When the mountains spoke silently down below

15 years before she practised peetha dhyanam with Paramahamsa Nithyananda on the small screen three nights ago, the Tamil actress Ranjeetha starred with Arjun Sarja on the big one in what S.P. Balasubramanyam calls one of the greatest songs he has ever recorded.

The movie was Karna, the composer was the brilliant Vidyasagar.

Vidyasagar says he had already recorded S. Janaki‘s portion of the song. SPB, who had been recording all day (this being 1995) turned up at the studio, only to say he he would record his bit the following day. Vidyasagar asked SPB to listen to what Janaki had rendered before he left. Floored by the lyrics and the melody, SPB recorded it despite the fatigue.
