Prof. V.K. Natraj, former director of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Mysore, writes an original and outstanding letter to the editor of The Hindu, a proactive epistle that underlines the role that public intellectuals ought to play:
***
“I am writing to share my anguish and disappointment over an event that has largely gone unnoticed in the media except for a few letters to the editor in the Kannada print medium. I refer to the absence of sympathy and a sense of shared loss from friends in Tamil Nadu for all those who have been devastated by the ravages of the floods in northern Karnataka.
“Expressing sympathy, indeed sorrow at the suffering visited on thousands, most of them thoroughly ill-equipped to withstand this onslaught, is what sensitivity is all about. When in 2005 Tamil Nadu suffered unimaginable horrors from the tsunami, the citizens of the city of Mysore under the leadership of the pontiff of the Suttur Math came forward to raise funds to rehabilitate the victims and built dwellings for them in Mudaliarkuppam.
“Prior to this, interim measures of relief were provided to school children and fisherfolk whose livelihood was threatened. I understand that a whole colony rehabilitated with assistance from Mysore is now called Mysore colony. When in neighbouring Karnataka people suffered something similar one would expect Tamilians to rise to the occasion. Sadly no such thing has happened.
“Let me add that I write as one who has enjoyed the hospitality of Tamil Nadu in Chennai for over half a decade and know that deep down there is nothing but goodwill between the peoples of the two States. Even now I hope my Tamilian friends will do what we know they expect of themselves. It would be a sad travesty of the enormous universality represented by Tiruvalluvar and Sarvajna whose statues were unveiled not long ago in Bangalore and Chennai respectively.
“May I express the hope too that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, one of the last in the lineage of senior political leaders in this country, will seek from Tamilians what they owe to themselves. I also add an appeal to the socially and morally conscious class in Tamil Nadu to further a cause which they must hold dear to their hearts.”

“enormous universality represented by Tiruvalluvar”
Casteist Tiruvalluvar have given them Aram Porul and Inbum, We have given them Porul with Infosys where they do dilly dally politics and nepotism; now let them enjoy a bit with Namitha’s Inbum .
Let Marathi enjoy the Mahamelava.
We can always have those closed doors malnourished rajyotsava.
while we have built Sarva janaangada shanthiya thota,
let us also take care that it is rasikara kangala seleyuva nota.
Shame on us that we don’t produce any compared to Tamil Telugu Hindi porn which surround us.

Karnataka does not release Kaveri water causing distress in TN.
And this is the only weapon Karnataka has.The Tamils have invaded Bengaluru. The Tamils blackmail the centre.Tamils have colonised Ooty,Hogenakal(Ogenakkal),Hosur(Osur),Dhenkanikota(Thenkani kottai),Talavadi.
Kannadigas are harassed by senior thirus at the centre.Let the thirus demonstrate they have some Indian feelings,no let them show they have fellow dravidian feeling, then we can talk about sympathy, flood relief etc.

There are many such acts of gestures from the karnataka people which were done voluntarily without pushing and prodding – both during tsunam and during the recent Bihar floods. This and the ease with which people can get into and get on their lives in Karnataka is proof enough of the “liberal” and “cosmopolitan” and “open-minded” nature of kannadigas.
Unfortunately, all the media does is rabble rousing on a few incidents when, rightly (and sometimes wrongly), kannadigas assert certain basic rights that is deprived to them for various reasons (sometimes conspiracy of others – like in the case of classical language status, and sometimes due to lack of sufficient focus from their own leaders).
In my view, Karnataka is probably the most “liberal” state in India.

Ah, let us take a quick look at our North Karnataka brethern when Karnataka and Tamil almost went to war over the Kaveri when Krishna was CM.
Given the constant treatment Utthara Kannadigas as a permanent underclass, their indifference to what was happening in South Karnataka was understandable. Our politicians hardly noticed their protest through indifference.
Isn’t it clear to us that the only means that Tamil Nadu will use to relate to us is through threats and through getting New Delhi to withhold whatever measly benefits should be coming our way?
What can Tamil Nadu or Tamils in Karnataka ever give us besides colonising our land by working jobs that we won’t take?
The most important question in this context is perhaps how long will we take the Union government’s contempt for us, when Bengaluru is so vital to the country’s defence interests. This was the case even when the party in power was the same as the one in New Delhi.
Our MPs say nothing in Parliament. Four ministers from Karnataka in the union government is nothing short of a miracle, but they won’t do a damn thing to assert themselves. New Delhi is a good place for all of our politicians to conduct business and do a lot of give and take in terms of millions of rupees.
Why isn’t Devegowda shedding his usual crocodile tears?

it is going to be ‘Aranya Rodhana’!
Or to quote the same Sarvajna who has been referred in this letter,
‘Gorkalla mele Aankalla male suridante sarvajna’!!
Expecting Tamilians to be sensitive to others that too kannadigas problems is highly impossible! if this tragedy had happened in Srilanka then they would have made a full hearted contribution!

I do not understand, Why we are pin pointing Tamil Nadu. I live in Delhi, I have been appalled by the apathy and ignorance of the people here, on the Karnatakandhra floods. I think people have become immune in a way and have lost sensitivity, All thanks to 24/7 media and its reporting !
Just one question including, How many of us felt for Kosi Flood Victims,

I agree with Bangalore Boy , no point in expecting help from them…the worst possible thing is that , there will be a migration of tamilians into these towns, looking for work , forming slums and in 5 yrs flat have some thiru statues and have a local councillor from DMK / Tamil org
I think its a blessing that they arent offering to help…

“by working jobs that we won’t take?”
I think you are unaware of the large Kannadiga population of Gulbarga and Bidar who don’t even get such jobs. Just because AnanthaMurthy says this in some context we need not repeat it everytime. It’s just that our capital itself is mortgaged for a few Mysoor Iyengars, else none of the states have their capital near to other states’ districts than it’s own and that too at one of incovenient ends!!!!
I am sure if all these useless politicians are sent to Hubli or Davangere and get beaten , they can do less poltics and more effective work than swaying comfortably in resorts.
“Four ministers from Karnataka in the union government is nothing short of a miracle”
I think you are missing the utility here. None of them can bring a single pie to state except filling their pockets with those portfolios. Surely a miracle. I am sure they would be thriving for speaking good English and Hindi to spread their image at fag end of their career.
@Lingaraj
Lateral thinking of Dehali Kannadiga. Kosi floods and Bihar!! They got centre’s help immediately before any help was sought of some multiple of 1000 crores. It won’t reach is a different matter. Delhi is there for all of the North. TN is a different planet which sucks India with ministers like Chidu, Maran, Jayalalitha, Karuna, Raja Baja Khoja and all, even judges join now,- who even though apparently fight are deeply united and Karnataka a Dweepa cut in middle – who apparently never fight but always parted; on top of that they are shy to ask centre.

I agree with Lingaraj. Did Maharashtra respond? Did Kerala and Goa respond? I doubt it. Why are we picking on Tamil Nadu? Forget reaching out for help. I bet most people north of Maharashtra even know the difference between different states in southern India. For them everything is Madrasi.

Kosi flood victims? you mean bimaris? sorry, you’re comparing rotten apples and oranges. for one, they are annakke danda, bhoomige bhaara lumpen louts anyway… karnataka and kannadigas are bread-winning, law-abiding citizens of an ungrateful, even malicious wretch of a country.
secondly, the bimarus own half the parliament anyway and help themselves to the treasury whenever they please — not a luxury afforded to karnataka.
thirdly, kannadigas in particular and the entire country in general, is putting up with more than their share of these louts in nearly every public sector undertaking, not least the Railways. idakkinta hechchu nam kayyalli madakke aagalla. kshamisi.

I am not sure he is picking Tamils when there are twenty-six other states and seven union territories. This shows some bias. I agree everyone should act with humanity. But this kind of mooting the fire will result only in even more anguish and indifference which a senior person should not try to do.
The discussion could have better been “We expected something from our close friends TN etc.”
If you read the comments, the topic had been deviated to encroachment by Tamils in Karnataka. Still Tamils are a very small population of working and earning community when compared to Reddy’s who are in land mafia all over Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai. And Gowda’s who reign superior in Karnataka.

I have some idea of the plight of our border districts, our brothers and sisters living there in the most inhospitable conditions imaginable. Some do come south for manual labor, but more migrate to the north so they can be closer to home, leaving Bengaluru free for Tamil speaking laborers.
