With journalistic integrity, both individual and institutional, increasingly under question with the spurt of paid news, private treaties, mediating, brokering and other wheeling and dealing, there have been growing calls for journalists to also declare their assets and liabilities, much like politicians, judges and bureaucrats.
Ravi Belagere (in picture), the colourful and sometimes controversial editor of the Kannada tabloid Hi Bangalore!—whose ad-free menu is a heady cocktail of crime, cinema, sleaze, politics and literature—has been doing just that on the pages of his paper for years now.
Every September, the popular and prolific Belagere, who also writes and publishes books, hosts television shows, acts in movies, and runs a school on top of his journalistic duties, publishes not so much a list but a confessional of what he holds and what he owes.
This is Belagere’s deeply personal “P&L statement” for the year gone by (translated from the original Kannada), published in the October 7 issue of Hi Bangalore!.
If nothing else, it offers a start.

“It is account-giving time once again.
“For someone who rode to Bangalore on his motorcycle with Rs 380 in his pocket, if I am anything today, it is because of Hi Bangalore!. For 15 years, I have been a humble servant of you, my reader, and it is my duty to present my accounts before you, my master.
“Except for two buses which I purchased for Prarthana School, I did not obtain any moveable assets this year. For my personal use, I have a Skoda and Volkswagen, with the Skoda being put to greater use. But, as you are aware, in the second-half of the last year, my movements were restricted [due to an illness].
“There is a Maruti Omni in the garage for the use of the office staff. The Ind-Suzuki and Bullet motorcycles that are so dear to me, continue to remain parked there.
“I did not buy any new clothes either but I did buy books as if they were going out of fashion.
“I purchased a house-site in ‘Karishma Hills’ on the outskirts of Bangalore in the name of [third son] Karna and work on a new house has begun. I have bequeathed my Padmanabhnagar house, Amma, and a flat to my daughter Bhavana. The other house in Seshadripuram is already with my other daughter Chetana. At the moment, my wife Lalitha, mother-in-law, children, grandchildren, me and the dog stay in our Banashankari house, Ammi Jaan.
“Last year, I had purchased a house that [woman Friday] Nivedita had bought and donated it to Seena (nick name of Srinivas), who has been with me and been my shadow for nearly 30 years.
“As for my office, my friends keep teasing me, ‘This is your Brindavana’. In Brahmin patois, Brindavana means final resting place. This office is my own.
“I have only one bank account, at Karnataka Bank, and have debts of nearly Rs 4 crore.
“Last year, I paid income-tax of Rs 54,44,450.
“Both the newspaper and the publishing house are in the black. The monthly employee costs of Hi Bangalore! is about Rs 4,20,000, and Nivedita is the highest-paid employee.
“There are 349 employees in Prarthana School which has 5,900 students. Their annual wage bill is Rs 2,00,82,000. Prarthana has four buildings of its own, and a small playground. Besides, I have rented two rooms. This year, too, principal Sheela was honoured by the government for the 100% pass-rate in SSLC.
“As you are aware, I devote a portion of my profits for poor students and the sick and ailing. Several children, all the way up to engineering and medical students, are availing the scholarship instituted in the name of my friend ‘Sitanadi‘ Surendra. The good news this year is that one of the girls is appearing for the IAS. Tens of heart and kidney patients, cancer victims, HIV-afflicted are benefitting from the donations.
“All the money for these ventures comes from you, the reader. My task is merely to distribute it.
“This year, thanks to my laziness, I did not write a single book. The publication of O Manase suffered hiccups for the same reason.
“From the moment Hi Bangalore! was born, my friend R.T. Vittal Murthy has been with me through thick and thin. He is my biggest asset.

Did the income that RB declared include all those ‘CASH’ payments RB and his cronies collect by blackmailing politicians, govt officials, rowdies and builders?
RB saying ‘Im Good’ is like Muttapp Rai saying ‘I’m a Saint’.
Also, before I forget, did he declare the fees and the gifts he collected for sucking up to Reddy Bros?

Sir, please….
What about commissions received for ‘helping’ candidates getting BJP tickets in 2008 Assembly Polls ? It surely much much more than the mentioned revenues of the school. ( Does the school revenue take into account the donations taken ?)
What about ‘fees’ received for calling and bullying officials for mining licenses in Bellary for ‘friends’ ? (Which official dare say so Ravi Belagare and end up on Cover page of Hi Bangalore ? This is one magazine cover no one wants to be )
There are more…what about share of profits from the his illustrious and extremely powerful Editor friend ?
Anyways, its a good start and Ravi Belagare deserves credit for this.
Can his move inspire the ‘most powerful’ Editor in Karnataka to declare his assets ? The challenge here is to keep the lists of asset lists confined to one page…

Court orders attachment of Ravi Belegere’s property
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELLARY, FEB. 18. The court of the City Civil Judge, Bangalore, has ordered the attachment of the house of Ravi Belegere, Editor of Hai Bangalore, a Kannada weekly, as per the decree of the Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bellary, in connection with a defamation case filed by M. Diwakar Babu, former Minister, against the Editor.
The Principal Civil Judge (Senior Division) and Chief Judicial Magistrate, K.M. Hadimani, had ordered that the “plaintiff was entitled to recover a sum of Rs. 25 lakhs from the defendants with interest at the rate of 24 per cent per annum with quarterly rests on Rs. 25 lakhs from the date of the suit till the date of decree and future interest at the rate of six per cent per annum on Rs. 25 lakhs from the date of decree to till the date of realisation.”
The total amount comes up to Rs. 30,23,522.
Mr. Babu had filed a defamation case against Mr. Belegere, and Lokesh Koppad, correspondent of Hai Bangalore, for publishing an article about him titled “Mundlur Pathakigalu Kole Madisuvude Heege,” besides publishing a photograph of the plaintiff.
Mr. Babu had contended that the article defamed him and his family members and claimed damages of Rs. 25 lakhs from the defendants.
As the defendants, though served with summons, did not appear before the court, the case was decided ex parte, Mr. Hadimani had stated in his judgment on March 23, 2004.
“There is nothing to disbelieve and discard the case of the plaintiff. Under the circumstances, I hold that the plaintiff is entitled for a decree as sought for,” he said.
Later, Mr. Babu filed an execution petition in the court of the City Civil Judge, Bangalore, to get the decree passed stating that the scheduled property, belonging to the defendant was located in Bangalore at 20th cross, Banashankari II Stage.
He had also said that if the executive petition was not allowed then he will be put to great hardship and irreparable injury without any other way to get the judgment and the decree executed.

Other than this yellow (black n white) journal, the illeagal mining issue & Belekeri port scam is reported by almost all the news papers/tabloids(NYT also). What does this show? RB is the mouthpiece of Reddies,no doubt.Once he wrote, he supported the Reddies just to get rid of bloodthirsty Divakar Babu gang. Now these Reddies have become Rakthabeejaasuras.RB is now blind to the loot in Bellary.

I am glad you have not forgotten your good friend Sitanadi Surendra, i thought he was forgotten when he was alive. You never had Rs.380 in your pocket other wise we could have had more than half a bottle of Khoday’s during Malgudi days, the amount you carried was much lesser. Remember the point five petrol we used to fill in your Ind-Suzuki as well as mine. As for me i have nothing to declare but a lot of good will from the world over. Take care my friend, God Bless !

thanks to all the readers of Churumuri. Its good that some discussion is held about me. I regularly declare my profits, assets, liabilities to my readers and have been doing it for the past fifteen years. there are debates, discussions, different opinions about my writings and my integrity. i welcome all. no body is above this. i have invested lot of money on my school Prarthana. the money is earned from my paper, books and majorly from the TV shows. i have no advertisement revenue from the news paper and no single rupee is collected as donation from the children studying in the school. the fee that is collected is very moderate compared to the other schools of bangalore. I am not affiliated to any political party and have no dealings with Reddys either official or unofficial. blackmail, threatening officials, publishing illegal books etc., can not survive for Sixteen years. Of course, there are cases which i am fighting in the courts. i know, the reputation of a man lives even after his death. If somebody doesn’t know the profit margin in the news paper industry, i sympathize with his ignorance.

I’ve been reading RB’s paper since its first issue. I appreciate him for his wonderful pros and the way he brought up tabloid with whatever the means, so that a Kannada journal could make so much of money.
In such a competitive world, one who survives is the one who thinks innovatively. Here people are talking about some unauthorized translations. It might be referring to ‘God father’. I never could get English version of God father so much to my heart than RB’s translation, reading it in my own language. He saw an opportunity and encashed it. I am sure, he knows not to go back to those days where he was zero. He has to struggle to survive, he’s. He’ll do anything to survive. Even goods will be erased how ever good you are in this world.
I was forced to leave the company I worked for due to politics of people. If he’s surviving for 16yrs, he will do anything to survive. After he’s a man. He will portray good, but others see bad in it. Quite natural.
Court can only see arguments and evidence, Unfortunately RB hasn’t made a CD of diwakar babu’s atrocities of decade back. Otherwise, court don’t have to search for his house. It would have put Babu behind bars…
I’m from a place where my family was humiliated and forced to leave the village to come to this city and live. I can never forget that insult thrown on my family and me. I suspect the same with RB. Mundlur family; the way I heard about those demons; nothing can calm my blood. I am sure, that wound hasn’t healed inside RB. As a man he would use any power to protest and stop that evil family. Now he is stuck in a dilemma. He has supported Reddy gang to pitch against that family. But non one is a meek when he gets power. Reddys has power now. You decide what next ?
But sometime around 10yrs back, all this success gotten into his head. That was the worst that happen to him. I don’t see a much quality or punch in recent news.I am sure, various cases have pounded on him made it a soft paper. As a man who thinks there’s no one better than him; he has seen a spark in Pratap simha, who has that edge to go big as RB is today. He’s clearly jealous of such a nice writer. He couldn’t resist and used all that opportunity to smack that boy down..I feel pity for you RB…people are watching.
get up.

Dear Ravi,
I am not interested in your balance sheet but I would like to say a few words: I enjoyed reading your Kamaraja Marga which is truly a brilliant satire on our contemporary State and National politics. Your usage of Kannada language is simply amazing! The doings of characters like Shubha, Chowdoorappa, KarthiKumar, MaayiGowda, Devanna and others simply titillate the readers imagination. Nice touch on Shubha being in a lesbian relationship and all that…
Somehow you continue to make elementary mistakes with regard to liquor measurements as in a “a pint of whiskey or even a pint of rum” being drunk. Please do understand that only blood and beer and a few other fluids are measured in pints (pronounced Pai-ints, Kannada Pai and ints). Whiskey and Rum are always doled out in large, small and Patiala pegs.
Also if possible take it easy on Pratap Simha. It is quite obvious you have been motivated beyond journalistic integrity to attack him in your pages. Thanks.

Dear Sir,
I am a congress party member from Bangalore north constituency. I am an admirer of your administration as a chief minister. Our state had only 3 efficient chief ministers for the past 40 years viz. Sri.Veerendrapatil, Sri.Ramakrishna Hegde and thereafter you sir.
Since the beginning of this year the state witnessed numerous scams, reports in paper against many politicians of Karnataka also.
The Public are revolting bringing out corruption cases boldly which was not experienced by any politician in the past. It is a good turn of events meaning political participation or frustration of leading life experiencing pressure due to corruption.
Private complaints to Hon’ble lokayuktha against officials for corruption charges are most of the time for better administration / to claim reliefs/ frustration due to corruption. This trend was set during your tenure appointing a bold Lokayuktha Hon’ble Sri.Venkatachaliahha who took revenue & other prominent departments in to task bringing some relief to the general public.
The private complainants who are filing cases against chief ministers are not the frustrated one –any one can guess. For example a businessmen Abraham.T.J filing complaint on you sir at a time when you have a different responsibility as a central government minister is definitely a motivated cause of action. Who is motivating the public? The answer: A politician who intends to become the chief minister of the state. He is clearing his way – the likely obstacles to achieve his goal- that is his own pre -assumption that “these are the obstacles (Chief ministers against whom private complaints are filed in the Hon’ble Lokayuktha”).
As a member of congress party I have been closely associated with the fans of Mr.Ck.Jaffersharief. From my seniors I have heard his past tactics in raising to politics. From my seniors I have heard that, he was a car driver / office assistant during the regime of Smt. Indiraghandhi and secured a platform as a political leader by trouncing/ conspiring against -the former chief minister Sri.Veerendra patil and actively indulging in Ramanagaram Riots.
The present scenario: He has lost in the Elections, he has lost his son also and without any political recognition in the party circle thought of raising back and is coming out with crooked ideas to achieve his ambition of becoming chief minister of Karnataka in future.
He is a very clever criminal minded politician who is capable of posting his own men in any organization/ any political party / any group of agitation/ office of any ministry-be it a BJP ruled/ any other political party. Mr.Abraham may not appear to be a follower of Mr.Jaffersharief but in reality a politically motivated person. Mr.Jaffersharief has got other ideas to sideline Mr.Siddharamiayya- stating / highlighting his Anti congress statements / agitations in the past that has affected congress party and many other plans to bring himself ahead of others by contending he is the only loyal congress politician in the state, free of any scams and a perfect personality to become the chief minister of the state. Mr.Siidharamiayya is happy when his Ex-friend Sri.Kumarswamy is taken up by Hon’ble Lokayuktha thinking that, this matter would help him to contend for the chief ministership in case of Congress & JD(S) Coalition government in the next election, even if JD(S) becomes a major seat gaining party.
This is the reason Mr.Jaffersharief has taken a bunch of people amongst his followers posting them across to file private complaints in Lokayuktha.
He took up the matter with Sri.Yediurappa, Sri.Kumarswamy that was looked by the public as a justified action, but his actions of motivating Abraham to file a complaint in lokayuktha and thereafter making a false propaganda to tarnish your image for his benefit could not be tolerated by me. Even( if & it will)the petition before the Hon’ble lokayuktha making false allegations turns out to be false accusation, he has left a negative remark on your administration in Karnataka as a Chief minister that he intends to highlight in the year 2013- 2011events as a black mark- Diary of events published in news papers.
The shameless politician Mr.Yediyurappa ( I call him shameless as he is trying to cling/ regain Chief minister’s Post without vindicating / demonstrating that he is innocent) knows that his friend Mr.Jaffesharief has arranged to file the case @ Lokayuktha. With an intention not to give importance to Mr.Jaffersharief he dragged the name of Sri.Kumarswamy accusing him of back stabbing him. Both Mr.Jaffershrief & Mr. Yediyurappa have the unholy alliance involving certain irregularities / Mr.Jaffersharief having a legal grip on Mr.Yediyurappa and therefore can not open his mouth against Jaffersharief. Sri.Kumarswamy was taken by surprise for the blame which he did not have an iota of idea/ intentions. After meeting him Mr.Yediyurappa pretending to be the convinced, did wait for an opportunity & later turned the blame on Mr.Eeshwarappa for his debacle / his state of affairs to gain advantage in his party circle. Mr.Eeshwarappa thought he can gain mileage by making certain accusations on Mr.Yediyurappa but failed & later on had to keep quiet due to pressure from party high command when Mr. Sharadyadav made statements about Mr.Yediyurappa joining JD(u) and the rumors of joining NCP party . As Mr.Jafersharief is a closest friend of Mr.Kumarswamy’s Father, he has to keep quiet even if he comes to know the fact that Mr.Jaffersharief is creating chaos in Karnataka politics. Mr.Jafffersharief is having bunch of Hackers of information and has a data bank on each & every politician including Mr.H.D Devegowda. In effect Jaffersharief can be termed as thorny pig which even lion think twice to approach/ fight.
While Mr.Jaffersharief successfully handled various cases, Jain-Hawala scam, ABB loco deal scam and land grab charges filed by Former Revenue minister Rajashekar Murthy & 28 other MLA’s-( Shutting the mouth of 28Congress MLA’s) came up strongly,he played politics with usual tactics of –minority tag and successfully emerged making Mr.Rajashekar murthy mean & out of politics gradually by blaming him : he (Sri.Rajashekar Murthy ) is joining BJP in Oct93 . Later on Raid by CBI, Petition by Former M.P Nanjegowda & other private complaints for amassing wealth disproportionate to his income ( a car driver up to 1970 and later on raising to be a minister). He even published an article in Kannada news papers on 15-11-95 stating : the country needs a Muslim Dy. Prime minister hinting his ambition at the time when he was sacked out of Railway Ministry for his inefficiency out of ill health and offered a minister without portfolio. He showed indiscipline / Arrogance in the party and resigned from the post of Minister without portfolio and later gave statements in Kannada News papers: Country needs a Muslim Dy.Prime minister. Later on he protected the corrupt police official the then DCP-east Mr.Kempiahha whose assets were raided by the then Lokasyuktha by influencing the then chief minister Mr.Veerappa Moily & Governor Mr.Lynn- not accepting the resignation tendered by Mr.Kempiahha ( tainted DCP). At present Mr.Jaffersharief can not raise back / regain his image without ditching some big political personality to gain the prominence to the required extent insidiously. He joined hands with Santhosh Hegde luring him to fight ( assuring congress support)for the country’s prominent post of Dy.Prime minister if he can pull down the present BJP government. He has conspired with Mr.Mallikarjuna Kharge ( luring him Minority’s never get chance to rule the state, Karnataka politics is dominated by Gowda’s & Lingayaths), the governor & Mr.Santosh Hegde. You may be surprised but when you do logical reasoning : “ Why Mr.Santosh hegde released his report / charges on Mr.Yediurappa at the fag end of his service ?”. If he is a selfless public servant he would have initiated earlier, followed up prosecution and fought up to the end to see that Mr.Yediyurappa is behind the bars for the offence he has committed within his tenure. Mr. Santosh Hegde deliberately wanted to keep the issue alive for political gain and therefore with the pretext of voluminous reports, acted on Mr.Yediurappa at the fag end of his service, timing the whole process beginning with -filing the complaint and so on. When you compare the services-motive of Sri.Venkatachaliahha & Mr.Santhosh Hegde, one can guess the actions by Mr.Santhosh Hegde is for fame. Later on Mr.Jaffersharief started using his followers to file private complaints on Mr.DharmaSingh also, and on you sir who are recognized by the congress as fit personalities to become the chief minister of the state and also Mr.Kumarswamy. In the next assembly elections BJP ‘s defeat and a coalition government is a definite outcome for the reason that the Present Chief minister is soft peddling to survive feeling as if he is sailing in a risky boat and would not be able to reestablish the image of the party specially when Mr.Yediyurappa( Tainted minister) has come back to the party fold, then who gains the credit of pulling down BJP Govt.-it is to Mr.Santhosh Hegde. The scam involving you Sir and Mr.Dharam Singh, Mr.Kumar swamy, all these leave a vacuum in leadership. With the support of Mr.SanthoshHegde giving a clean chit to Mr.Jafersharief, he has planned / planning to carry out such criminal activities to rise to power. The behavior of public rejecting congress, and thereafter coalition government of Sri.kumarswamy & Sri.Yediurappa for the main reason that : Sri.Kumarswamy broke the promise of sharing his tenure with Sri.Yediyurappa indicates that the public will reject BJP again, if Sri.Yediyurappa is projected as a candidate for future chief minstership by BJP. Hence congress coming back to power is sure, but why the circus of tarnishing your image?
I request you to put a check on his Anti-party / criminal activities and bring out / bring these to the notice of party high command / or take suitable action that you may deem fit necessary. I would like to suggest you sir, to bring/ take up enforcement of a legislation / law restricting non-graduates from entering parliament as member of parliament and at least studies up to the age of 18years to enter an assembly hall as a legislator or any public office ( committees, corporations etc..). This would restrict criminals/Goondas / Rowdy sheeters entering public offices by atleast 50%. Being a high profile central government minister, you can achieve this sir, which would be a landmark achievement in your political career and a great service to our country.
I agree with bukka2013 that the so called thorny pig Mr.Jaffersharief is capable of posting his followers in BJP also and capable of carrying out his plans insidiously with great ambition of demanding that minority should get a chance of chiefministership. I agree with bukka2013 that : Mr.Yediyurappa is a shameless chief minister of this era. Instead of clinging to power he can take up the cases / Launch a tirade on corrupt politicians of congress party, demonstrating the reality & his service mindedness to the public to regain his lost / Tarnished image. So far he is blaming other politicians of his own party / coalition partners ignoring the feeling of general public. He thinks public at large are fools, that he can make up with his own method of holding a grip on his followers which will cost dearly to the party. Once out of power BJP cannot come back for twenty years. The party can comeback only if a tirade is launched on corrupt congress politicians, otherwise could be wiped out in the next elections.
With his continuation in BJP, BJP’s down fall is imminent. The fact that BJP let business tycoons ( Reddy’s) free to continue using political power to make their own empire and still thinking of supporting them demonstrates that RSS-origin of BJP has no control over the party but few Reddy’s controlled the administration of BJP ruled state. BJP can survive only if business men are kept away from it’s Party leadership. The Hon’ble Chief minister Sri.Sadananda Gowda should sideline Mr.Yediyurappa just before the start of elections- and that is going to happen to a blackmailer- threatening to withdraw support of his followers. Mr.Yediyurappa is a close friend of not only Mr.Jaffersharief but many other Congress Heavyweights and would never show any sign of annoyance/ protest on them is also true because of the legal grip they hold on him.
Mr.Yediyurappa should publicly apologize Mr.Kumarswamy for the blame for the reason that : the result of next election indicates a coalition government. With Coalition –partnership only BJP can survive. The Lokayuktha has turned out to be war field for the big politicians. It has become a platform for businessmen / motivated persons to carryout political activities ignoring the required services to serve the common man.
Corruption at government departments is still at large as it is. The Lokayuktha institution should strive towards serving common man. A common man approaching Lokayuktgha to redress his grievance / to meet the officials gets a reply: The officials are busy with Mr.Yediurappa’s case, busy with Mr.S.M.Krishna’s Case, busy with Sri.Kumarswamy’s case..etc.. all these can be attributed to the political ambition of Mr.Santosh Hegde and people who have conspired with him.
