E.R. RAMACHANDRAN writes: The Sound and Light project at the Mysore Palace is in a work-in-no-progress mode with new problems cropping up even as solutions are discovered for the previous ones.
It is now more a ‘Sound and Heat’ project sometimes careening towards a ‘Sound and Thunder’ project as evident from the heated discussions of the script committees.
A spokesman of the palace, who knows the events of the 550-year history of the Wodeyars by heart and has done as much work as Vikram Sampath’s epic work, is bewildered at the turns and twists the project has taken so far.
Launched on the lines of the son et lumiere show of the Red Fort in Delhi which gives a fantastic audio-visual story of the Mughal Empire, the son et lumiere show for Mysore has been alternately on the boil, on the back burner, and in cold storage with the result a mixture of fetid smell with acrid smoke comes out whenever the audio-visual system is switched on.
On the 5th anniversary of the launch of the project with an end nowhere in sight, the palace spokesman readily agreed to share his despair.
“What do you think of the latest controversy after it was shown to chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa last week?” I asked.
“He didn’t like it. Period. Controversy is the only constant factor of this project. Each chief minister adds his two bits of wisdom. After spending three crore rupees and the budget still ballooning skywards, they are still not sure what the content of the show should be; hence the kite- flying. Writer Lingadevaru Halemane wants mainly Tipu Sultan with a brief reference to the Wodeyars; historian Nanjaraj Urs & Co want the Wodeyar family but do not want Sir M. Visvesvaraya and Sir Mirza Ismail. Looks like the script writers have had more say in the content than the actual events that occurred.”
“What will happen now?”
“The CM wants a newer script that satisfies every whim and fancy. The DC wants to show it to the public and incorporate their feedback into the script. Nobody is clear. Probably it will become something like ‘Nine hours to Rama’ some years ago. If it is a nine-hour show I am afraid we can show only two shows in a day. We may have to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to the visitors. Some of them may even demand bedding too. The Palace doesn’t have that kind of money you know….”
“If it comes to that, you can outsource three-tier berths from the Indian Railways. I am sure rail mantri Laloo Prasadji will help. He will be happy to supply food and Rail ‘Pani’ drinking water from Railway canteen if it can help him double his profit. By the way, who will direct such a long script?” I asked.
“Only Ramanand Sagar or B.R. Chopra with their experience of Ramayana and Mahabharatha could have attempted this. But both are now dead and gone. Sir Richard Attenborough would have been ideal but he is not well.”
“How about T.N. Seetharam? After Mayamruga and Muktha I can’t think of any other director in Kannada who can hold the attention.”
“It is a good idea. But there is a danger of the show becoming a mega-serial and may drag on for two tor three years. He might add some court scenes too which I doubt if the script will permit. But if he insists there is no other option.”
“Where will it all lead to? Do you see an end for this project?” I asked him before taking his leave.
He looked as if he spotted a rainbow as he looked up the sky and said, “If Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar becomes the director there is hope yet as nobody knows his family better. There is a good chance of that happening as he is likely to join BJP soon.”
Finally, it looked like a QED.

It is a good idea, after all both the Mysore and Bangalore Palace are embroiled in many years of never ending court battles ! In between you have Dhobi Ghat, Dodda kere maidan, seetha Vilas Chatra cases to add some spice ! A Mega Soap Serial shown only in front of the Palace ! Muktha Muktha Muktha !

It is absolutely sick to see the attitude of Mr Wadiyar and those so-called historians. What is there tocreate such a big hue and cry abt? Tipu Sultan, Haidar Ali, Sir M.V., Sir Mirza, and all the Wadiyars were a part of the history and why shud nayone be blacked out? mr Wadiyar, mr. Nanjaraja Urs and others just follow a dog -in- manger policy–we dont do anything ourselves to promote Mysore and we will ENSURE no one else does anything also…and then also whine and cry that no one gives due importance to Mysore/Wadiyar family. Have they done anything substantial to put Mysore story on national map?! Shameful creatures!

Mysore Palace is said to have more visitors in a year then Taj ! It was built by Krishna Raja Wadiyar IV . It was illuminated during his time. You do not need a filmy story directed and produced by an unknown son of Film star Jaynathi to show case the Palace or put on a national map ! 99 % of the Tourists visit Palace during the day ! Phrases like Shameful creatures are disgraceful. If the state wants to tell the story of Tipu and Haider they can go to Daria daulat , why unnecessarily make issues with Mr. Wadiyar that too when the Palace is till under litigation.

Of course i know that Mysore palace has had as many visitors as the Taj and those statistics. But ask those very visitors how educated they have come out of the palace abt Mysore’s glorious history? None of the exhibits inside have any details or historical information. In the midst of this if some attempt is being made to educate the vistors and tourists what is wrong? Just because some “actress’s unknown son” (i dont know if some disparaging statemtns from u are any less disgraceful) is doing something it doesnt mean these self-styled custodians of Mysore heritage can browbeat them. Apart from parading bikini clad women on ramp stage, has Mr Wadiyar done anything concrete for his family heritage? Come on face the truth! And Mysore here doesnt mean just the town of Mysore–it means the STATE of Mysore and Haidar and Tipu were as much a part of it as the Wadiyars. So stop this bull abt going to Dariya Daulat.

What Mr. Wadiyar does is his personal business ! May be you were not invited to one of them. Unlike Mallya’s bikini clad glamor dolls in calenders, Wadiyar is atleast promoting Mysore Silk ! Just keeping the family tradition during Dasara is not an easy joke and does not come cheap. Feeding half a dozen elephants defies economic sense.
What is disparaging about my comments on the producer. Even BSY after seeing the preview has said about the poor quality of the experiment.
For the record Haider and Tipu ruled from Srirangapatna . Daria Daulat is the only extant palace of that era. Mysore Palace and fort were destroyed by Tipu and there is no cock and bull about it. Legally speaking Mysore Palace is a disputed property and the matter is sub-judice .

If Haidar and Tipu ruled from Srirangapatna…so did all the Wadiyars from the times of Raja Wadiyar in 1610 when Vijayanagara viceroy gave him th throne to Immadi Krishnarja Wodeyar till he was deposed by Haidar in 1761. So why waste time talking abt them? We can begin Mysore history from 1799 and Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar as the founder of the dynasty til 1947 when JCW submitted to the Union.
Also on the part of so-called historians like PVN etc that Sir M Vishweshwaraiah doesnt deserve a mention is utter nonsense.
I have no intention to attend fashion shows. May be u r interested and i dont care abt that. Dont make it a personal issue. I neither know u or nor care for ur likes and dislikes. so stick to the topic. And Mysore silk hardly needs Mr Wadiyar’s gracious patronage. It is a brand in itself and the STate Govt does enough to promote it. All this man does is design some gawdy, unaesthetic sarees in the name of ‘Royal house of Mysore’.
What was disparaging in ur comments was the insinuiation of some :”unknown:” producer somwehere–why cant an unknown person take an initiative to do smthing for mysore history when all the well-known people have sat shut for 50 years? I am not commenting on the quality of the film, thats another issue. But to dismiss smone cos of their anonymity shows rank servility to celebrity status.
If Mr Wadiyar really cares for his family heritage, first thing he must do is publish those masterpiece Kritis of his late father –94 in number and popularize them, rather than charge anyone who approaches him for it with Rs 1 Lakh per Kriti. Duh! So much for family heritage./.–after trying to sell lotteries in Thailand and failing in THAT TOOOOO !!!

I have to accede you seem to know SDNRW’s personal affairs more than what is in public domain. Being away from Mysore, i cannot fan so much animosity on him as you do!
Mysore Palace is a private property including the portion where the City Bus stand is currently located. There is nothing unusual about it as all the Maharaja’s and Nawab’s in India got their ancestral rights protected by agreements with the dominion of India just before India became a Republic. But after the death of JCW, during Emergency the then CM took over the Palace thro’ an executive order. So much so State appropriated all the income derived from the property including the rent from KSRTC and Horticulture department for the portion they are utilizing. Yet, SDNRW was left to pay the Wealth and Income Tax on this property as he continued to be the owner, as the state had not acquired it in accordance with law. This was challenged by your Mysore Scion and the Karnataka HC agreed with him and issued a writ of mandamus to the state to handovdisobeyed the HC order and er the property. Even the SC refused to hear the State’s plea. State enacted Mysore Palace ( Acquisition & Palace ) Act 1998 ( for details read http://www.mysorepalace.in/act.doc), to thwart the three decade long legal effort of SDNRW . This is still before the High Court with a status quo order. It is understood HC is awaiting the result of Bangalore Palace ( Acquisition & Transfer) Act 1996, which is pending before the SC.
So the reason for my view emanates from this factual position. It is not only against the status quo order but in case SDNRW were to succeed in the near future, he has every right to discontinue the show and show what ever that pleases him. I feel it is morally abhorring for some one to squat in ones property for over 30 years and try and expropriate a citizens’ property in the name of Heritage against the solemn promises made.
Just the other day in a News story (http://www.dc-epaper.com/DC/DCB/2009/01/20/ArticleHtmls/20_01_2009_006_009.shtml?Mode=0), it was said that the Wodeyar kings don’t find a place in the sound and light show of the Union ministry of information and broadcasting, which traces the history of Kanataka called Karnataka Vaibhava. It is said that the show was shown on January 22 as part of the seven-day Suttur Jathra Mahotsava.
So SDNRW cannot do much about it, just the way he could do precious little when Sanjay Khan made a TV serial according to his view point.
So it is in the light of this, i said you can go to Lalita Mahal or Daria Daulat or even the Old Bangalore Palace within the fort and do what you like and vilify and glorify whomever you like if the law of the land allows it as within the artistic domain and not per se defamatory.
What Prof. PVN says is his opinion. It should be viewed in the same perspective as when you say Tipu made the Rockets, thought it was there in use in Mysore much earlier and its unknown maker is buried in the sands of time.
I am not privy to SDNRW charging for JCW Kritis. AIR has been broadcasting JCW Krutis ever since they were brought to public domain. Very recently AIR had broadcast all 94 krutis. Dr. Sukanya Prabhakar has produced quite a few CD’s and i am given to understand even recently 3 more unknown Krutis were brought to light in a CD form by a member of the family. I do not think any one of them has paid for it. If JCW who has published so many classics in Kannada could not publish his own krutis , probably that is the way he wanted them to be. May be the son knows more than what i and you know about it. May be the son does not even possess the original manuscripts. Any way , if you search at forums like forumhub, rasikas, groups.yahoo.com/group/ambaa, one can find almost all information one want on these krutis. Any way i cannot speculate much on a copyrighted matter based on mere allegation which looks far fetched.
