Underworld don turned language warrior turned social worker Muthappa Rai takes a small step toward his much-anticipated arangetram in the political cesspool of Karnataka, with the launch of a website of his organisation Jaya Karnataka in Bangalore on Tuesday.
Jaya Karnataka, if you have missed previous episodes, is an apolitical “socially-oriented and welfare-driven organisation to uphold and preserve Kannada culture and tradition, and reach out to the underprivileged sections of society, especially the differently-abled throughout the state.”
Amen.

Heard about Abdul Latif, the dreaded underworld gang leader of Gujarat? He made Guiness book of World record by winning from 9 Ahmedabad Corporation seats simulteneously. In late 1980s.
One underworld hero from north India started an ambitious project- he funded people to bring last remains of Prithviraj Chouhan from Ghazni to India.
Psychologically, after certain achievemnts, underworld starts thinking they are helping society. They are also hero to a section of people as well. So, nothing new what Muthappa Rai is doing now.
Good luck:)-

@Narayana, Tathagatha: Very nice. Your comments brought a smile to my lips. :-)
Perhaps the only silver lining on the cloud is that Indian politics is filled with examples of people with lots of money trying to succeed and failing. (Vijay Mallya and that Tamilian actor come to mind)

Now I will have to think twice before I say ‘Jai Karnataka’, without sounding like a Rai supporter

BJP has its ram sene, bajrang dal, VHP etc. for criminal activities. Cong just contracts it to whichever criminal outfit it finds fit and if there is none they create one.
Now it goes the other way. ‘self-made’ people entering politics.
What is wrong with this? When Indian people (sheep?) want it this way, what harm can another party joining the fray do?

We seem to be well on the way to becoming another Bihar or UP. We now have our own Mohammed Shahabuddin and Atiq Khans in the form of Muttappa Rai to intimidate voters and soft bellied politicians.

Very much agree with nagarajarao@tarikere.
We have seen all the political parties for the past 60 years most places (even cities like Bengaluru) does not have proper “bipasa”(its bijili, pani, sadak). I have been voting for the past 2 times(though I feel nobody is worth my vote) and I do not see the basic necessities taken care off. I am lesser mortal and would like to have decent standard of living in my lifetime. So what do you think is an Answer? Atleast there is somebody who wants to solve issues whats wrong in trying them out.
Coming to learning culture, now every T,D,H is talking and interpreting it in his own way. Here they are trying to be transparent atleast.

smells fishy,
The website idea sounds good to reach techies and it must have been designed still better.
In recent times every of such moment are jst a platform to get the support at time of election. For instance rally by person mostly discussed in congress did AHIND, Daredra Narayana . These are politician but what is difference with these with rai (upcoming politician).
Thinking abt the source of money ,getting the help from political parties will surely make such groups and moments politicize .
This is another such leaf of in row.

I sincerely hope that the view of nagarajarao@tarikere and AnotherOne are not, in any manner, representative of the public view. Their views sound too fatalistic. Merely because a gangster comes out from the cold speaking for kannada and wants to don the do-gooder role, you want to place him at the helm of the State’s affairs! You would be opening the flood gates for other gangsters to avail this new route for controlling the Government machinery, treasury, law and order. Once a gangster is always a gangster. He cannot have anything but selfish motive. You might as well subcontract the running of the Government to the D company.
