B.T. Venkatesh, the lawyer for the parents of Kafeel Ahmed and Sabeel Ahmed, the Bangalore brothers arrested in Britain in connection with the failed attack on Glasgow Airport, was on NDTV last night.
“My clients have virtually been imprisoned by the media. There are dozens of reporters and photographers outside their home. They cannot go out to even fetch some milk, nor can any visitor come in to meet them.
“They are under a seige by the media.
“The television cameras are fixed on the rooms of their house. When somebody drew the curtain to change her clothes, she was aghast to see a video camera prying in on her. We will initiate legal action against any media house which airs such pictures.”

These families should be put under police protection…these presswallahs are very irresponsible.

This is egregious. These media folks are extremely insensitive . They’ll do anything to sensationalise. They should probably approach the court to rid them of these wicked paparazzi.

… and when they do get a story this way you will watch or read it with glee!!! If you are a journo you will do a follow up story and publish it without any remorse!!!
I think journos are perfectly within their rights to do this as long as they are standing on a road which is public property and not entering their house or trespassing on their property.
as someone who has done the duty of waiting endlessly for several stories in the past, let me tell you it is hardly an eviable job as you don’t even know if you will have anything to show for it at the end of the day.
Funny coincidence that those who whine about journos invading privacy and media crossing limits are often the laziest reporters around … and many of whom come from the dullest publications.
The public has a right to know. The media has a duty to inform. When it come to such a high profile International case the responsibility only goes up.

Yes responsibilty goes up- to maintain the dignity and privacy of people who are not directly involved, to inform the public but not indulge in spreading canards- lets face it – like every other institution in the country- indeed in most of the world- the media both press and television are highly dumbed down and engage in silly antics rather than serious debate.
The Abhi-Ash wedding- need I say more.

Why does media pass judgements based on its own reports?
dont they know that accused is not guilty until proven?
what if common man starts peeping into others bedrooms, just because x or y is accused?
come on one can not lose basic decency to have a story published!

Gaby, you are mixing up two seperate issues … abhi – ash and dumbing down are certainly issues of concern. But that can be at another forum. Lets remember that it’s not for nothing that the media is covering their family is it? There are yet several questions that have to be answered .. did the parents know … if they did, then they did they urge him to give up his radical thinking … In fact I’m sure if the family spoke openly … even if they denied all media reports … the media circus outside their house would end that day.
There are enough evidences of media actually helping justice being done with relentless coverage … Jessica Lal … Priyadarshini Mattoo … only after the media went hammer and tongs did the judiciary and police wake up … here too, the media has to raise their voice as the terror threat to bangalore is very real. Despite the IISC terror attack, mysore terror plot and coverage of these, the police have not even got a half decent intelligence or anti terror cell established yet. The relentless coverage of this has meant that the govt is now at least asking for it!!! Also, please don’t rule out the possibility that what you may call a canard may have actually come from a cop’s mouth.

Media can be bought by any party…
trial by media is not good…then why have courts/ police at all?
remeber that the media monster can be used against any individual…if the price is right, they go on bashing a person…
see how the naxals have hijacked the media, by just throwing few pieces of bread to some key journos…

I tend to agree with Bulldozer. We are still evolving–looks like the families back home in Bangalore will have more cause to be worried…

India and Karnataka lost a brilliant army commander by name Vasanth. It happened almost at the same time when kafeel and co., brought disgrace to Karnataka and her people by trying to bomb an international airport.
As usual, our politicians could’nt escape playing minority appeasement and politics. Our honourable cm, kumaraswamy even announced that Haneef would get a government job when the later had openly expressed his intentions of going back to Australia.
