VASANT SHETTY writes from Bangalore: Bangalore is home to “Sandalwood”, the Kannada film industry.
The industry produces 120-130 movies an year and, like other major film industries in India, has about a 10% success rate.
Unfortunately, unlike other film industries, Sandalwood is known for banning dubbing of content to Kannada.
This unofficial ban on dubbing content effectively isolates Kannadigas who know only Kannada (approximately there are 2.5 to3 crore Kannadigas who know only Kannada and no other language) from the sea of knowledge and entertainment that exists in other languages.
We must note that the ban has no legal sanctity and is put in place by a private trade bodies like Karnataka film chamber of commerce (KFCC) and other similar organizations.
The private ban was put in place six decades ago in order to give boost to the then ailing Kannada film industry under the aegis of the legendary actor Dr Raj Kumar. The protectionist measure helped the novice industry to scale from less than 10 films a year to more than 100 films a year.
But like other typical protectionist schemes, the continued “PRIVATE” protection has resulted in isolating Kannadigas from receiving worldly knowledge in visual form and is fast turning counter-productive from the view point of increasing language’s reach.
Several past attempts by concerned individuals to debate the unconstitutional ban on dubbing was shot down in the guise of protecting of language and culture by vested interests.
Last year when the Hindi cinema actor Aamir Khan set out to do a social awareness program called Satyameva Jayate, he wanted to make this program available in most Indian languages using the means of dubbing.
In Kannada, the general entertainment channel Suvarna was planning to air this program in Kannada and as soon as the news broke out, sundry trade organisations affiliated to Kannada film and TV industry made sure that Suvarna channel backed off from that idea.
When Suvarna put the first episode of Kannada version on YouTube, it received more than 30,000 views in 24 hours and strangely the very next day the video was pulled out from the internet too. Cartels from the film and TV industry were suspected to be behind this.
Amidst all this, Competition Commission of India (CCI) entered the scene after a complaint was lodged with it on the grounds that the ban violates the freedom of choice of a Kannadiga consumer from watching the best of entertainment and knowledge programs from across the world in his mother tongue.
The dubbing debate seems to have entered the last leg with recent media reports (Udayavani, 7 January) indicating that the CCI has come down very heavily on all associations affiliated to Kannada film and television industry for their blatant anti-consumer and anti-competition actions. This has triggered raging debates on Kannada TV and social media about pros and cons of dubbing once again.
On a serious note, is there anything to debate at all?
It’s an open and shut case. Whoever wants to see original content, they should have their choice, and whoever wants to see dubbed content, they should have their choice too.
In this context, we are running a petition requesting the chief minister of Karnataka and his administration to ensure that the citizens of Karnataka are able to exercise their freedom of choice.

Another attempt by a business conglomerate which is sensex, nifty listed, also into movie production and distribution having a market cap in excess of 2 lakhs crore, to destroy Kannada film industry and Kannada television industry.
They are shooting from the shoulders of some misinformed, disgruntled young kannadigas in social media. They hurl CHOICEST OF ABUSES ON CULURAL ICONS OF KARNATAKA.
CCI is clearly exceeding its limit by issuing diktats on linguistic matters of karnataka which is not right.cultural ethos is not a marketable commodity.
Few months back, NEET wanted a uniform, single exam for medical seats across India, this clearly was death knell for students in rural parts of karnataka. Court took into consideration and quashed the idea of single exam allowing states to do the job. This is just an example to reiterate that FEDERALISM,LINGUISTIC FEELINGS OF THE PEOPLE OF INDIA SHOULD NOT BE SCUTTLED.

Our kid watching dubbed kannada movie will learn how to make movie and will produce good kannada movies in future and real kannda film industry will born which is compitative enough to face the problem. It will bring more rajkumar, puttanna kanagal, shankar nag, yogaraj bhat, pawan kumar to industry.

I’d rather watch sub-titles than a show with a risible lack of emotion or lip-sync, which is the nature of the dubbing beast. I cringe each time I have to view anything dubbed but then, that’s me. To each his own, of course, and there shouldn’t be any bans.

Those who want to watch content in original format have all the rights to watch it. Nobody is stopping them.
Similarly, nobody should be stopped from watching content in a language of their choice.

Those who dont want to watch dubbed content are free not to watch the same. those who want to watch it can do so. no one has the right to force a ban on the same. it’s that simple. personal opinions are different from enforcing them on others. that’s the whole point, simply put there is no debate. No law supports such a ban and dubbing exists elsewhere without having done the harm some anti dubbers love projecting. to conclude it’s the viewer’s choice to watch legitimate content in one’s own language. no one can snatch away that choice.

Not sure whether lifting the ban would do good or bad to Kannada and karnataka people in long run. But by looking at the people who are opposing to lift the ban and their behaviour during other incidents like Darshan episode and all.. i think its time to reverse the regressive law and try it out.

in theory, I agree that protectionism has killed Kannada Language cinema. But there is one other side to this story.
What is that is shown to the people of Karnataka (or any language) in the name of dubbing from Bollywood or Hollywood. Why are we forgetting that there is “people” and there is something called “people’s culture”?
Why cant the govt arrange parallel forums to show movies by legends like Girish Kasaravalli, Karnad and others? You go anywhere in India, people talk in respect about Karnad and kasaravalli. But how many days their films are shown in theaters? Why cant govt own one theater cum performing stage in each city and show such good movies ? May be they can show plays on alternative days.
Today’s total ban on dubbing is hurting Kannada Language more. How can a language be isolated from the world. Can anyone study how English language which is relatively of same age or younger to Kannada grew and became a world language? It went all over the world. It took words and concepts from all over the world. It accepted arts, culture and literature from any part of the world. Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Malaylam, Bengali, Gujarati all these languages can grow only if they welcome translations, dubbing, giving and adopting from other languages.
But When you bombard the commercial products from other languages, in Kannada theaters, Kannada TV channels, Kannada Ranga mandiras, the people of this linguistic region would feel alienated. Why should they keep seeing such movies which do not represent their life, language, cultural traits and aspects? (I am not saying people SHOULD NOT SEE. I am saying IT WOULD BE BORING AND MECHANICAL TO WATCH) It is natural for ordinary people in villages to feel strange. Do you know how many young people in Karnataka village spend days, weeks and months together gambling? There is not a single film theater in their area. There is not a single folklore venue where they can perform. See how people throng on the days of Jatras.. People want entertainment. People want entertainment which would reflect their emotions, their ways of thinking. Their art form, their beliefs, their faith, their religious stories, their Gods, their local heroes, their geography, their malnad, their waterfalls, their trees and birds, their types of houses, their architecture, their village bazaars etc. Such things can happen only in their own language.
Do you have any idea, how many days Kasaravalli’s films are shown in Karnatka theaters? I waited and waited when heard the news that Baraguru Ramachandrappa came with a movie. But when I asked local shop, some one told me, it was screened only for two days, and now it is gone. The story is not different in case of other directors and other movies.
In short, I am against all ban against dubbing. Unfortunately some producers are trying to control Kannada film industry by misusing the provisions of these rules. I think we need to think of other methods.
But when we emphasis the need to protect the local language and local culture, people laugh at us. They are mesmerized by the modern day commercial operas. Do they realize, how people feel inferior when listen to such colorful Hindi dance-dramas? It makes people slowly believe theirs is a second grade movie, second grade culture etc. Bollywood and Hindi language dance-drama has a wide audience. You can invest in crores in such commercial projects. What you watch and enjoy is not culture or art, but big money, big shows. They make you feel inferiour. Such movies, such visual art forms wont take you with that. You feel alienated. When you have relatively small audience, you can not make big investment, hence your art form may not be that colourful all the time. Most bollywood films are making profit even before they are released by selling the rights of film songs. But can a Kannada film maker sell his songs/music CD in mumbai, kolkatta, or pakistan market? The rule of the market is that, it would allow only that would permit to make maximum profit. The market would destroy everything else. Even when I oppose ban on dubbing, i would emphasis that something should be done to protect regional language based art forms. When Kumaraswamy became Chief Minister, he did something to promote folklore artists. They all got some income for some days. Why cant govt promote local film movement, by giving training to young artists in producing movies. Today digital technology has made film production really cheap. Not all movies and documentary films produced by young artists can be shown in theaters. But they need venues. This is why govt should build stages and local venues. Why cant govt organize a one month Youth cultural festival every year, where local artists can participate in local venues? And selected artists can be allowed to tour the state by performing on each stage? There can be some incentives to these selected artists. In short, the local youth festival should have two sections. One is merely for competition among the local artists. Second for exhibiting the art form of good artists from across the state. Govt can promote local trade when such carnivals are conducted. Even Samajwadi Party is conducting local carnivals. We need modern secular jatras where old traditional art forms should be performed/ exhibited in a secular context. Govt can show quality movies in front of such audience. Let people see award winning Kannada films.

Well said. The impression that is being created in the minds of the Kannada populace is, “other languages have great stuff, our Kannada entertainment is nonsense, with few exceptions”.
People of other states are able to watch every kind of movie made in every language, and very often they don’t even know that the original was in another language – they don’t need to know.
These anti-dubbing cartels are hijacking the issue of “Kannada” for their own benefits and bottomline. Poor gullible people like Dr. Ramesappa fall for their tricks.

@Ramapriya : Author hasn’t stopped you or anybody from protesting against the curbs that you have mentioned. Has he? Its individual’s choice or interest – be it watching the movie in original language or with subtitles or with dubbing so is putting forward the thoughts or opinions on the matters that a person is interested.
As far as dubbing is concerned, I’m for-dubbing. Whoever doesn’t want to watch dubbed content, they can stay away from it. But why to snatch Kannadigas rights of watching content(dubbed) in Kannada?

I, Dr.ramesh oppose this ANTI-KANNADA, ANTI – FEDERAL, ANTI – LABOUR CLASS phenomenon called dubbing. I do it as a regular watcher of Kannada movies in single screen theatres. I have watched almost a dozen Kannada movies in 2013 , all of them excellent in quality and content and directed by talented newcomers.
People asking for dubbing are those who feel its below their dignity to stand in queue in theatres, rub shoulders with middle class and poor. This is a dirty class divide mentality which even today exists in elite kannadigas.
DUBBING IN KANNADA FILMS AND TV SHOULD ALSO ANALYZED ON THE CLASS DIVIDE ANGLE,
MAJORITY OF SOPHISTICATED, UPPER CLASS WANT DUBBING.sensible lower middle class, poor, labour class wants to retain their Kannada cultural ethos by opposing dubbing.

Problem lies on both sides. The first thing I wanted to see was allow dubbing in cartoons which will not affect any artist or technicians. So pro dubbing guys should have sat down with the industry people and sorted it out. Films could have been taken later as it is sensitive and there is no striaght answer.
But the pro dubbing guys launched an all out war against the industry even calling names and abusing them on social media, and they have continued till date.
The industry guys still give very lame excuses and in some cases is devoid of logic. The pro dubbing guys talk about being a giraaki meaning consumer. What they dont understand is the complicated nature of financing a movie to its release. They are dealing in crores and the consumer is talking about paying 100-200 rs. Both should not be under estimated and that is where things are going wrong a bit.
Just like Kannada film industry does not represent Kannada culture, it is wrong to say Kannada films are nothing but rowdism, item songs etc.
Hope sense prevails and people leave their egos aside and come to the discussion table rather than spitting it out in the open and social media.

Needless debate. If they won’t want allow to dubbing let the KFPA isolate themselves and go to hell. There are better issues to cover like the low HDI in North Karnataka, focus on mere industrialisation and no sanitation in Kolar and Chikkaballapur. Now who cares about these issues? Vatal Nagaraj, KRV and the other people who oppose dubbing and vandalise properties in the name of Kannada are least bothered about these issues as it does not concern Kannada. These so called protectors of Kannada culture would not even bother to complain to BBMP about a pothole or garbage lying on the roads. But just utter the word Kannada and they shall indulge in breast beating and generalization of outsiders.

That leaves Puneet & the producer to be local guys. So the whole top management is imported.
And what is the story? About teen love & friendship. Difference being the location, which is New York. So the location is also imported. Note that New York is just for change, it could have been set in any Somanahalli of any taluk in Karnataka.
KFI (Kannada Film Industry) claim they uphold Kannada language, culture, heritage, art et al.
So we need imported folks at imported location to teach about Kannada culture & heritage to Kannadigas.

Some people are confusing the issue. There should be no ban on Kannada voice over for edutainment and infotainment programs on TV. But NO to dubbing in movies.
If ‘Right of the People’ is the tag line for pro dubbing lobby, then they should also ask KFCC to ban clause that restrict number of non Kannada movies to be screened in theatres per year and limit on numbers of prints non Kannada movies can screen concurrently during release.
If Vasant Shetty also write about this and take a stand then I am with him for dubbing in movies. I have been telling this to him and others on FB too.
One suggestion could be to have a referendum in Karnataka on this issue, let the majority view prevail.

Kannada films should look at Marathi films for inspiration. Look at the content of Marathi films and TV Serials. It is much superior. Marathi films are content oriented unlike Hindi, Tamil and Telugu films. Budgets are reasonable . Kannada films should emulate Marathi film industry and not shoot for Tamil/Telugu films

nothing could be more foolish than allowing dubbing. those supporting dubbing need only look at the havoc ads on kannada television have caused to the language. you will be hard pressed to find a single ad that is not dubbed. you will be hard pressed to find a single ad that features any kannadiga icons. this same fate will befall cinema if dubbing is allowed.
I wish this dubbing ban extended to ads too. we will be spared of trash like “‘poorti’ mooru baari!”. the cola companies for example, use north indian actors in north india and konga icons in tamil nadu. but kannadigas have to put up with both of them! and gult icons and mallu icons! wtf! why the eff can’t ramraj panche use a kannadiga when advertising on kannada television?! half the words are either kannadized-hindi or kannadized-some other language.
those opposing dubbing in kannada movies should think twice about what they wish for. it is one thing to ask for dubbed programming from Discovery or National Geographic or PBS or some BBC documentary. Commercial cinema is an entirely different cup of tea. And whether you like it or not, in a country where probably ~60% or more are functionally illiterate, cinema has the widest reach and especially in the case of kannada, is our best bet to counter the rampant and wanton imposition of Hindi.
Arguing to dismantle dubbing in cinema is simply playing into the hands of forces that have neither kannada, kannadiga nor karnataka at heart. at a time when fresh blood is entering and showing promise, we will effectively be nipping it in the bud.

The solution has to be found on a discussion table not on social media which is just a fighting arena available for everyone to see. I have no personal agenda against you or against the pro dubbing guys infact I agree with most of points but it is your execution that I vehemently disagree.
Coming to the origin of Ninnindale technicians, I would suggest watch what Kiccha Sudeepa said long ago – In most cases, they don’t have any thevalu to get non-kannadigas, it is mainly because of dates, availability etc. Taking the same argument, most software companies in Bengaluru have kannadigas as minority, so should kannadigas stop working for them? :)) It goes by your own argument that as a consumer (Kannada producer) he wants what is best for his film, his investment etc, so what if the technician is a non-kannadiga. So were PB Srinivas, SPB, Illayaraja etc
The first thing we need to act on something that we agree which is dubbing in cartoons. Let us be a bit matured and defer the contentious issue for later, which is what clever people do, not fight in the public.
One request to pro dubbing guys is, you guys are sounding too much like Aame Admi Paalty. Real life is not just about hero (AAP) and villain (BJP), it is much more complicated.
If you guys recall, Kannada film industry never had big fights like other indutsries mainly because whenever there was a crisis, Dr. Rajkumar always discussed and took everybody’s consent for what is best for the situation.

Our short-sighted, vision-less leaders are dont provide entertainment, artistic and sports facilities to our youth. But isn’t it also the youths’ own fault? Sometimes we need to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. We cant complain that there is nothing to do so i will sit at home gambling or jerking off. If we do, we will lose to more energetic people who come from a stronger culture in the long run.
And in this day and age, can government really force good movies down the throats of public who dont want to watch it?
Seems to me all this is a symptom of our own weaknesses. If we dont improve on these things, kannadigas will end up a complaining, ineffective folk; big in number but insignificant culturally or artistically; always in thrall of hindi or english. Maybe we already have.

Instead of a ban on dubbing, how about a tax on dubbing? The money collected can directly go towards funding culturally significant efforts towards local culture and languages.
How to make sure this money is spent judiciously is a million rupee question.

Few year back while in Delhi, my kid then 6 years spoke in perfect hindi, i was surprised, later got to know that cartoons like doreman etc are dubbed in hindi, alas her spoken kannada is roadside.
wish all these cartoons were dubbed in kannada.
My dumb kid does not know the greatness of Dr. Rajkumar or Girish Kasaravalli, Karnad and others. so refuses to watch nothing but the cartoons.

I gave instance of Ninnindale to expose the double-speak of KFCC. KFCC say dubbing will kill the KFI. But the KFCC has already killed local talent by importing all staff (except the male lead) from outside.
Nobody bothers when KFI hires people without knowledge of Kannada to make movies in Kannada. But cringe when the story is imported (i.e., remake). This is the double standard I was highlighting.
BTW, people are smart enough to see lame excuse of Sudeep on importing talent.

Dr Rajkumar is a great actor & a humble human being. His legacy is such that his nth generation can safely use his name. Note that he had vested interest in KFI. It was he who prevented telecasting of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana in Kannada on Udaya TV. Solving state problem is not like Khap panchayat judgement.

sisya, Good point. It is easy to talk liberally to allow dubbing sitting in an ivory tower, immune to the side effects.
Nastika has valid points. But they seem to more about how to remove monopoly over kannada movie culture from a small group of business people, and shift power to real kannada artists and technicians. I doubt if allowing dubbing will do that. This is an issue which our (non-existent) Karnataka leadership should discuss and act on. Politicians, religious leaders and the like. But they are busy putting our small bush fires or making hay while the sun shines.
For now, it is better to keep status quo and not throw the baby out with the bath water. Eventually even the ban on dubbing wont save the industry if it is not driven by real talent.

I dont think there is enough demand for all content to be dubbed in Kannada. We have to admit that Kannadigas can understand Hindi to some extent and English too. You can easily manage in Hindi in Karnataka. Karnataka is the most cosmopolitan state in India (after Assam). Apart from Kannada, Konkani, Tulu, Marathi, Urdu, Tamil and Telugu are spoke in large numbers.
I dont see Hollywood and Bollywood films being dubbed in Kannada. It just doesnt make business sense. They would be dubbed in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Same with cartoons , Discovery channel and NatGeo programs. There is not that big audience for Kannada. Same is true for Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam. Most Marathi and Bengali speakers can understand some Hindi.

Dubbing of movies into Kannada is inevitable. Kannadigas are smart enough to reject rubbish movies. Kannada should welcome artists and technicians from all over India. so lets quit moaning about dubbed movies. At the same time good, original Kannada movies will always shine and are remade by other film industries. Otherwise we will be stuck with Dr. Ramesh types whose tastes in movies do not go beyond cretinous looking Kannada film heroes and moronic mannina maga politicians. Thanks.

By now allowing dubbing we are really digging our own grave. People are being deprived(albeit illegally) of entertainment, which they rightfully deserve.
Also, to put it another way it would be “It is your karma that you are a mono-lingual kannadiga. Just take the crap that we have to offer”
If people are forced to get quality entertainment in other languages, then they’d eventually learn new languages just for entertainment/edutainment/whatever. The least we can do is let them have access to quality content(cartoons, discovery, natgeo) in kannada. This will atleast popularise kannada.

The anti-dubbing galata is spearheaded, supported and sustained by a small group of selfish businessmen, producers, investors and financiers (mostly non-Kannadigas) whose primary concern is protecting their business interests than promoting Kannada. Instead of preventing Kannadigas from viewing dubbed high-class movies and television programmes produced in other langauges, let these people produce quality Kannada movies like Mungaru Male, which have the potential to be dubbed into other langauges. Though a Kannadiga, I have stopped watching the dirty Kannada movies being produced now. Films alone cannot promote and popularise Kannada. It should be a mass-movement involving spontaneous actions and contributions from poets, novelists, artists, singers, writers, readers and most importantly from passionate Kannadigas who do not hesitate to speak in Kannada with non-Kannadigas, especially in Our own State of Karnataka! It is ridiculous to watch Kannadigas in Bangalore speaking in broken Hindi, Urdu and Tamil or English, even while making purchases or engaging any services!!! We try to speak in Their langauges while giving Our money to them!
Let us admit it. Kannadigas are not proud of their language, land or heritage. No wonder that the number of Kannada-speaking people in Bangalore is less than 30 percent now.

I’m a Kannadiga. And I know that rules, laws etc including that of the CCI will not hold good in the realm of Sandalwood so called Kannada marshalls! Sadly in Karnataka alone u find so many blockers/humps in every road – to knowledge or any real destination. They are all couped up in a well; dare u say that – u’ll b eliminated/silenced!!

Vasantha,writes about these needless issues instead of focusing on real issues concerning the state. It helps churmuri as well that they have writers on board such as Vasantha who rave and rant about emotional issues such as these and bring in more traffic to their site. Any amount of protection can’t redeem Kannada movies. Movies like Lucia come once a blue moon. With an adipose MP and his wife beater protege in the mix not much could be done.

Vasantha is this the same fanatic who once said on Orkut that all education should be imparted in the mother tongue and there should be no scope for English in imparting education. These days he is writing on Churmuri and not promoting Karnatique Blog Spot as is his wont. There are also some fanatics like Ramesappa, who once said that KRV should take up the cudgels in the same as ULFA has taken. Thank God now KRV is mainstream and they are focusing on things, which are relevant. Comments as the ones made by Ramesappa would be unthinkable in any other union and Churmuri does not bother reporting such people. Maybe because it keeps us entertained.
P.S I want to see Karnataka as developed as Goa and Kerala on the HDI front and as industrialized as Maharashtra or Gujarat. Bangalore centric growth does not help.Let us focus towards that instead of wasting our time on dubbing vs anti dubbing, Kannada vs Anti Kannada. Is churmuri listening?

Why there should be any doubt about that? I dont say, we should not teach children English Language. However, the medium of instruction should be child’s mother tongue.
Most students who studied in English medium speak good English, score good marks in exams, perform very well in interviews etc., easily get jobs, draw high salaries. But the problem is that they do only that.
Only a student who think and talk in mother tongue can do anything creatively. Others would end up clerks, coolies and techno-coolies. People with creative mind will do innovative things.
There are two issues here- There are large number of children whose mother tongue is English. The primary language spoken in their house is English (or some version of English). They should be educated in English language. However, this has certain difficulties. Most teachers in Bangalore private schools are under-paid. Such teachers dont have good command in English and speak substandard English. When some one has poor command in one language, he/she can not communicate effectively, and more importantly they cant inspire young minds. There are some schools in Bangalore, they bring foreign nationals to teach kids. These so called foreign nationals who are ready to come to India as part of NGO exchange programmes etc are worse than toilet cleaners.
Second issue doesnt have easy solution-
There are many factors which influence the personality development / intellectual motivation / vision / knowledge etc. How much parents take interest, how talented are teachers, curriculum, text book, infrastructure , medium of instruction and so on. But most important of all is peer-group pressure.
You can employ the best teacher and admit in the “best school”. But you cant buy peer group. This is why most educated parents send their children where people with higher socio-economic status send their children. The assumption is that, other children who come from educated families also would have better motivation etc. But this is not that simple. Half of the rich in a city are frauds like who made money in real estate business (not the ethical ones), brokers, corrupt bureaucrats, those who are working abroad etc. Children coming from such families would have certain personality traits. Second isssue is that, a kid coming from financially very poor family may develop lack of confidence or may not be able to mingle with other kids.
Hence, though in theory, medium of education should be mother tongue, if a middle class parents send their child to a Kannada/urdu/Tamil medium school, that child may get a peer group with poor motivation, and that would also affect the motivation of teachers.
We all know that 120 crore Indians can not get outsourcing jobs to cater to the need of 31 crore Americans. When only 10 crore of a 120 crore population speak English, there would be enough demand for “english speaking coolies”. But more than half of the population would speak good english by next two decades. We will have world’s largest english speaking toilet cleaners in India, then.

Let this hypocrisy about dubbing stop! We don’t have a monopoly over good story plot and movies! Lets make a few Kannada original movies and make them a success. The Kannada film audience is the ultimate arbiter of success here. Famous names in Kannada, should also be inspired about making good movies that can be dubbed into other languages. That should be our reality not delusions. The same moronic argument by Dr. Ramesh will not fool any one about the dashing good looks panache, elan and shit of Rajkumar’s progeny! By the same anti-dubbing logic, we should reject singers from outside, actresses, technicians, music directors, sets, stunt men and so on.

BHEL is suffering because they did sweet FA with their products for a long time. At its finest BHEL was a food factory for many incompetent employees. Chinese did better and offered better technology at cheaper rates. It is called competition. Talking about fixation you should come out of “An Area of Darkness” called Devegowda Land and also come out of “Among the JDS Believers”!!

Without knowing the Kannada film industry situation don’t blame the protest. Sandalwood market is very small and if we need to survive then Dubbing should be banned in Karnataka Permanently. Thousands of film workers would loose their jobs and their family will be in deep trouble if dubbing is allowed. Also coming to the point of Law, though law says that any language movie can be released in any state, then why there is a Push back from Andhra, HYD, Chennai and TN to release Kannada movies in their state. Law doesn’t work all times and there are exceptions based on the situation.

• ತಮಿಳು,ತೆಲುಗು,ಹಿಂದಿ ಜನರು ತಮ್ಮ ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಯಾರಾದ ಕಿರುತೆರೆ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳು,ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳ ಸವಿರುಚಿಯನ್ನು ಸವಿಯುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಹತ್ತು ಹಲವು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು,ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳನ್ನು,ಚಾನೆಲ್ಗಳನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಅನುವಾದಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು (ಡಬ್ಬಿಂಗ್) ಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ್ನ ಭೋಜನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ .. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಯಾಕೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಕಿರುತೆರೆ & ಹಿರಿತೆರೆ ಮಂದಿ ಇನ್ನು ಬೀದಿಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದಿಲ್ಲ !!.. ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ಅವರಂತೆ ‘ಮೃಷ್ಟಾನ ಬೋಜನ ಸವಿಯಲು’ ನಮ್ಮ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಮಕ್ಕಳು,ಜನರು ಏನು ಪಾಪ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ !?. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರನ್ನು ಬೇರೆ ಭಾಷೆಗೆ ಅವಲಂಬಿಸುವಂತೆ ಮಾಡ ಬೇಡಿ ಪಾಪಿಗಳೇ!?

• ಕೊನೆಯದಾಗಿ ಒಬ್ಬ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಕ ನ ಹಿಂದೆ ಯಾವ ಮಾಫಿಯಾವು ಇಲ್ಲ ಅಥವಾ ಬಹುರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಗಳ ಕೈವಾಡವೂ ಇಲ್ಲ .ಅದರೆ ಡಬ್ಬಿಂಗ್ ವಿರೋಧಿಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ,ಗೂಂಡಾಗಿರಿ,ಮತ್ತು ಹಣದದಾಹವಿದೆ.

folks working for software and bpo companies are asking for dubbing and most of thier companies are dependent upon american outsourcing,if this outsourcing stops? what happens? these folks are zero worried about 6ooo workers which form 80 percent of the KFI..so there is no need for industry listening to them.

The aim, purpose & goal of any film industry is to tell a story. Just stories don’t make languages. Kannada will survive as long as there are people to speak the language. Film industry will vanish as soon as a better story telling mechanism is invented (like film industry killed theatre industry). Only a moron in ivory tower of sandalwood will conclude that they are doing a service to Kannada.
It is upto KFI to tell the story they want. It is upto the audience to accept or reject the film. Based on result of last 25 years, KFI has managed to wean away Kannada folks from Kannada movies.
Well, it is dream of every Indian to amass loads of black money, KFI is any different? Why bring this point, possibly as a distraction from main issue?
Everybody does it for profit. But behind the profit motive is the passion for the work they do. KFI have lost passion to tell a good story.

True. Dubbing will force KFI out of their slumber, comfort zone to make good movies.
Yes, director will stop scene to scene copy (since original is available in Kannada). Now director will have to think & put in his style into remade movies.
Dubbing ban is implemented using mafia tactics. Obviously those tactics aren’t allowed legally anywhere on this earth.
Consumer rights are limited to the goods or service he has purchased. Dubbed content isn’t available and hence consumer cannot claim his right. But anti-dubbing mafia has put fear that everybody is scared to provide content in Kannada. Hence robbing Kannada folks to watch programs in Kannada.
Everybody has right to earn their livelihood (unlike KFI mafia, where they ban artists they don’t like).
Note: The mis-match is because KFI claim & naively believe what they show on screen is Kannada culture. Even a half-wit knows that it isn’t. Hence this culture thing is dragged into arguments.
The arguments put forth by anti-dubbing folks against dubbing is based on the assumption that they will employing local artists. If local artists are employed then what do they want to prevent by their anti-dubbing stance? KFI doesn’t want to understadn their double-speak.
Actors mouth what is put into their mouth by the director. They don’t think otherwise. They are excused ;)

Anti dubbing mafia has created havoc for Tulu, Konkani, Kodava languages. Folks in those region would have liked to watch content in their native language. But due to dubbing ban, those people are forced to watch (mostly remade) content in Kannada. KFI has hand in marginalizing those languages.

Not sure why you have not included Beary, Jenu Kuruba, Badaga, iruLa languages and many of the tribal languages? Oh, they would have had an industry bigger than hollywood and beat them if dubbing was allowed! I guess it is just a reflection of your selective understanding, selective views, selective replies and selective abuses. You have still not replied to each and every point of Erulli Pataki’s blog but merely picking lines to suit your opinion.
Before Death comes Life, so I guess if you do not have the mindset to appreciate life, sustain life, fertilize life, you have no right to ask for Death for anybody, the least is Kannada film industry.
One who does not value life, does not acquire the right to devoid one of it.

I want dubbing in kannada. Stop this monopoly of worst low grade content. Learn how to make films from malayalam industry. Allow dubbing and let the people decide what they want.

@nastika good questions bro. I’m from dwd here people hav learnt telugu by watching telugu moivies. They can talk fluently in that language now. This is the side effect of not allowing dubbing. Anti dubbing guys dont hav enough talent to produce good movies.
