VASANT SHETTY pens a letter to Aamir Khan on the undemocratic ban on the dubbed version of his Sunday morning TV show Satyamev Jayate programme from being shown on Kannada television channels.

To
Aamir Khan
5 Marina Apartments
Pali hill, Bandra West
Mumbai 400050Dear Aamir Khan,
Congratulations on your successful TV debut with Satyamev Jayate and a huge round of applause for touching upon a topic as sensitive and heart rendering as female foeticide in the very first episode.
You even went a step further by meeting the Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot and requesting him for a fast track court to bring the killer doctors to justice at the earliest.
To me, you seem to be a man committed to bring social change in India and I truly appreciate your efforts.
You may have 12 different issues to highlight in the weeks to come, but today I am writing this letter to you to highlight the highly undemocratic ban on dubbing content to Kannada that is affecting millions of Kannadigas living in Karnataka and elsewhere.
Let me explain this.
As you know, there is an unconstitutional and undemocratic ban imposed on dubbing content to Kannada by a few trade organisations in the name of protecting culture. Due to this ban, the dubbed version of the first episode of your programme was not telecast on Suvarna TV.
Earlier, thousands of people like me wrote to you on Twitter and Facebook requesting you to get this ban on dubbing your Satyamev Jayate to Kannada removed. As a result of that, you wrote a letter to Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) requesting them to let your programme in Kannada on Suvarna TV but we have not heard about the response of KFCC to your letter.
Suvarna TV uploaded the Kannada webcast of the first episode of your programme on Youtube three days ago.
The video received 30,000 views in just three days busting all myths around lack of demand for dubbed content in Kannada and even sealing the mouth of all those naysayers in Kannada film / TV industry who ridiculed demand for dubbed content in Kannada as fringe.
But yesterday, even this video on Youtube was taken off by Suvarna TV.
From the circumstances, Kannadigas feel that this might have been done because of the pressure put by the same anti-dubbing associations, who were scared after seeing the popularity of the video. With that, even Internet is under seige in Karnataka, where a few private people decide what people should watch and in which language.
A lot of people who believe in democracy, the Constitution, and the freedom to choose are again writing to you to know how on earth a content creating social awareness be banned even on Internet just because it was dubbed from Hindi to Kannada?
Aamir, if you truly believe in transforming a society, bringing a social change, it’s time for you to talk and act.
Please raise your voice supporting the legitimate demand of Kannadigas demanding knowledge and entertainment in their mother tongue.
Please stand up and say that in this free country, every individual has freedom to watch any cinema, any TV program in any language of their choice and no vested interest should dictate terms to voiceless citizens in the name of guarding culture.
For four decades Kannadigas have been deprived of knowledge and entertainment in their language of choice due to this illegal ban on dubbing and now will Satyamev Jayate change that?
After all, truth alone should prevail.
Thank you
A Kannadiga

these are the type of youths we are generating in our state!!
if 30000 watched (i am sure some most have repeated to rig it up )
there are 3 lakhs who opposed it.
and it’s unbelievable this guy and 30000 can only understand lip syncing in kannada on internet leaving out hindi!!
this guy goes and falls under feet of Aamir Khan to educate us? – guy falls under feet of hindi film to save us. what an irony!!
this guy only asks dubbed version while he is not even interested in a remade version!!
see the way how whole generation can be diverted to oppose the original intent of the ban!!
its just a fake attempt to actually lift ban and luring kannadigas to their movies because they are losing markets due to upcoming high budget movies in kannada.
see the market.
aamir khan can never do movies which will lure punjabis(because of height)
he can never do movies for UP biharis ( because of intellectual content)
so his movies are confined to cosmos of bombay and bengaloor and our new generation who praise these chocolate heroes and try their dialogues.
the issues he has raised has been raised already by Lakshmi,
Malavika etc etc hundred of times on TV in achcha swachcha kannada understandable to the regional audience where actually female foeticide is prevalent in karnataka.
wonder if vasant has even heard them.
these young kids want dish served out of hindi and english plates else they practise untouchability. there should be a self-awareness and self-cultural awareness in schools before teaching cross cultural sensitivities.
what will vasant shetty do watching it apart from clapping and raising aamir’s status . he would even never travel to those parts.
it is just another raise we would give to already stinking nationalism ruining us from roots and claiming the small scale industries developed locally with great effort.
yes he won’t ask for a remake. can he make others speak our language? never kannada is inferior to these kids.

The ban was imposed when the industry was in a very nascent stage. Now, after 40 years, the industry still wants:
1. Govt subsidy.
2. Hide from competition behind the word “ban”.
Has the industry not evolved over the 40 years?
While Mr. Kaadu Manushya might want to believe “it hasn’t”, there are reasons to believe that the Kannada movie industry has evolved.
Mr. Kaadu Manushya here is supporting the ban on dubbing. I don’t know whether Mr. Kaadu Manushya understands the perils of dubbing, let me list them out here.
1. Because of dubbing ban, kids of Karnataka are not getting cartoon or child-entertainment programs in Kannada. Hence, they have already shifted to Hindi/English for their entertainment needs.
(There is one cartoon channel called Chintu TV. Even the kids give a thumbs down to it w.r.to quality)
2. For those kids, Hindi/English is the go-to language for entertainment. Having grown up this way, will they ever start consuming entertainment content in Kannada? I think not.
Through this dubbing ban, the Kannada-industry is digging its own grave (without realizing it though)
3. Hollywood movies with ‘special-effects’, are dubbed into Telugu/Tamil/Hindi and released in Karnataka. Those Kannadigas who are not much comfortable in English throng the theatres to watch these dubbed Hollywood movies.
4. After watching 4-5 movies in Telugu/Tamil/Hindi, Kannadigas begin understanding the movie-language also. Any hyped Telugu/Tamil/Hindi movie releasing next, these same people will be the ones to throng the theatres.
This very much explains the success of Tamil/Telugu/Hindi movies in Karnataka.
In Kannada industry, many argue that dubbing hinders creativity. While the same people are mum on the remakes, I really wonder if reamaking a movie frame-to-frame involves any creativity at all.

there should be awareness in school and to school teachers who say hindi is our national language and speak only in english since its english medium. those are set of people who inflict inferiority complex onto young minds and push kannada as secondary or tertiary langauge..
“target the roots(not learning kannada) and not the youths” who are asking for kannada. .
whats good for kannada doordarshan? airing content in hindi, english or dubbing them into kannada ?

I agree with Vasanth’s views! Who are these people to decide what others should watch. The freedom to choose should lie with the people choosing it. Let there be dubbed content. If I don’t like it, if I can’t stand the lip sync, I will not watch it. The rest all (read the above comment by kaadu manushya) is extreme! Let the democracy we have inherited be liberal or rather let there be democracy and freedom of Right to choose.

During the dubbing debate, we get to hear people talking about “allowing us to watch something or not allowing us to watch something”. Question is who are these guys to decide what we should see? If you do not want to see dubbed content, do not see. If you want others not to see dubbed content, go around and create awareness about the perils of watching dubbed content. Thats all. But talking about allowing people (your fellow kannadigas) to watch or not watch something makes u sound like a rowdy. This attitude smacks of fascism

Ree, Kadu Manushya avare – where did you get that figure of “3 lakh people would have opposed it”? Any source for that figure? I bet not – you simply made it up on the spur of the moment.
And let me educate you – the engineers who designed youtube are not idiots – they take care of attempts to “rig” the number of views – using IP addresses etc. There are many ways to check.
And your arguments of “height” etc. are just silly, has anyone told you yet?

@km At least pro dubbing folks have number to prove. do you have the number to prove that 3 lakhs are opposed to dubbing? If so, I’m sure you would rig it up.
Please ask “Kannada savior” ShivaRajKumar to produce or at least remake this. We are glad to support it. Will he or anybody do it in Kannada and market it as well as Amir Khan did? What Malavika & Lakshmi did was bring slum street fights on to screen, nothing much. Comparing those to well researched program such as SJ is a joke.
I also watched B Suresha’s debate about dubbing on SUvarna news, he started off the debate saying that anchors should agree that he was intelligent than others(anchors?) in the studio. He started giving lame excuses, twisting facts, absurd logic to oppose dubbing. This is the attitude that KFI folks carry. BTW, actress Tara gave this debate a miss. I wonder if she had anything logical to say supporting dubbing ban.
By dubbing we may not be forcing others to learn Kannada, at least it will keep Kannadigas from learning Tamil/Tellugu, hindi, etc

At last, Kannada version(dubbed) of Satyameva jayate has been removed from Youtube and their official website.
Looks like the Suvarna channel authorities finally budged to the pressure from few trade union kind of organizations which operate in Kannada Film Industry.
This incident will leave the common kannada audience with a lot of questions:
1. All these days, we have been told that dubbed content will never be accepted by Kannada audience. Now, when SMJ Kannada had 30000+ views, the theory has been scrapped.
2. Beyond a point, audience want the kind of programs with pure entertainment or social messages, of their choice. When there was a program that audience had accepted whole heartedly within 3 days by showing a whopping demand with 30000+ hits, how did the channel authorities decide to take it off the web?
3. Time and again, we have been noticing a few self proclaimed decision makers taking a decision in favor of 6 million kannadigas. Why not keep the content in front of people and let them decide its fate?
4. We have an elected government in Karnataka and we have law and order framework designed in our constitution. May be its time for our government to pitch in and let the people get the kind of entertainment of educative programs of their choice, in their own language, Kannada. Isn’t it unfortunate that a common man isn’t taken into consideration at all?
May be time will give the right answers to all these questions, at the right time

In an era where consumer is considered king, it’s upto the customers to decide what they will watch or not, if satyameva jayate has over 30,000 views in 3 days it’s clear many Kannadigas want it in Kannada and many of my friends agree. There is absolutely nothing wrong in watching everything in Kannada.

This letter from Mr.shetty is indicative of the mindset of pro dubbing lobby. Expression of thought and lobbying is acceptable and Democratic, but literally falling at one’s feet with feeling of mute surrender and asking a petty Bollywood actor to rescue and reinvent Kannada, is a Tad too insane and insulting. AMIR KHAN IS A NO ENTITY COMPARED TO DR.RAJKUMAR, AA NA KRISHNARAO, BAALANNA AND VENKATASUBBAIAH for kannadigas.
Fact is satyameva jayate is a very very poor imitation of Oprah show, so people giving sermons to Kannada filmindustry about creativity look inwards.
RAJASTHAN CM MEETING AMIR KHAN AND TELLING THE COUNTRY THAT HE CAME TO KNOW ABOUT FEMALE FOETICIDE ONLY AFTER SEEING THE SHOW is shocking, rajasthan is facing this problem from decades with a very poor male, female ratio , and CM speaks this way.
Every pro dubbing activist is taking the reference of BARCELONA DECLERATION about languages, one should understand that it is not a law and so not binding . Why not refer to KANNADA SAAHITYA SAMMELANA declerations from decades which have opposed dubbing in karnataka. It has more than 5 lakh members. Is online Facebook orkut poll of few thousands more Democratic than saahitya parishat and film associations? .

The point here is simple. Aamir is hosting a show on social issues and possible solutions to them. Karnataka has a social issue where Kannadigas are denied their rightful access to knowledge and entertainment in their mother tongue by few private people. His very show was not telecasted in Kannada due to this ban and hence this open letter to him requesting him to speak for this injustice.

1. you need to request for lifting ban on cartoons. i don’t think that would be disagreed. moreover i have seen many being dubbed already. similarly NGC . ullas karanth and many environmentalists have to be contacted by KFI.
2. i agree. but if you check youtube and search rotti angadi kittappa you will get loads of rhymes with subtitles and views more than a million each. so its not very sad. big investment has to be made for animations .they should talk to software people who are on their toes nowadays. the cream software kannadiga professionals are ready to be skimmed.
3. ban them. they need to be banned.
4. that is IQ here. we tend to digest them. how did you think we have highest number of literary awards.
@harsha,
adu haage nadiyalla. they will release non-kannada as well as dubbed movies – then imagine what will happen!
its a shadyantra.
do you think female foeticide will stop in rajasthan by a nod from court to start a fast track court just because aamir started it?
recently haryana which encloses capital by three sides started a dress code for women including judges!! and there is nothing anyone says about it. think even including PM’s house and parliament is at a throwaway distance!!!
just take Aamir Khan . he has a loved one divorced. has a second marriage. the two kids are fatherless now!
howcome a muslim can marry 4 while hindu can only 1.
why doesn’t he raise these issues? – that trend itself is suicidal. this superiority complex itself leads to foeticide!
isn’t he afraid?
take for example Puneeth. he sings “taliban alla alla… bin laden alve alla”
in AK 47 om puri was used to say “dawood mera jootha hai”
the industry of bombay is not as open and mature as ours. they may have market but yes prostitutes own market. don’t they?
all these things need a much bigger social change in mindsets than just getting telecast on television and raising sensationalism.
so better help the family , local , regional and neighbours than dreaming about a nation. they know how to squeeze your taxes and leave you in distress.
there is nothing new from this episodes. these things are not gonna change anything except hype of nationalism and give chambu to local industry.
@Hamsa
who has given right to ban pornography. it still is . isn’t it. cool down. there are some norms to be followed. you need to watch kannada channels also to argue efficiently. just because you like aamir khan’s body doesn’t mean malavika doesn’t have one.
contents are same in programmes. bodily malavika is more plump. but yes composition is same. red blood and muscles and bones.

Lost all credibility then and there. 30,000 people watched the video doesn’t mean only 30,000 are pro-dubbing. fyi, in India less than 10% of the population has internet connectivity and I bet more than 70% of that mass were not even aware that this program was made available in Kannada on youtube. This is not your typical KFI election to rig. And why should we travel to those parts of the country? Isn’t that the whole purpose of television? Ridiculous. And do you know why Kannada became inferior to these kids as you claim? Because anti-dubbing people like you have successfully convinced those kids that entertainment, knowledge, world view etc are available only in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu while all you get in Kannada is a hero chasing the villain with a “Long”. Wake up and emerge out of 1950’s. We are in 2012 already.

Let me clarify to everyone in this forum: I was against dubbing until I came to know the impact of “not-dubbing” on our language and culture. When you hear the word dubbing, do not limit your thoughts to movies. Consider the world of science revealed in channels like Discovery, D-Turbo, National Geographic, History, T&L, etc.. How can a common man who is residing in any part of Karnataka understand it? Can any of our Indian channels provide such rich content on science? If this content is dubbed to our language, our people can understand it effortlessly… Today we are in a state where we depend on other languages for entertainment and knowledge; let this state of affairs end. Let us get entertainment and knowledge in our language.
Lastly, why should one person decide what the others should watch? This is democracy and people will decide what they want…

never we had a forum before where kannadigas voiced their concerns together. churumuri is becoming day by day stage as kannadiga jagruti vedike.

A letter to Aamir Khan will not get a reply for sure but this discussion is a daari deepa to KFI and Kannada TV. please continue voicing your opinions and also people who can invest please do it contacting excellent directors.
the programme called “thhatt antha heLi” recently won longest running quiz programme in limca record book.
the integration of film stars into TV started with Puneeth.
The next step is to make film stars learn swachcha and nirargala kannada.
once they do they will be great to watch and listen and there won’t be any letters written then.

The house is clearly divided on the issue of dubbing foriegn programmes in kannada. Its true that in a democracy freedom of language and expression should be upheld. We are the only state perhaps in India where local language and culture is fast eroding. Hence, the protectionist mindset. The argument that KFI is a cartel banking on this to serve their interests is not entirely wrong. So, I am glad that this issue is being debated so fiercly. The fact that KFI is substandard and kannadigas are lazy slobs who would rather watch anything from other language to satisfy their thirst for quality than take the pains to improve their own industry. Unless addressing this core issue it is point less going into dubbing issue. The inferiority complex stems from this which feeds the protectionist mindset.
If you cant get a great programme in your language dont expect somebody else to do it for you, for example dubbing. Strain your nerves, body and mind to create your own programmes and movies. Take on the current KFI, take risk , produce what you deem a great movie. It doesn’t come by prostarting in front of others who are doing well. Their aim is maximum profit.
Kannadigas go do it if you pride yourself. Kayyi kesaradere baayi moosaru

There are lot of Kannadigas who are watching telugu, tamil, hindi flicks and if we release them in kannada, kannadigas will come back to their root.
Also, I am sure that no of theatres releasing movies in para basha will come down since kannadigas will start watching movies in kannada.
Problem faced by kannadiga and not by a person who has accepted all languages :
1. I want to watch DISCOVERY channel in Kannada. Why am I NOT allowed?
2. I want my kids and younger cousins like to watch cartoon shows in Kannada and I feel that they can understand better, why are they denied of entrainment in Kannada right from childhood?
3. Today, If one can release English movie dubbed into telugu , tamil in Karnataka, why not a Kannada version?
if TV shows can solve India’s problem, then all would have been on TV only.. the issue here is more about dubbing and not just about Aamir Khan. So, the fundamental problem lies with the ‘madivantike’ of the KFI and its fear to face the competition.
KFI is MOSTLY filled with morons.. thats a hard truth and its hard to deny it..
offlate, there are more half baked directors, actors, writers etc. who think that they are better than the rest and therefore their views are the best and there should be no opposition to it..
When we encounter such folks, we can pity these ‘frogs in the well’ since they are under the impression that they know the best and rest are just a piece of trash..
Lets consider a run of mill movie :
hero-in – para bashe
villan – igu adhe para bashe inda
ivarige dubbing madisdre aga paravagilla ante.. :-D
singer – para bashe
music director – most of times, para bashe
technician, outdoor units – chennai , hyd etc..
hero – kannadiga but always looking at telugu tamil hindi english cinema and trying to copy it..
ista ada mele, illi yaru kannadiga? ivaru mado remakes kannada culture na reflect madata?
ivaru torso long maachu culture namma srujanasheelate na kapadutha?
Also, we shouldn’t compare industries. Our motto should be to give best content made elsewhere in kannada language instead of asking our clan to learn those languages.
how long shall we watch the remakes of Tamil/Telugu movies ?
how long will be bear the torture of watching movies made by half baked directors?
how long will be using English for improving our knowledge (scientific, technology etc ) ?
Lot of ppl are asking today’s youth to stop watching dubbed content coz its affecting kannada artists. .
internet bandirodu inda, all our postmen are losing jobs and prominence.. by using cars.. our jataka stands got eliminated.. aste yake by introducing cinema, our drama/touring talkies folks lost their jobs.. since cinema was introduced, imagine Master Hiranaiyiah doing fast until death since his company would go down in lane. Or if they collectively decided to ban cinema since it destroys language, culture etc..
where was the care and concern for these folks when we moving up the value chain?
Also, the argument of losing jobs is flawed since we have lot of opportunities and there is no restriction of making good content. stating budget constraints and poor marketing fund is not a reason for movies failing, its more of fundamental Q. Our movies have stopped reflecting reality.
Today, underworld is not a big issue in bangalore or karnataka. yet, most of the movies revolve around these topics.
The rest of movies which are based on village topics.. In these movies ; none of mannerisms, dressing etc on screen reflect a average kannadiga, its a scene to scene copy of tamil or telugu flick.
Finally, the q is
“What is pro Kannada?”
1> Watching Telugu film in Telugu, Watching Tamil film in Tamil, Watching Hindi film in Hindi, Watching English film in English.
2> Watching everything in Kannada.
These people have forced us to watch content in non kannada language when we can dub them.. arent we entitled to various other forms of entrainment in kannada apart from whats available now..
dubbing will take the value chain forward and not a step backward! the language will be heard everywhere and kannadigas will get all content in kannada. we can stop running behind other languages and stick to our language!

Remove the ban on dubbing. Down with undemocratic protectionism!
Chidu22 – remember that Karnataka is not Bangalore. Just because you see large scale migration into Bangalore, does not mean that “language and culture of Kannadigas is fast eroding”. You are just making the same mistake that elite Basavanagudi-Jayanagar types keep making, which has resulted in the massive gap between North KA and South KA.

From many years another issue concerned to bengaluru is being debated with lot of passion, may be different from dubbing debate but intentions and motives resemble.
A section OF IT PROFESSIONALS AND PAGE 3 PEOPLE are lobbying hard for 24*7NIGHT LIFE, WITH DRINKS, DISCOS FULLTIME, FULL THROTTLE.-THEIR stand is, they work hard and they have to chill out whenever they wish and this will bring laurels to karnataka .
Another section of society which represents real bengaluru feels that having night full of booze and discos, law and order of the city will be severely compromised with increased accidents, crime against women.
Bengaluru police with larger public interest in mind, continues with the 11 .30-12 deadline and its working fine.
Now one can’t say that it impinges on customer rights. No cartelisation.
Language and. Culture is a sensitive and important issue, and if even a single person feels dubbing will ruin his language, he has the right to go all out and protest because it is his mother tongue, and India is organised on linguistic basis, a linguistic population has every right to say no to anything detrimental to its existence., if not, one will be violating the spirit of Indian republic. So in cyclic web of reality world everybody are customer to some one, hence everybody must be kings.!

Well, we need to first look at what we as kannadigas are doing for our brethren. a) Speak more Kannada in daily life and encourage our children to do the same. b) Try and employ more of our own state people. c) Kannadigas need to think about setting up small scale industry or get into business, being employed in s/w need not be the be-all of existence; our state does not have a business class per se. Every where in Bangalore one sees persons speaking language of near and far states. Even in a place like City market locals are at the periphery.

@Kaadu Manushya – even though your arguments may seem illogical, baseless, flawed and stupid to me I am not going to ask you to shut-up. The people supporting ban on dubbing are doing just the opposite – asking people to shut-up and accept their ban, which is undemocratic by itself.
That’s the point being made by people against ban on dubbing. Everyone has the right to choice, the right to speak out, and the right to express opinion. Banning dubbing is like asking the dubber (part of ‘everyone’) and the audiences to shut-up!
Now if you’d take some time off to understand this simple point, you’d see that by upholding such undemocratic bans, we, as a society, are conveying a message that we’re not a free society, and that we’re dictated by the whims and fancies of a select few who happen to inherit more muscles (of all kinds) and are using them for selfish motives alone.
Dubbing may be good or bad for us, but the choice is yours (and of the entire Kannadiga community) – do you want to take your own decision or let someone else seize that right from you and leave you hopeless in a pseudo democracy, in a pseudo free-market.

There are millions of poor children in our country who completed their basic education in MT. But Government or rich society doesn’t have any concern towards them. It is not a secret now that vested interested group formed a cartel, becomes Protectionist, made dirty framework for education system and dictates the Government to follow the same. Hence the millions are artificially made to lag behind the rest (those who are studied in English medium).

@EmptyMind, et all, to conduct Engineering, Medical and other professional courses in Kannada, you need faculty, books in Kannada. So, first step is to get all the technical works translated into Kannada and continue this year after year.
Before you jump into translation, English has 500,000 words, while Kannada has just 80,000. So even before you start translating, you have make-up (invent) rest of 420,000 words.
{ and students will hate you for calling a CD, Adaka Mudre }.
My guess is you will spend entire budget of Karnataka state in royalty, translation, review, errata & maintenance of Kannada works. And what do you achieve? Learn the same stuff in Kannada (and possibly fail in communicating with rest of the world).
Hope by now you will understand how futile this exercise is.
Perhaps Dr Ramesh, who has done professional course in Dental can enlighten us about the possibility.

@EmptyMind,
I understand your concern for kids who have done their education in mother tongue and now finding difficult to compete with those who have done education in English.
My suggestion to those kids is to work hard and overcome the English barrier.
My suggestion to you is to kill those bastards who denied English education to those kids (but get their kids educated in English medium).
You guys are wasting you time learning Hindi in Karnataka. Chuck it. Learn English (at least Science, Maths & Computers) and Kannada (Social Sciences or even economics).
Also, get a clue from Sanskrit lobby, who give 100 out of 100 in 1st language in 10th, 12th, while students who opted for Kannada can at best can get 85 out of 100. No wonder which language gets maximum students.

People like EmptyMind don’t understand the difference between entertainment dubbing and translations that can be used for conducting research and other technical stuff.
Any language can be used to depict a man running with a laang tucked into his underwear, waiting to slice up another man who tried to molest the first man’s girlfriend.
Unfortunately, not every language can be used to describe the manufacturing process for CPUs, used by Intel and AMD. Let’s face it – no Indian language has the requisite and necessary vocabulary.
EmptyMind and Kaadu Manushya are just another of those people who have taken all the advantages of English, and want to deny them to the remaining ones who are bursting to get out of the rut they are in.
Thankfully, the masses are realizing that English is the key, and they will not fall for people like EmptyMind and Kaadu Manushya anymore.
In India, English works. We have millions of qualified people in all fields, who have excellent English knowledge. We have enough books, knowledge exchange, and so on. We already have a base in English education, throughout the country – not just in Karnataka.
Yet, these people want the state to spend all the coffers of the state on a wild-goose chase to build up vocabulary for all the subjects in the world. They will try to perform this artificial experiment for the next five decades, and then people will realize that it was another failed experiment like the socialist experiment. By that time, the poor people who fell for this would be the losers.

One cant force all content in one demand and make it look stupid, unreasonable or exorbitant …. if they do, it will be similar to the demands made by Verappan while he held Rajkumar as hostage ..
As a starter, lets work on this dubbing aspect before jumping the gun on higher education, medium of instruction etc. I am sure that even an illiterate can benefit if we revoke the ban on dubbing.
Today, TV viewers in Kannada channels are only entitled to superstition/astrology, petty quarrels blown out of proportion, glorification of crime, atte – sose jagala and some daily soaps!
So, looking at content produced in so called Kannada tele industry ; one cannot increase his/her knowledge on various topics and we are doomed to die in ignorance if we just know Kannada!
When we ask for various content to be dubbed, it means that we need to introduce our folks to such varied range of topics, ensure that range of knowledge increases.
We are not bothered if producer from Munireddy palya or from Michigan makes profit . If one has content and zeal to take risk, be the fore runner.. else , just watch the content made by someone else.
Asking me to wait till someone in Kollegala gets this idea, produces this show and watch only that show over the one made in Cologne, is sheer bullying.
Today, we are building a system where Kannada means ignorance, only imaginary, poetic and cannot be used in day to day affairs (going forward)
Instead of pointing fingers and mixing issues, try to look through the eyes of commoner in chitradurga or shimago.. we are forcing him/her to look elsewhere if they need to update, stay current and improve their knowledge.
the WE , who are resistant to change, imposed invisible barriers and then blame the entire fraternity for their aggression.. we cannot live in isolation any longer!!
Stop blaming the techies or any profession, look at the issue brought up! Techies are not immune and cold, we are also subjected to same pain as felt by any other kannadiga! just bcoz we work in AC office and speak in English with our clients doesnt take our feelings away and love for the language wont reduce..
None of the anti dubbing folks have concrete answers for Q raised by pro dubbing folks.
Do they have scientifically researched data to prove that dubbing brings change in culture and language?
Has dubbing destroyed the social fabric in European countries or southern states?
Has dubbing made thousands/lakhs of people jobless in other cinema industry?
We need to change this system and someone needs to start it.. if you cant start it, atleast support the folks who are working towards it. Dont be one more leg puller in the crowd!!
Why are “WE” unfit to change?
why are “WE” like heddar pukal’s fearing about the worst all the time?
Why have “WE” stopped working towards making Kannada as the functional language
When shall “WE” be ready to start proclaiming that we dont need other languages for entrainment, science, information etc since our language is capable of translating it and we are fine with it?
Lets start with mass media and follow the same footsteps in other fields too! we can get back the glory and restore faith on Kannada..

Naastika, professional courses in mother tongue can be a reality, only if education policy in our state is clearcut and uniform, unfortunately its not. Tamil nadu is progressing in this direction.
TRANSLATION OF LITERARY WORKS OR SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS FROM OTHER languages has negligent adverse effects on Kannada than dubbing of visual media . Karnataka’s cultural icons have been exemplery in their efforts to protect Kannada by proposing dubbing embargo,
I sincerely hope mamata banerjee, naveen patnaik, jayalalitha, tarun gogoi and other leaders who value federalism come together, ban dubbing in their respective states.
THE LINE OF ARGUMENT THAT” KANNADA LANGUAGE IS INCAPABLE AND INSUFFICIENT TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE AND CLEAN ENTERTAINMENT, SO ALLOW DUBBING” PUT FORWARD BY PRO DUBBING LOBBY IS NOTHING SHORT OF A RACIAL SLUR AND INSULT to Kannada language and its glorious existence. I personally condemn it.

Yes I agree English is the source of almost all knowledge in today’s world. Kannada as our identity cannot be deserted either. Your problem is translation of those English words. If you consider the process of evolution of English language, translation is not at all real problem.
Remember English is just weeping baby in front of grandmas like Sanskrit, Latin, Greek or our own Kannada! It just absorbed knowledge contained words from languages across the globe, most of the time as it is, or with minor change to suite its dialect. It just evolved the process and continues to be the same forever! Kannada also underwent the same phase absorbing Sanskrit and few Persian and English words. But this process is very slow because of madivantike displayed by our people. Because of the same reason we find deficient in knowledge in Kannada to apply it in higher education.
To understand our linguistic problems, let us consider the characteristics of Language from the perspective of average native student. To be on par with todays time, I have used c++ concept here.
Characteristics of language:-
1. PRIVATE-Language gives identification to an individual or community and depicts our culture, lifestyle; tradition etc. here Language provides some basic knowledge of the world whatever it can.
HERE LANGUAGE GIVES US IDENTIFICATION.
2. PRIVILAGE- Language provides a tool to communicate between person to person or community. Here knowledge flows within the same language.
PEOPLE TO PEOPLE COMMUNICATION IN THE SAME LANGUAGE.
3. PUBLIC- Language should provide a tool to communicate between itself with another Language. So that knowledge flow from Language to Language is smoothen. Here we can borrow English word as it is or with minor change to suite our dialect just like what we done to bussu ,caaru for bus, car.
HERE – LANGUAGE TO LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION OR SIMPLY TRANSLATION.
If we contemplate on these features of language, we can notice these are mutually interdependent, one features conditions the other two. Here all are required for smooth flow of knowledge. If any one is masked it creates hindrance to the smooth flow.
From this we can arrive at conclusion, that we should also trigger the same process to evolve our Kannada, what Englishman has done the same to his English.
• Calculated unification of Kannada and English or any other language (only knowledge content for the betterment of society). Just borrow the words with the same meaning what it depicts, as it is or with minor change to suit our dialect. Just follow what Englishman has done. Even I don’t like Adaka Mudre for CD. So what CD is very much Kannada word to me :)
.
• Minimize the discrepancy between language of native tongue and language of knowledge applied in schools and colleges. Remember schools and colleges are not ONLY SOURCE OF KNOWLEDGE. A kid learns worldly knowledge even at his home and surrounding environment where native tongue has strong presence.
Students who have done their schooling in MT can accept your challenge to break English barrier in higher education, but system should also work towards minimizing the hindrance in the way. The basic problem is he loses his IDENTITY. He alienates himself from the rest of the world. Solution is just bringing back his identity. His identity is his MT (characteristic -1).
My request is to play with MT In PUBLIC domain -charecterictic-3(see above) to resonate with change with modern world. So the process becomes smoother. Hence we can find non-dualistic approach towards Kannada and English, the native tongue and knowledge rich language.

EmptyMind, I thought this question would come up. Everyone brings up the example of the East Asian nations sooner or later.
I happen to know a thing or two about East Asia, since I go there almost every month on official work. I just returned from South Korea a couple of days back.
The fact is, these nations – Japan, etc. just cannot be compared with India. Firstly, they started innovating from the ground-up, and they already had a history of technical literature in their own languages, from the very beginning.
Also consider the fact that India has a mind-boggling number of languages and scripts. Like it or not, an engineer needs to be able to work in Bangalore as well as Mumbai, as well as Gurgaon. En aspiring engineer will always prefer English, if he is given a choice.
The whole exercise of starting a translation program sponsored by the government is doomed to failure. The government cannot do the simplest of things, you really expect them to undertake the massive task of creating an artificial vocabulary, encompassing thousands of dynamic fields like thermodynamics, supercomputing, medical science, electrical circuits, aerospace… and mind you, these things are constantly changing, constantly growing and evolving.
You expect the government to embark on such an impossible task in Karnataka, and expect the governments of UP, Maharashtra, Punjab, etc. to replicate the same effort in their respective states. Come on, do we have nothing better to do? Is this impractical and hugely expensive idea something worth considering?
There is a huge divide in India between the English speakers and those who do not speak English. It is precisely because of this confusion on how to proceed, that the massive underclass is not able to move up.
A footnote on East Asia. English language skills are among the most prized skillsets in East Asia. People have told me that they “envy” people who speak good and fluent English – their small landmass and limited resources force them to expand business abroad. Proficiency in the English language is something that the new generation is running after now.

I understand your concern for huge expenditures and possibility of translation exercise. I am thinking “Translation” is really bad word chosen by me. Translation will leads to confusion as it ask for creation of another equivalent alien word for already familiar English word!
I should put it as “Evolution” of Kannada with absorbing more and more knowledgeable English words as it is or with minor change to suite our dialect. For your kind information, this evolution process is already happening at Bangalore and other urban cities tough we are not noticing it. Proof –just listen to their Kannada dialect you notice how they mix English words quite often.
What my point is just accept this fact. Synchronize the dialect Kannada (evolved and knowledgeable) with text book Kannada.
Add more and more English words which have got scientific knowledge with retaining verbal or subjective Kannada. I don’t think this process needs to spend more tax payer’s money.
This process also leads to remove the discrepancy between “Dialect Kannada“and “Text book Kannada” or “English” and “Kannada”. So that we can retain our Identity also acquire new knowledge.
And we may also expect tension between Bengalooru and Bangalore can be minimized -:)

Following a case by case approach to dubbing and some flexibility from both sides might be a better approach. The film industry does have some valid concerns and wants to protect its interests but announcing a blanket ban may only end up in isolating the industry. At the same time a good number of Kannada TV viewers do feel the need to see some dubbed programs but it should not end up opening the flood gates.
The industry representatives should be willing to negotiate and possibly introduce some guidelines and regulate what can be dubbed. Maybe they could ask for some reciprocal agreement with TV channels or film industry groups so some proportion of Kannada content can be dubbed in other languages.
That said, one wonders why this letter was only addressed to Aamir Khan. Perhaps it should have been addressed to the KFCC as well.

Each one of us is different ! Like Languages !
Language is existing for communication and nothing more or less..
If you want to fight , fight for bigger causes …
Fight against people who create barriers for growth …
Kadu Manusha – You are such a dumb **** . You are such a extremist like Kasab … There is no difference between him and you ….
If you want to sincerely develop Kannada then develop kannada, by killing other languages you will never grow kannada, it will be detrimonial ….

Boycott the films made by these people who decide what you see. It has no educational value anyway. You will not loose anything, instead you will save time and money and the message will be delivered.

Of all those who have posted their comments opposing dubbing ban in Kannada. How many of you are active in the industry? And,how many of you just pay 100-150 bucks to watch a movie over the weekend and complain about the quality of the entertainment(In mele kannnada cinemag matra baralappa nanu, well.what do you know?you have every right to criticize).
Why do you think dubbing was opposed in the first place?Don’t expect me to elaborate on this because you people seem to be like modern day Kannada “multi-tasking ,diversely talented Leonardo da Vinci’s who seem to be experts on everything”.Good Lord, how many degrees do you guys have.
What do you guys know about film distribution(Includes lobbying for theatres,non-kannada distribution lobby). Now,don’t google it before you posted your comments how many of you were aware of it.I’m sure some of you did but to what extent is the question. It’s much more complicated than you think it is.Don’t say “Then why don’t you explain it”
But I wholeheartedly disagree dubbing-ban on networks like CN,Discovery,NGC and Animal planet. However, the ban should be replaced with restrictions such as not allowing networks like ZEE,SUN and STAR TV & asianet to dub shows from non-kannada channels.which will only put the Kannada serial industry out of business sooner or later-not entirely though but good enough reason to employ less kannadigas. After all how many kannadiga owned tv channels do we have.
All those big talks about quality entertainment will do no good because there is something called TRP which decides pay checks in TV channels. So,how do you get a good TRP rating? just do what others have done before- Women oriented serials- hengasarige beren kelsa- stereotypical bhavane alva.I know.We should never underestimate the program and creative heads of TV channels because they would have worked their ass off to get there and they don’t want to be stripped off from their positions by doing entertainment R & D,which has odds stacked up against them. You say – Who cares, alright.TV serials are never made for smart people like you and to be honest I’m delighted to see so many smart Kannadigas talking about Kannada serials and Movies.I thought smart people would find Kannada news channels- stupid,Serials – disgusting, over exposed, chaotic compositions of jarring images.movies – longu, machu, adhe kelsakbaar deiro dialogue -ootak illade iro upinakai.
I’m not trying to convince anyone but what I’d like to say is things are a lot different than what you think it is.It is art from outside and money from inside. My English sucks pardon me for that.
Take care everybody.
