Just when and how (and why) a pokey little hole-in-the-wall restaurant became a must-stop-shop on the photo-op route is unknown. But Vidyarthi Bhavan in Gandhi Bazaar holds the title with aplomb. From former vidyarthis with point-and-shoot cameras to serving chief ministers with professional cameramen in tow, everybody troops to the hoary 64-year-old vegetarian joint when in need of good Basavanagudi oxygen.
On Sunday, it was the turn of the beleaguered Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yediyurappa to do the honours to a plate of chow-chow baath to the pop of the flash bulbs, with son and parliamentarian B.Y. Raghavendra Vijayendra (extreme right) in tow.

it is vijayendra and not raghavendra
All of our chief ministers, including Nijalingappa, have been scoundrels, but Yediyurappa is the worst “gushdu” of them all. Always at the wrong place, wrong time, saying the wrong thing, and doing the wrong thing. His millions and minions cannot save him from gaucherie. Puttaswamy is a perfect fit in the situation.
That is not Raghavendra. Its Vijayendra. yadiyurappa’s another son
@pulikesi,
Why r u mixing politics here. It is a routine thing that a beggar to a raja does to survive, have food.
The fact is that a CM savors the taste at a well known and tasty restaurant which needs to be commented. I am sure as a vidhyarthi, our CM might have visited that place quite often. He is just nostalgic.
VB is the pride of Basavangudi and everybody who have stayed in and around that Gandhi Bazaar will vouch for it. I have relished it’s taste countless times and will visit now as soon as I finish this post.
We bring in politics in whatever we do and at times we have to respect the leader irrespective of whichever the party affiliations, at least in the areas outside politics. They do get a mouthful there even if they are good.
Your comment is wrong side of a right place at the right forum.
Grow up…
Hail Ashok for his sane rebuff
So which of Yeddi’s Sons is an MP ?
Transliteration nitpick.
It is “bhaath” since there’s a mahAprANa in there. Not that it matters of course.
Truth can’t be hidden so easily. Watch the rookie MP who have never ever spoken in the Parliment so far, lay his super expensive Vertu mobile phone next to the chow-chow baath!
And the CM’s expression indicates he missing his favorite Halappa too.
Congratulations Yeddy & Reddy brothers!!
Reddy bhandhugale, now that you have got a favorable verdict from the apex court, Churumuri’s khap panchayat should cease & desist from passing on judgments. BTW, I have also heard that MP who is supporting asli khap panchayats is buying Brahmini steels.
I was somewhat disappointed to see the picture of Vidyarthi Bhavan. The table is clean, the walls and doors appear recently painted. No! That is not the Vidyarthi Bhavan I knew!
I was a regular between 1963 and 1964 during which period suddenly dose prices were increased from 25 paise to 30 paise. The concept of limited chutnry made its appearance. We grumbled and yet patronized the place. Sorry, I lied. Vidyarthi Bhavan patronized us, the poor mortals in search of the dose-nirvana.
I agree. It is not fair to begrudge Yeddi from seeking the same mortal pleasures.
I have seen the entire Hyderbad team led by Jaisimha invade the place in 1964 after a scandalously losing to Mysore in just two days, just so that Madras did not make it to the top of South Zone Ranji league! That prompted the CCI to change the rules on premature declarations to fix a match.
Finally, they a had an outdated calendar on the wall, way way back in the restaurant that could prove a great inspiration to the politicians. It depicted a chariot that had for riders Rajendra Prasad, Vallabhabhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu, and Rajaji, among others. The sarathi was Jawawaharlal Nehru. The chariot was drawn by three lions. Beaming from the sky was Mahatma Gandhiji with a halo around him.
May be Yediyurappa can consider donating a new version of the calendar to that place.

Gokulam–
The story of the mahapraana element in our speech is a strange one, as strange as Mukhyaprana’s life. It sneaks into asali kannada words where it has no business being, as in “ombhatthu.” It makes for unnecessary trouble when it comes to spelling certain words in kannada. Surely you have noticed that newspaper articles play it safe by slitting the navel of any letter when the writer is in doubt. When in doubt, aspirate.
I hold with shankarabatta that we should say good by to this samskritha imposition.
In kannada, it is “baathu.”

We are not likely to confuse it with waterfowl.

The man seems to be trying to shrink into himself. This despite the meal being a complimentary one or about to be paid by the taxpayer.
Pulikeshi, all good points, but irrelevant. “bhaath” is from Marathi, at least as used in Kannada. There is no asali Kannada here since it isn’t Khannada at all.
