In a State that is battling the ban on jallikattu, Shriya Saran, the Haridwar-born heroine of Sivaji, has run foul of the Hindu Makkal Katchi for dressing in a “provocative” manner that “offended” Hindu culture at a public function in “conservative” Madras, to mark the silver jubilee of the Rajnikant starrer.
The function was held at the University of Madras on Friday, January 11, where Tamil Nadu chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi, no darling of Hindu elements himself following the Ram sethu controversy, was the chief guest.
According to the website Tamilstar.com, whose reporter was presumably at the scene of the crime, Shriya was “wearing an off-white dress that rode up her knees while she sat, and a plunging neckline that highlighted her hour-glass figure”. Police have told UNI: ”We have given a community service register against the (HMK) petition and will probe the case.”
The actresses had landed in trouble even before the release of the film when censor board objections over her navel display had forced director Shankar to reshoot portions of a song.
***
The questions are obvious: Is this attire really offensive to Hindu culture? Says who, and on what basis? Surely, you have seen far more provocative and offensive pictures? Why are only actresses from the North landing in trouble in Madras—Khushboo being the other major victim?
How do the police register such obviously frivolous complaints? Don’t the courts have anything better to do than entertain such cases? And how come movies and TV shows which are watched by millions more go through without a squeak whereas tiny functions open to a select few come under the scanner?

If any thing, these “Hutch nann makkal kaachi” should be banished from Tamil Nadu and sent straight to Afganisthan! Just to show my broadmindedness, in fact, I would prefer to see all Hindu women in this attire–most appropriate dress in humid Chennai. Then again, I will be shouted down by the lady bloggers here. But Shriyan Saran should be careful lest Muthuvel might think that the damsel is wanting a dalliance with the most Thiru of all Tamils. I hope Muthuvel was very restrained during the function but surely his doctors must be worried….

These nutcase tamils. They get erections seeing a senile old man running around trees with nubile young girls or indulging in some buffonry with a cigarette or a lungi.
However when they see a beautiful woman, they lose it and want the woman to go behind closed doors.
Is it jealousy and the knowledge that they will never have the company of a beautiful woman in their lives?
If they dont want to see Shriya – let them gouge their eyes out and go to the forest and pray to their gods.
Shriya – if you ever read this – you have the support of churumuri readers. Full power to your choice of clothes!

Funny, its been only few centuries since Tamil women wore anything above the waist at all! Even the goddess in most Temples are naked above the waist. As someone said above, it was precisely the humidity of South India which made them wear as little cloth as possible.

What a hot chick! I’ll do her any time and day!
By the way, my wisdom acquired via severe tapas – often disturbed by bevies of beauties if I may add – reveals that those who protest and file petitions against this type of non-event, do so because of Envy and Jealousy. Envy because the women who are petitioning are themselves ugly or plain and shapeless and can’t stand it if embodiments of hotness show-off( which is perefectly normal). They need an outlet and that is why they protest.
What about the men then? The men protest because they are jealous that some other guy is banging this hot piece of glute while they have to contend with ugly or plain shapeless women.

Shreya was gorgeous but the dmk thirus and thambis have been guilty of monstrous hate crimes against women on many other occasions. It has its roots in the psychology of the tamils, particularly because of the complexion of the color of the skin of the tamils and the ‘classical’ tradition.
Actresses like khusboo, navya nair were humiliated by tamil chauvinists and nationalists. Why did not the Hindu, the leftist-secular brigade speak out then?Basic decency came a cropper against tamil chauvinism.Malavika(a kannadiga),nila(some chopra renamed) have been molested by tamil stars.Priya Mani was battered ,ostensibly to shoot a scene ‘naturally’.Khusboo in particular was hounded and terrorised. She had to beg for her right to stay in madras. The marans orchestrayed the hounding with the full connivance of karu.(they had not fallen apart then). The idea was to make sure that outsiders knew their place in chennai. What did n.ram do then?

DB, we are men, you and I. Why not appreciate beauty on display rather than belittling it? These foolish people who protest should all be taken to a corrective facility ASAP. Look at the eye candy above. She is dressed that way because she WANTS the attention. Cat calls, wolf whistles, Rat roars…all animal sounds are welcome to her even if she pretends to despise them. Of course, to a woman, such sounds are not acceptable from construction workers, bank clerks and other assorted employees but are most welcome from Arjun RamPhal types( looks) or Ram Vilas Paswans( power) and anyone in between. Which is where I fit in.

Perhaps you wish to correct this anomaly by joining the Madras Police Force. Please note this is just in jest, no offence intended.

Hmm…… all you guys PROVING those Huch Nan Makkal Kachi’s point. Whats wrong with you guys? See a woman and go drooling all over. None of you would have said all this if she had worn a sari. Ironically Shriya is so HOT you could drool even she wore a hadinentu mola sari. Again proving Huch Nan Makkalu right! Sir Ashes Soul Broken Into Pieces all that talk about power and looks is a waste. No girl worth her two straps even remotely thinks of all that when she comes to attend a silver jubilee of her film. You guys can eat off her left toe for all she cares. Anyone pay few lakhs to run around a shivaji even those ugly or plain and shapeless will shed all that without hadinentu mola blinking an eyelid. Finally it all comes down to who-gets-paid-what-to-wear/not-wear that determines all.

I wish the attire really could justify the foolishness it has caused. What we see is harmless.
Hindu sensitiveness doesn’t seem to matter to the Cyclops in TN when it comes to Ram Sethu, but when actresses have an opinion or dress in a comfortable manner the puritan devil in them comes out salivating.
What are we going to lose if this part of India secedes as long as its coast is under the control of India? The Nilagiri district, of course, has to revert to Karnataka. We can also deport thugs like M. A. M. Ramaswamy to TN.
How will the Tams survive if they cannot migrate to other parts of the country, especially to a state called Karnataka?

Madame Mriga, you have proved my point about certain women being frustrated and protesting out of envy. Why they do so has been explained in some detail in my previous comment.
By the way, Shriya is inherently a hot girl, but the dress makes her utterly bangable. Men are stimulated by that, take it or leave it. The rest of your tirade against mankind is a grammatical churumuri that sounds like an eye within an eye being punched by a fist within a fist. But let me in my infinite mercy tell you how the world works: It doesn’t matter if the guy looks like a toad as long as he has what most attractive women want – money / power/fame. No language of the poets for him, no Kalidasa-sooradasa stuff. Instead, the seductive jingle of coins and the crisp treble of currency notes are his chick magnets.

Poor lady has apologised: http://in.rediff.com/movies/2008/jan/16shriya.htm
In a swift damage control exercise, Shriya had conveyed her regrets to Tamilians and Hindus across the State for offending their sentiments.
Accepting her ‘mistake’, she said she never intended to hurt the feelings of Hindus or Tamilians. She had deep respect for the long standing tradition and culture of Tamil Nadu.
”I was unaware of the repercussions that would arise because of the attire I wore during the function,” she added.
”I came to know about the silver jubilee function while shooting for a Hindi film in Thanjavur. I came to the function directly from the shooting spot,” she said, conveying her apology to all Tamilians through the media.
She would be sending a letter of apology to Mr Karunanidhi and members of the Hindu community who were offended by her attire.

Have they checked their own daughters where do they go and who they sleep with. I bet none 0of them will be a virgins they all re sleeping out of wedlock.

LOL at Doddi Buddi! Hutch Nann Makkal Kaktchi? That was just hilarious! :D They are hutch-nann makkalu indeed!
I think this whole problem stems from the fact that we enjoy schadenfreude! We love to take our stars to the highest summits of success only because we want to watch them fall as we push them down when they least expect it. Shriya’s move attires and dances are voluptuous to say the least! The HMK has no issue in that kids of every age are exposed to such content. In fact those raunchy dances do more damage to our culture than anything else! But they choose to disapprove and even lodge a police complaint when Shriya wears something perhaps a little skimpy for a small public function that celebrates the success of her movie! I think it’s because, in our inner-most minds and hearts, we are quite jealous of the success of our stars… and knowing that we can never reach such lofty heights in our personal lives, we actively seek, capitalize and relish every opportunity to bring them down! I think you can see this trend in public reaction in the recent past. Sania Mirza and Aamir Khan, for example, have been bolted from the blue with legal petitions accusing them of insulting the national flag. How ridiculous can this get? They are probably more patriotic than you and I! :) We can also look at other examples in Bollywood where we’ve subjected stars with treatment that lacks any rationale but instead points clearly towards our unhealthy delight in schadenfreude, especially when it comes to our stars!

An explanation to Quark
Also important for Mriganayani and Sir Vibhudi Aatmapudi:
Quark has a point there — there are no protests about male “immodesty”.
Vibhudi Aatmapudi clearly denies that there’s anything such as male immodesty whatsoever. I don’t. However, our society is full of people like Vibhudi Aatmapudi. Or I would say full of men like him.
Quark — men don’t get “offended” by female immodesty, I guess women are likelier to be offended by that. But when men in politics pretend to be offended by it, they are likelier to get female votes.
Women don’t get offended by male immodesty, so they don’t complain. Men might get offended, but due to homophobia, they don’t complain. Homophobia causes complete repression of any reaction to immodesty by people of the same sex. (Repression ~ denial)
(That also explains why female politicians aren’t seen complaining against female immodesty directly. You may think homophobia applies less to women, but then, being female themselves, they already have a store of female votes, so need not employ these tactics.)
Reading the Kissing–Pissing post, noting that pissing (in public view) is primarily a male activity, would give more insight.

The only reason why I wouldn’t mind beating this woman to a pulp myself (I am woman too) is not because I’m “shapeless” as some stupid excuses of people seem to think but because her attire attracts the attention of baboons like the one who wrote disgusting, sleazy insults like these: “Look at the eye candy above.
She is dressed that way because she WANTS the attention.
Cat calls, wolf whistles, Rat roars…all animal sounds are welcome to her even if she pretends to despise them. (I wouldn’t pretend to despise them I do despise them and wouldn’t mind stabbing the whistler NO matter what he looks like or how rich he is. I’d feel my dignity offended)
banging this hot piece of glute (oh, so she is just a piece of backside, a faceless entity to be “banged”)
What this woman doesn’t realise is that her actions don’t just affect how men and people in general see her but also how they see all women. Her actions are selfish and she doesn’t realise she’s giving all women a bad name.
There is nothing wrong with appreciating beauty, but WHY can’t people like the quoter just keep it to themselves?
