by Western powers to sterilize Muslim community!!
Looking at the way this Sriramulu talks and behaves it appears he already thinks he is the Chief Minister of Karnataka!!
