Plaza Talkies being demolished for the Namma Metro project on M.G. Road in Bangalore on Monday. A metro terminal is slated to come up where the theatre now stands. Barely.

As a kid, remember a rat jumping out from behind a seat while watching ‘Genghis Khan’ at plaza. Realized that every time there was loud clanging music, the rat would be disturbed from their normal activities. Sad to see the theater go.

during the last couple of years, Metro and BBMP have achieved something that cannot be repeated by any…together they have destroyed Bangalore’s charm while few politicians, contractors, BBMP officials have benefitted from this…trees, monuments, public spaces, et al have been destroyed and lost forever

Plaza is a memory now. Our uncle took us there for Jugle Safari. We reached an hour before and stood in a long queue. The hall was fully packed. Though that was the only film I saw there, I can’t forget watching it.

MG road, which was known for its movie theaters has become just another shopping/office block now. It’d have been better if the Metro ran underground in this area, and allowed the old MG road to remain as it is.
But then – change is the only constant in life… :-(

In its last days it was a theatre for S&M fans and English movie fans (two demographics with a surprisingly large overlap in Bengaluru).
If you wanted to watch the latest English movies in Bengaluru (pre-multiplex) Plaza was generally the place.
If you wanted stinky toilets, rats, poor sound, creaky seats, broken cushions and a perennial feeling of sitting on the edge of a cliff (esp if you were sitting in the balcony) then Plaza was also the place.
No parking, zero facilities, shit lighting and awful amenities… no wonder it closed.
Thank God for multiplexes.

I remember seeing ‘The Ten Commandments’ and few other old popular movies at the Plaza. It was a wonder how we managed to sit though the smells and the rats for hours and yet enjoy the movie. I wish they could build a smaller and cleaner movie-plex above the new metro station.

The only good thing about multiplexes is easy ticketing.
Popcorns at Rs.60/- Tickets above Rs.200. They don’t have the character of individual cinema we used to have (ofcourse, now almost all theaters have gone bad, as their incentive for keeping them alive is almost nil).
Perhaps it’s just my age, but I used to watch 2 movies a week, and now it has come down to perhaps two movies in a year.

Even if we call for a global tender and give contract to an agency to destroy Bangalore they will not destroy it so well the way our corrupt poilticians, greedy contractors, and autocratic BBMP are doing.
Tagore Circle underpass is going on despite strong public protest, I believe that there is a proposal to widen the road starting from Halli tindi hotel on Bull temple road right upto Vidyapeeta circle.
