Prakash Raj to Amitabh Bachchan: “Speak up, Sir, speak up. Don’t let future Indians ask, ‘Why was he silent?’”

The multilingual actor Prakash Raj aka Prakash Rai has urged India’s biggest star Amitabh Bachchan to break his silence on the hatred, bigotry and violence tearing into the vitals of India.

“You are a big guy, Sir. We respect you a lot. Don’t let future generations ask, ‘When society was in danger, why were you silent?’” Prakash Raj said in a Facebook broadcast.

Prakash Raj belatedly found his voice after the killing of his friend, the journalist Gauri Lankesh last September.

He now routinely speaks up on issues under the #JustAsking hashtag.

He now wants his film industry brethren to use their popular appeal to stop India’s slide into the abyss.

Prakash Raj urged Bachchan Sr:

“You are a great voice, Sir. You are rich enough to lose. That’s what richness is.

“Speak up, Sir. I request you to speak up. Don’t give me reasons, don’t give me excuses that I’m old, i don’t want to get into it.

“You are a wonderful man. You have read poetry. You’re a sensitive man. We need your voice.

“They can’t take away a thing from you, because I don’t believe you are supporting them. But by not voicing [your thoughts] you are not helping us.”

Amitabh Bachchan is brand ambassador of the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ program.

On Bachchan’s silence on the brutal kidnapping, rape, mutilation and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu, Prakash said:

“I felt let down when I heard that. It’s your right to speak or not to speak. Sometimes you have to speak.

“Yes, it is disgusting. Talking about it is not disgusting. It could be my daughter. It could be anybody’s daughter.”
