The resumption of “Operation Kamala”—the BJP’s advertised attempt to cobble up a majority by prompting legislators from the Congress and JDS to resign their seats—has seen a furious backlash from the Congress, which staged a dharna in front of the chief minister’s residence last night.
On paper, the BJP’s tactics may seem par for the muddied course. After all, it can claim that it is not wooing opposition MLAs to defect to its ranks; it only encourages them to leave the party on whose ticket he was elected and then stand for election on its symbol. In reality, though, Operation Kamala is fraught.
At one level, it openly dangles the fruits of office before susceptible legislators, as if they should be the only motivation of being elected legislators. In effect, a bribe. And, at another level, it makes nonsense of ideology, provided such a thing exists in the lexicon of any legislator today.
For the BJP, which has essentially been paying the price for the Operation Kamala as every round of dissidence has shown, the fact that it has had to embark on another round of the same exercise demonstrates how fragile its existence is, and how compelling the need to be survive at all costs.
On the other hand, the fact that legislators are willing to resign their seats, dump their voters and risk everything once again, shows how tempting the power of office is.
Question: Is “Operation Kamala” a legitimate political strategy?
>Is “Operation Kamala” a legitimate political strategy?
All political strategies are legitimate…..

People of Karnataka voted BJP into power. If other political parties cannot digest this fact and try to destabilise the government by doing all kinds of nefarious activities, do you expect BJP to sit quiet and see tamasha?

If 16 members are disqualified, then expect elections to these 16 constituencies. Add to it, some more MLAs are in the process of resigning. So you can expect by elections to around 20 plus constituencies in the next one month.
If Congress and JDS fight the election together, in alliance, then I can safely say that BJP will be defeated in 18 out of the 20 constituencies. Simply because JDS and Cong put together have always polled 55% of the votes, while BJP can at best, get only 40% votes.
Which would mean BJP is back to being a minority govt.
Again, FOURTH round of operation Kamala will begin.

Yes. Why not? Grabbing power and latching onto it at any cost is the ultimate aim of any political party. Principles and such are lot of humbug. Don’t prick BJP constantly by reminding it was a party of difference and once had ethics. That was the past and long forgotten. After all it didn’t bring it any juicy fruits of power as a reward for being a good boy in the class.
Now it has mastered the art of survival at any cost. Yes, it is plundering like no tomorrow and has zilch to show for governance. But who are we to complain and whine on an internet blog? If the voters get tired of its shenanigans they may decide to show it the middle finger when elections come calling. Then again it may not happen as the threshold for corruption and non-competence has gone up in general and I suspect people just don’t care any longer.

who said people voted BJP into power. The people’s verdict was BJP 110,JDS 28 and Congress 77 and 6 independents. You have to accept that BJP was not voted with majority. BJP did not accept people’s verdict and went ahead with operation kamala.
Note – I believe as per constitution any party with more than 50% has absolute mandate and any less than 50% still do not get mandate. If you start asking other questions, you have to be reminded that Congress had got more vote share than BJP in 2008 and should have been the first contender for making government.

PVN started Operation Hastha to ensure the survival of his government. Right from Day 1, the opposition has tried to bring down the BJP government in Karnataka. So BJP has resorted to Operation Kamala. Some MLAs have participated with true democratic spirit in this operation:)
JDS tried Operation Black Magic with mixed results.

Subbajji,
Pray tell me this. Why is there this tradition that the Governor invites a party with largest number of MLAs/MPs to form the government in case no one gets majority?? Has it not happened umpteej number of times in the past?
And what majority are we talking about here? In a vidhana sabhe of 224 members, half way mark is 112. BJP got 110. I can understand your argument if either Cong or JD S had also got 110 seats. But look at their number of seats? 77 in case of Congress which is atleast reasonable. What moral right do JDS has to topple the government when all that they have got is just frigging 28 seats??
And please spare us the gyan of single largest party with maximum vote share etc… point is did they win the seats? If yes, please invite them to form the govt. If not, ask them to shut their bases and sit in opposition for 5 years.

Make it 40 plus Sir, within next one month is doubtful, unless Quraishi saab is ready to do a chawla

Wonderful I say! I bet it will actually happen given the rate at which these ‘operation’s are taking place. Rajanna wouldn’t have thought of these operations being more entertaining when he did Operation Diamond Racket. Whatay movie anna!
Subbajji,
Ajji..actually speaking none of these clowns won the decisive vote share or mandate. But the learned people say it is some dance of democracy or something like that. Whatever. Do you really think we need a/any govt. especially of the current type? What for? Life may actually be better if there is holiday for Govt (like tax holiday) for 5 years.

It is going from bad to worse, lets see what else is in store. What might happen is left for everyone to wonder, whether it will go up or hit nadir. Nadir is yet to be defined, as with every passing day, we think we have hit the nadir, then next day we realise, it goes even deeper.

What is worse than nefarious practices of Indian political parties is the justifications that their supporters give.
Congress did X so it is fine for BJP to do Y etc. etc.
Guess this is the Indian way. General public who dont have a piece of the power pie, have to adjust and live increasingly miserable lives.

BJP state unit(yeddi and drama company) is a big shame to BJP.
Its time people vote based on candidates and not political parties.all parties no matter what their supporters say are downright corrupt.Vote for better candidates.
I had voted suresh gowda(tumkur rural mla) last time.I guess ningappa would have been better candidate.Am repenting myself for voting for suresh.

Congress & JD(S) must blame themselves for this unwanted element in our politics. They invited this by taking @ 16 BJP/Independent legislators & keeping them under house arrest. Both the parties are unfazed & unashamed. These parties are worse than BJP!
Karnataka people must also understand to vote for capable people and not that he is a Dalit, Muslim, Bania. Role of both congress & JD(S) are questionable.

Subash,
I know both Ningappa and Suresh from close quarters. If you ask me Suresh is lot better than Ningappa. I shudder to think that if this is what Suresh is, What might Ningappa would have been. He would have been sold by now. Kummi would have been crying about another lost diamond :)
I am more worried about the choices we have.
I know Srinivas as well. I am surprised that he has still not sold himself and decided to score some brownie points with Kummi.
Also, Bharathi, who is acting as the role model for all the MLA wives in Karnataka, is also the unofficial MLA of Gubbi. She is known to do the hafta vasooli from all the mining / govt officers / business mafia in Gubbi.

I was in the Blr Airport yesterday night and was shocked to see a VVIP Swamiji actively doing all deal-making for some party. While exchange of 50 to 100 crores for a single vote/MLA or for being absent has become common nowadays (sadly the Lok Ayukta appears to be in deep slumber), seeing these Swamiji’s in action, getting hands-on with the most crooked MLA’s was pretty shocking.
First to take the Swami’s ‘blessings’ was none other than Rebel Asnotikar. (always same color shirt and pants). After 30 mins, there was a constant procession of a few MLA’s of all parties in and out. Some appeared to be grumbling and howling on their mobile phones while some appeared very happy and content! There were two senior cops on duty, both with extremely busy walkie-talkies, one was from traffic . Both the cops and a dozen, ensured obstruction-journalist-free traffic, in and out!
The meetings were conducted in stealth and discretely in the VIP lounge next to the lift in the departure area, below the escalators. With an army of assistants, the Swami appeared to have gone abroad later in the night. Incidentally, three of his key side-kicks were always busy with a bunch of huge maps of land/layout, probably for obvious discussions.
Talking about politicians-cops-black money in Bangalore today, I had the company of three talkative and semi-drunk cops in civilian clothes sitting in the same row as mine. They were happily going on another routine, short shopping vacation abroad. Before getting onboard the plane, they had a bill of Rs 8000 in the Kingfisher Sports bar, conveniently paid in fresh Rs 1000 notes!

Politics in Karnataka has gone to the dogs and you BJP supporters have no shame in supporting these lancha MLA’s. Both JD(S) and Congress are/were bad. Bangarappa made money, Deve Gowda stole land, JH Patel drank scotch, SM Krishna had set rate for service, Dharam Singh had Laddoo seve, Kumaraswamy bought Hummer for his son, Yeddy made his girlfreind into minister and now the BJP criminals basically made Karnataka into Banana state of India.
Thank you BJP, never again will we ever see you in power in Karnataka. All you Hindu fundamentalists can vote for them and enjoy.
Remember Laloo and the way he looted Bihar – Karnataka people will never forget BJP, reddy brothers and Yeddy drama for ever.
