Clearly, the developments in the last six decades have resulted in creating a Dalit affluent class (Devyani Khobragade, K. Shivaramu, the Kharge clan, the Jarakiholi sultanate come to mind for some reason) and a dalit middle class across the nation. If they have the will, they certainly can keep the research flourishing through private contributions. By the way, creating a level playing field perhaps requires that the standard of fairness be equally applied to all sections of society regardless of an individual’s membership in a caste. Consider the irony in our own dear Kannadaland: The Eda dalits feel that the Bala faction has appropriated an inordinate share of the opportunities created to accord a measure of equity to the whole community.
