BJP’s got the opportunity to replace its present set of candidates with more dynamic ones.
About Vishwanath winning, first it was playing with the name and next was the miraculous deletion of voters.
For me, his winning is as mysterious as Dubya’s in Florida.
For every 10 Vishwanaths winning there is a Janardhana Swamy, a true face saver of democracy.

I think this is a good election result. LK Advani and BJP needed to be told they should return back to centrist politics of Vajpayee, who even at adversity would be the first person to come in support of policies that were in National interest. BJP opposing Nuclear deal was a big disappointment to many of us traditional BJP voters.
Add to that their support and defense of uncouth, rabid dogs who would talk (and act in some cases) of Hodi Maga – Kadi Maga Politics!
If they move back to vajpayee kind of moderation, they’ll see people like me voting to them as INstinctively we like BJP economic and social policies better.

Its really funny to see you political analysts reading the minds of voters and explaining why voters voted who they voted (see poll analysis in cnn ibn to know just how intelligent is indian voter!).
Give me a break. Do you honestly think even a small proportion of voters really give a eff about any of these? Hell no. They just go and vote for the heck of it; majority in this country are just plain effin stupid. Never hope its going to get better. This country is finished; it never had a hope, neither a decent choice. I will congratulate those who stayed away from all these bullcrap and not voted. Talking about sour grapes…. 19 of your questions are actually different and convulated ways of asking the simple question –
has the Indian voter rejected the BJP ?
Well, you know the answer, do some soul searching :)
Reg the last question, i guess its technically wrong, what is the percentage of Indian voters found online ? The people who should have mattered to the BJP cannot be found on the Internet, those that can be found are already rooting for the party while some may actually be NRIs (my guess is that the person making the last comment is 1 of them :p )

Let us realise some bare facts. First there is a democratic frame work and the elections were conducted under it. Whether it is the democratic attitude is beside the point and let us accept gracefully the wish of the people.. Secondly we must remember we were under British rule and mere 62 years will not wipe out the servile attitude and hence dynastic rule will continue and after Rahul Gandhi it will devolve on Priyanka Gandhi’s children. At least India must be happy that Praksh Karat has met his Waterloo and taken the wind out of that windbag in Bihar. Prakash along with Yechuri were literally basking under the glare of publicity and hopefully they will not look upto China for guidance. By next elections hopefully they will be wiped out. Also it appears this is the beginning of the demise of regional parties and emerging of two party system.

I think: 1) Manmohan Singh has changed the image of India’s prime minister –from a politicking animal, to the leader of the executive.
2) Sonia Gandhi has changed the image of the Gandhi family –from a power-hungry dynasty to a responsible democratic party.
3) Varun Gandhi has helped himself by hook or crook, but by the same actions done a disservice to BJP. (Locals in Pilibhit may have reacted in one way, the nation reacted in another way to the most vicious campaigner of BJP)
4)Looks like people have understood market economics and inflationary cycles better than they would have in earlier years! (Of course, NREGA and other populist measures may have helped them turn a blind eye)
5) Rahul will continue to do what he has proved himself good at. Party-building. (Wow, look at the UP mandate!)
6) BJP and Left will go for a MAJOR makeover in coming years. The next elections may see a challenging, issue-driven fight marked with fresh blood, new public faces and more grassroots efforts.
7) Leave alone people, Advani himself does not believe in the TV debate theory anymore. Hours after the news of UPA victory, he is yet to make an appearance, congratulate Congress openly. Jaitley did claim a phone call had been made…
8) One Mr P Chidambaram will be frequenting Shivaganga more often this time round. 300 vote lead means the ALARM is ringing.

Early to draw too many conclusions but here goes (not in order of the above questions):
1. Narendra Modi is not a national leader… and may have even cost the BJP some seats in certain areas.
2. Mayawati, lalu and Paswan have badly miscalculated and are paying the price.
3. Naveen Patnaik made a brilliant move by dumping the BJP at the last possible minute. It was a gamble, and could have gone against him, but I guess he knew his constituents better than the rest of us.
4. Chandrababu Naidu was hurt by Chiranjeevi’s party in a few seats, but must now realize that there is no point in trying to fragment the anti-Congress votes in AP and tie up with the TRS and the BJP in the future.. if nothing else, to regain Telengana.
5. There were no “national” issues, like the last time around, but a shuffling around of seats based on local re-alignments.
5.1 The Left frittered away their good performance through rank stupidity and lost Kerala and WB to Congress/TC.
5.2 Sheila Dikshit has made Delhi the Congress Qila thanks to good performance
5.3 BJP badly messed up in Rajasthan. No small part of that blame goes to Vasundhara Raje and her coterie.
6. Rahul Gandhi’s small, but significant UP effort is not to be sniffed at… yet. All depends on whether they can take it forward and challenge SP/BSP at the next assembly elections.
7. LK Advani must quit and let the second rung sort it out in the BJP. He is delaying the inevitable, and possibly making it worse for the BJP.
8. Indian “psephologists” and the media still suck at predicting the results of a national poll…

What I see in this election and the previous elections is the weak “Hindu” who fear Muslims consolidate behind BJP and the “Strong Hindu” who don’t give a damn about Anti-Muslim propaganda, “free” from Muslim fear select its leader with Choice and confidence.
This is the pattern in fear gripped states of Gujrat, karnataka, MP, Western UP ( refer the movement “Hindu girls need to be protected from charm of Muslims”) compared to confident states like AP, Delhi, TN, Eastern & Central UP, Bihar.
The summary is Where ever BJP instills the fear of Muslims it will do Well, this includes the selling of Appeasment, Pseudo-secular and victimhood of thousand year jihad.
The confident and young India, I think is getting out of self pity, fear sychosis and victimhood politics. It will augur only good for India, except my state.

We certainly need BJP to continue to be strong and represent Hindu interests (though not in terms of supporting goons and hooligans). BJP and Congress will act as a balance on our polity, both are essential for the vibrancy of our democracy.

India and Indians (read Hindus) have been ruled by outsiders for more than 700 years now. 400 years by Muslims and another 300 years by Britishers (read Christians). Another 50 years by Congress.
And above all, they (Indians/Hindus) are divided among themselves with lots of castes and sucastes. Indians (again read Hindus) now have that slavery in their blood; and therefore cannot think ruling their country themselves. It takes another 100 or more years to come out of the slavery mindedness; but by then their population would have become minority among minorities.

All exit polls showed BJP doing much better than it actually did. The give the BJP up to 150, when it got a poor 116.

Gowramma: “kenne myaake guli beeltade. aadre adyeno heltavne artha aagakilla”
Kamalamma: “nin votu yarge? yaav party? asta na?”
Gowramma: “illa sumkiru. kamaladoru vote ge 500 rupayi kodtaarante kanri”
This conversation probably replicated itself in every constituency in the country. If the BJP didn’t pay cash, the UPA ensured it was done through the government machinery by implementing the NREGS. Everybody likes free money. Villagers like free water, power and Rs.8 per year of kandaaya on an acre of land (if at all collected). City dwellers like Rs.10000 annual fees for an engineering course for their hudugas and hudugis. Whose father’s what knot goes?
Note: All characters and conversations are purely from the fevered mind of the writer, who unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to sell his vote for Rs.500, or any other amount

The electorate has understood it, and it is important for the BJP to understand it sooner then later, or it will be totally routed, like the LTTE.

It is difficult to understand how purportedly intelligent folks can get carried away by charm offensives. This speaks to the quality of the manipulated rather than the manipulators.
This debate is still young. goku’s link is a pointer. We all know the UPA does not have any long term strategy to deal with resurgent threats on our borders as well those internally. There is no point claiming the BJP lacked one too. Being wedded to secularism as the UPA, the BJP cannot be any better. That’s a simple fact. The point is that the BJP carries within itself seeds of common sense that manifested itself often and it would need but to tap. The UPA has killed itself of all such seeds. The full force of the charm offensive will be turned against the Hindus on Rahul’s ascension.

Palahalli:
I don’t believe India has a Majority community. We have many minorities (even within what we call Hindu community). But, the most visible minority is the Muslim community and there is a belief that they vote enmass (right or wrong).
Eying that vote many parties (including congress) play into some vested interests within Muslim community (Which is why we see the appeasement policy, which in reality doesn’t benefit Muslims either).
Having a right-of-center BJP helps by keeping in check such instincts of congress. I still remember how some Congress leaders thwarted the punishment of a Muslim youth (more than a decade ago), who raped and killed a Brahmin girl (Soumya) in Puttur. That guy escaped without punishment. Congress hasn’t been able to win western Dakshina Kannada till date (including this election). It may take another generation for people there to think of Congress differently (if at all it behaved differently in future). Having Janardhana Poojari as a candidate didn’t help it either, he had used derisive language against Pejawar Mutt seer a decade back, and he is a well respected head of Udupi mutt.
So – that answers your question: Though Mangalore city and Mangalore South voted against BJP (The goons certainly helped consolidation of Muslim/Christian votes), people in larger Dakshina Kannada have enough bitterness of the stupid Muslim Appeasement by Congress even today.
I believe BJP had better balance (towards centrist approach) even during the Babri Demolition than in recent times. I feel Vajpayee was successful in bringing that balance. Even people who claimed him to be a Mukhota were thrown out. They haven’t managed a leader with same temperament. :-(
I feel leaders like Sushma, Jaitley (even Ananth kumar) can bring in good level of maturity & Balance into their discourse, as versus the Rajnath, MM Joshi or Varun Gandhi. If they can bring back a balance, we’ll see more Hindus as well as some other minorities will come back to BJP fold with confidence.

Friendsville and Boastful,
BJP lost because it was percieved to be a geriatrics party! Simple. Also, OddVani AKA CodVani AKA DodgeVani was a consummate dishonest politician. Just because he saw a chance that he could come to power eight months early the ass**** was willing to torpedo the Nuclear Deal when all BJP had to do was to reach out to UPA saying “We started the Nuclear Deal; we help you to finish it.” Instead DodgeVani sought to undo everything Vajapayee achieved with NDA! The voters could see through Dodger’s machinations…

Only a brain dead person, can accept that Rahul and Priyanka are charming and vote for the Congress on that basis. Khan fits the bill here.
If charm were to be consideration all the bollywood bimbos would contest and win elections hands down.
It needs a special person like Khan to denigrate MM Joshi, who is a Phd in Physics, and compare him with high school drop outs like Rahul and Priyanka, who have not achieved anything on their own except inheriting the bogus Gandhi family name. This khan character cannot digest even MM Joshi sitting in as the opposition leader, and lectures ad nauseam about tolerance towards minorities. Talk about AL-TAQIYA :)

harkol – No country has a majority “community”. Not just India. All countries have a National community/society. Then they have minorities.
What you call Hindu “community” and I call Nation, is not some theoretical fantasy. It exists. The diversified nature of Sanatana Dharma gives ignorant people the impression that each part is a separate and distinct culture without any connexion with one another. Not just this, all through history the Hindu nation has acted and reacted differently from other Nations that constitute this country. There is nothing strange in this.
To think of the Hindus as a bunch of minorities is a travesty of fact devoid of any historical sense. It is also in line with the basic thrust of secularism in that so long as the Hindus are denied a sense of nationhood and are made to feel of themselves as just another “community(ies)” of whatever size, the minorities in India can lay equal claim to India. Because they are just another minority like the Hindu(s).
Here I am not talking of a territorial nationality, but speaking to the content and experience of a collective body of people who form the Nation.
India will cease to be the national home of the Hindu only when the Hindu dissociates himself from any sense of it’s national history and culture. The fact that many “Hindus” fall in this category does not mean the non-existence of the Hindu Nation, but of the cessation of these individuals.
I will say this that the Muslims also constitute a nation in themselves. Jinnah was correct after all.
You mention the fact that action was not taken against the molester of a Brahmin girl. That’s true, but would any action have been taken if the girl was a Gowda? Think in essense.
I think you are getting confused on your basics.
Let me ask you this – Does harkol have a nationality? Does he belong to a Nation? If yes, what Nation is that? What are the constitutes of his Nation?
Please keep in mind the distinction between Nationality and Citizenship.

Again the same frothing in the mouth by the Yeddi’s cheddis, without reading that I had written “so-called” charm. If I hate BJP because of its divisive and exclusion politics, does not mean I support the Congress. But for the Cheddis “its either with us or against us” But then again the feared, insecure person suspect everything, which is what these cheddis are.

If Rahul has led Congress to victory, so be it. Why are you guys so much against it. Dont dis-respect the electorate, more so when there is a consistent wave across the nation.

Pala: I never question the existence of a Indian Nation. And I belong to Indian nation, not because I am a Hindu, but because I feel I, along with my family & friends, I belong here. I am acclimatised to this place and feel most safe here. So, To put it crudely – I feel like a group of dogs who have marked their territory, and will fight to death to guard it. :-)
I am painfully aware of difference between Citizenship and Nationality, with close friends and Family taken up US citizenship, and never feeling a belonging to that country!!
But still, I also believe our nation is larger than just a singular belief system – Which in Indian case I define as a broad system rooted in a belief in reincarnation & Moksha(or nirvana). All various classical India born belief systems are offshoots of this primary belief. From that perspective you can club Vedic, Dvaita/Advaita, Jain,Budhist, Sikh etc. religions into a single Hindu (as in Indian) system.
But, that’s in theological domain, what that’s got to do with politics?
Oh, there was another point I forgot to mention about BJP. BJP is known as a trader’s party, because though it talks of Swadeshi, its instincts are more tuned towards Business and enterprise, unlike Congress.
I feel all these various belief systems of India (along with imported systems like Islam/Christianity or Judaism) are minorities in a political sense. Only some of them are recognised as minorities (like Muslims, cristians, Sikhs, Jains etc.). But, In each state a sub-section of people act as majority, rest being minorities. But on the nation as a whole there isn’t a overwhelming majority of any particular group (unlike in most other countries, which have overwhelming Christian-white or Muslim-Arab majorities). For example – In Punjab, are sikhs really a minority or do they really need protection against discrimination?
For example – I am a Brahmin by birth (though not by thought or act). But, in India Brahmin vote rarely counts, and that is why this country can get away with a form of reverse discrimination(Reservations) for far longer than actually needed. In Tamilnadu, when castes which are called Backward can dominate politics and economy, the Minority of Brahmins have been suffering. So, Don’t you think Brahmin’s (though part of a larger Hindu faith) are a minority, who are discriminated against?
I too think that Jinnah was right. It is far better not to be in a country, if you don’t feel you belong there, instead of being there and asking for separate electorate. Better to try and mark a new territory where you feel safe. From that perspective perhaps, Pakistan was indeed a different nation. Any person who doesn’t feel he belongs in here, perhaps is not an Indian, which is why I believe Kashmiri seperatists perhaps are not Indians.
But, what does religion have to do with being a political minority?
Interesting question about the girl being a Gowda – you may be right there in pointing out that the situation would’ve been the same. But, if you are saying that just because Police treat a Gowda and a Brahmin the same when it comes to a criminal case, but a Muslim differently, that’s a wrong point. The point is some congress leaders treated Muslims differently, which is unfair and they are eating just desserts.
Also, I forgot to mention other reason why I feel a right-of-center BJP is very essential. In general BJP is far more Liberal, Business and Entrepreneurship, Growth and development oriented than Congress. And most importantly – BJP is the only credible alternative to congress in India and it is very important for India that BJP remains strong, to make sure we don’t have a situation like in 1975, when our democracy was almost finished by congress.

Branding my writings as “divisive” without basis does not make them divisive. It makes you a propagandist. If you want to discuss why I say what I say, then let’s do that.
