ARUN PADAKI writes from Bangalore: The pleasure of shopping on Gandhi Bazaar Main Road in Basavanagudi may be lost forever, as an underpass at Tagore Circle will be in place by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
The ill-conceived and irrelevant underpass would not only consume the lush Tagore Park, but would render this pride of South Bangalore tree less.
An underpass at Tagore Park is nothing but a disaster on the residents of Basavanagudi.
This would end an era, in which Gandhi Bazaar has become a way of life. The historic Tagore Park would be gone forever and the tree lined Gandhi Bazaar Main Road would end up as a main arterial road connecting other localities, and in the process pushing the shoppers and vendors away.
Can one imagine the loss of shopping here on the eve of Gowri Habba, Ugadi or Deepavali?
BBMP has built a flyover at the National College Circle, just few hundred meters away from the proposed underpass that remains underutilized for more than two years.
Bangalore’s ethnicity and tradition is best seen at Basavanagudi. Instead of turning this into a concrete mess, Gandhi Bazaar should be converted into a cultural hotspot, a shopper’s delight and a walker’s loved place.
Let every day be Deepavali, let every day be Gowri Habba, let every day be Ugadi.
Tagore Park with its elevated podium could be a place where cultural programmes could be performed, while the audiences could have multiple options to sit, squat or stand with their friends and family.
While the people here are rather quiet about this apart from talking to the press, not much action is seen to thwart this irrelevant project.
The elected representatives who opposed this not too long ago are not to be heard this time, indicating that they have either supported this underpass quietly or their efforts to stall this project has been disregarded by their own ruling party and their Member of Parliament, Ananth Kumar.
Be it the Congress or the BJP, there seems to be no difference. It is clear that their fad for flyovers is ruining Bangalore in general, and Basavanagudi and V.V. Puram in particular. People are now aware that their views hold no water and hopefully are wise enough to choose a better representative in the ensuing BBMP polls.
“Bangalore’s ethnicity and tradition is best seen at Basavanagudi. ” is it not ironic that folks who have so consistently spoken against tradition and ethnicity and culture as hindus see it are now lamenting it’s loss when a party wrongly accused of upholding hindu tradition and ethnicity is seen destroying it?
how terribly confused you are.
all the modernity worshipping fellows should celebrate this destruction and reconstruction in the name of humanity without honor.
dont cry but party tonight

Malleswaram in the north and Basavangudi in the South were once beautiful and affordable localities for middle classes. Since the past 2 decades, these places are invaded by moneybags who are also environmentally illiterate. They have gone about building match box style apartments and commercial complexes, by demolishing the bungalows and felling the trees.
Those who could resist the financial pressures still continued living there enjoying the greenery of parks and other charming thingsleft from yesteryears. Now it is the turn of the Government to remove whatever little greenery, such as parks and trees, in order make life charmless for the remaining single residences, so that they make way for the ugly commercial complexes.

They built the National College Flyover to supposedly clear the logjam at the circle there..the flyover is free of traffic because no one uses it..the logjam still continues below…I wish they put up pictures on the flyover of the idiots who thought about it…
Tagore Circle RIP…Its basic disregard to people’s wishes…

The bridges, flyovers and so-called city improvements are made for the benefit of the nexus of ministers/bureaucrats/contractors that is hardly ever interested in the convenience of the people living in the area or retaining the beauty of the place.

see how many trees have gone in the last three years 50000
People and administrators must be crazy to allow this in the name of development.
I am sure contractors, Babus, politicians are minting money in building METRO.

This under pass @ Tagore Circle is the last nail on Basavanagudi as wel as Gandhi Bazzar after the blunder created @ National College Circle. It is the handy work of IAS lobby in league with contracters & yellow politicians – BJP or Congress or Vattal the champion of Kannada/Karnataka/old Mysore and the New Karnataka which celebrates 54th year of it’s formation to-day (1st Nov 2009)
After Dr.Subramnya’s contribution (Magic box fame) to history of Bangalore it is now Mr. Meena’s gift to Basavanagudi/Gandhi Bazzar and Bangalore. Sri Krishnarajendra Wodeyar Road is gang raped by Metro at one end and BBMP at the other. Let the tribe of Meenas & Subrmanyas multiply and live happy long prosperous life contributing their might to the creation of modern BENGALURU.

Why link trees with culture and tradition of Bangalore? Trees are being cut, that’s bad. But why extend it romantically and associate it with Basavanagidi, Bangalore? Trees are not exclusive to Basavanagudi, they are found elsewhere too. Trees don’t give a f*** to tradition and culture, they are least bothered, probably because they are perhaps more evolved than us.
Anyway Arun Padaki, do not expect people to fight for trees. It does not confine to their framework of morality. Morality comes from their conceived notion of ‘culture and tradition’. Your bad luck if you are not mentioned in my scriptures.
Btw, is there a board in English in Basavanagudi? or someone not liking Rajkumar’s movie? You can gather a million people beating chest opposing it. Trees going away, people living in abject poverty, who cares?

In the name of development, they ruin all the old vintage ambience, almost everywhere — in India!

I think people who are protesting this underpass are devoid of any original thinking. As a person who travels in Bangalore extensively on a daily basis, my personal opinion is to create infrastructure when we dont need it and be ready for the future.
South Bangalore is attracting people in hordes. In areas like J P Nagara, BTM Layout, Jayanagara, Banashankari we are witnessing the steady growth of apartment culture. Assuming that there is atleast one car per family the growth in the vehicle population will explode even more in the coming years. Should we not be ready by then?
There are people who argue that the vehicular movement is not sufficient to justify the building of an underpass. Well, when the Intermediate Ring Road, connecting Indiranagara and Koramangala was built a few years ago, there was hardly any traffic on the road. We used to go for a jolly ride on that road late in the evenings. But look at the situation today? Evenings, the traffic density is so high that vehicles have to stand in the signal for a minimum of 20-30 minutes. Now this could have been avoided if an underpass was built at the Sony World signal junction. Today, any such construction would cause huge hardship to the people who use that road. A little bit of foresight could have prevented this situation.
I can quote many such examples. The Outer Ring Road, the Krishnarajapura underbridge, Marathalli Bridge, the BTM Signal at Udupi Garden. A number of crosses on the Hosur Road. This can go on and on.
What the people should do, instead of protesting against the project, is to bring enormous pressure on the powers that be to complete the project on time. If these projects are completed according to their original timeline, then everyone will be benefited.

Loyal congressmen have always hated this place. It was in Tagore Circle where a Prime Minister — Indira Gandhi and Buta Singh(a minister?) got pelted by common people, they supposedly fled the place with bleeding faces and shattered windows of the car.
Wonder why even Ram Guha, the man of academic integrity, does not mention this incident in his magnum opus?
